Assembly 2009 is over.

category: general [glöplog]
Real confusion was: Why did everyone vote our prod in 64k :) It really didn't deserve the place from my point of view. I mainly coded it for the giggles :)

Though seriously, compo rules only state that the prod must be under 64k executable and that compo machine has flash player 10 installed. There is no rule about which parts of the compo machine can be used for demo and which cannot.

So what we did:
1. Take 64kb swf and minimal html wrapper to enable fullscreen mode
2. Remove the original Gzip compression -> 168k swf
3. Put that into exe dropper -> 48k exe
4. ShellExecute("%APPTEMP%\index.html");
5. ???
6. Profit

i think it's also odd that flash demo goes on real wild but flash 64kb on the combined 64k...

I agree that although the limitations are bit artificial, without real wild, there would not be enough space for mobile, handheld or flash demos in normal demo compo @Assembly. On other hand, submitting Flash 64k to Real Wild demo would be about as senseless than submitting 64k intro to demo compo.

No matter you do Flash 64k will distort the expected results in any compo you submit it, in real wild it's overrun by full size prods, in 64k it has this Vic20/NES/JS/Esoteric Platform gimmick advantage. Stop voting gimmicks for gimmicks sake god damn :P

In other parties, the category for Flash prods should be considered by size only, it is no different from java entries which are also slow but usually accepted in 64k and demo compos.

I've never be so much outside the party hall like this year. Roughly 3000 km southwest.

Does that mean that python and ruby entries are now also acceptable in 64k compo ? :)

Maybe you can even use openCV or download stuff from the web!

unrelated: is it ok to use stuff like vanGogh graphics in demos? it prolly is public domain or something but if feels wrong

ask vivaldi
it's not ok to use van gogh if you do it so that it looks like crap. :)

I agree with Xernobl. The Flt/CNCD/Orange "demo" should be in the "Music" category, because it had music. The winning DS demo should be in oldschool, because it had colors. The Textmode demo should be in Executable graphics, because it was executable; and the film about disk throwing should be in the basketball compo.
ζχ`, basketballbat compo you mean.

I feel spent, happy and almost ready to start organizing the next one .. eh, perhaps I need a bit more sleep first though.

I'm very happy with how everything went this year. Sure, we had a few hiccups on Thursday (e.g. issues with the TV stream), but overall very smooth sailing in terms of organizing.

Really outstanding stuff in the competitions. The TOP5 in Demo, 64k, 4k and Real Wild were all great entries. My hat off to your sirs for making my party! The audience agrees: monitors shut down, people watching, clapping and cheering.

As for the Real wild vs. demo/64k discussion above, Flash along with Java and other similar runtimes are installed by default on the compo machines and any entry is free to use those just like they can use Direct3D or other off-the-box Windows stuff (e.g. speech synths used back in the day in AND's 64ks).

We have taken the stance that the compo author can decide which of these compos he enters (hence Flash being used in both 64k and Real Wild). So the more adventurous/bold like Statik have chosen to go head to head (Flash vs. native apps) where as Evoflash's other entry was in Real Wild. I'm fine with both those decisions, but I can understand that it looks confusing.

My problem with "Proof of Concept" getting 2nd place in the 64k intro compo isn't that was Flash: it's simply that it wasn't any good.

gloom: you can't blame the organizers for the voting. i bet that the majority of the audience knows what flash is and find it easier to relate to the size constrains of that ...
macaw: Oh, I don't blame the organizers at all.

this whole complaining about results is about as old as demoparties are I guess.. big ups for the stream, was solid entertainment for those at home :)

And so what was wrong with the 'extreme graphics'?

Yeah, the stream was great. Really high quality and very reliable!

I'll summarize the problem with 'extreme graphics' -

WE DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HECK THAT IS.

Is it hand drawn stuff on old machines? Is it hand drawn stuff on new machines with old software? Is it rendered 4k stuff?

If it's any of those, what the heck is it being judged in the same compo with the others?

4k executable graphics are a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT skill set than hand drawn, old platform graphics. It's like comparing sheep with cellphones. You just have to go "WHAT? Wait I'm sup... do I vote for fluffiness, or ability to maintain a call in a tunnel?"

The entries themselves were GOOD entries. But look at the #1 entry, the #2 entry, and the #3 entry. Explain to me how to compare and contrast these in a REASONABLE manner.

Personally, I'd rather assembly became a gaming only event. The demoscene part of assembly seems to be poorly run and organised by people who have an extremely vague knowledge of the scene.

For this reason (and this reason alone), I will never attend assembly.
