it appears to me that the organizing team at asm is very capeable. i've never been to assembly (and i most likely never will).
Organizing was once again great. If you don't like to hang out with gamers, do like the rest of the sceners and join Boozembly for non compotime. Works like a charm.

Not all sceners hang out at Boozembly.

That's true, I stand corrected. Also "oldschool area" is good place to spot sceners.

The demoscene part of assembly seems to be poorly run and organised by people who have an extremely vague knowledge of the scene

The demoscene part of Assembly is organized by the compocrew, which includes active sceners such as me, pahamoka^trilobit, paaris^trilobit, sivu^(B) etc. etc. etc.

If you still maintain that we have an extremely vague knowledge of the scene, I'd be happy to discuss this if you had _actual_ points I could answer to.

That said, I myself also consider Extreme Graphics compo to be extremely weird, and the death of the true oldskool gfx compo is a very sad thing indeed. But this wasn't anything I was able to decide on. I've voiced my criticisms in the past about this subject as well.

visy; Sorry if it came across in the unintended way. Organising something as big as assembly is an absolutely monstrous task and for that, you and the other orgs have my utmost respect.

I wasn't speaking about the whole event in general, but merely the 'extreme' compos. As said by people previously, it's not so much confusing, but more 'strange' than anything else to see such entries grouped together. There's no set properties to judge on and to be able to compare one entry to the next.

I've never really had that much interest in assembly so I was never aware that there was as many sceners involved with the organising of the compos. I had the impression that it was more or less organised by the same people as the gaming stuff, possibly with a little helping hand from a few sceners. Although as you've said, when it comes to organising this, some things are beyond your reasonable control and you have no say in the matter, which makes this whole thing an entirely different issue.

As said, I've never been to assembly, but the impression from being someone who's watched assemblyTV but never attended, is that it's just one huge lan party with a small side serving of the demoscene just to try and make gamers take an interest in the scene. As I've never been, I wasn't 'judging' what assembly is like. I can't, I've never experienced it. That would be like me saying I dislike you, even though I've never talked to you, which is something I don't like people doing. I was more or less saying how it was portrayed to a scener who's yet to attend assembly.

I have absolutely no doubt that it's organised well, that you and the other orgas have a vast knowledge of the scene and put your heart into organising it all, but to someone that's never been to assembly, it looks quite 'different' to any other party. I've not kept up with previous years, so I'm not sure if this is regarding just this year, or also previous years.

Hopefully that's a better description of what I was trying to say. If any of what I've just said is a little 'off', please read it again. I mean everything in the kindest of words. :) Thanks.

Didn't have the time to participate this year, boo.

Checking the results and the extreme music compo seems hoaxed... Winner: Tekotuotanto, one of the members of the jury: Tekotuotanto.

Malodix: Yes you will.

Shifter: Oh, so you talked to Okkie about the Extreme Ironing already? (Right before the first broadcast, Sanna was ironing her shirt, and I was "wait, is this extreme ironing?")
D Fast: Oh, I let anyone sign up for the jury who shows interest in it. I don't care if they have an entry or not. Heck most of the time I can't even find SCENERS who want to be on the jury (I do ask when they stop by the scenebooth.)
a) the jury doesn't decide compo winners (they just do the preselection)
b) for compos involving oldskool platforms, it's quite normal for the jury to include compo entrants, because they have to be around to set up their freaky hardware so that it can be played to the jury. In those cases, the jury member in question is required to omit voting for their own entry.

Malodix, ASSEMBLY is the only mixed breed party, where you can actually find gamers and sceners. It is to my knowledge the only big party with thousands of "average computer users" shutting down their computers to watch compos. My background is in Future Crew, Pehu's, the other main organizer's, is in Accession.

Honestly, if this was gamer party with demos as the sideshow, do you think people would bother entering productions into the 15+ demoscene compos? Looking to the past scene.org awards, prods released at ASSEMBLY have been neck and neck with prods from Breakpoint in terms on nominations and awards.

Demoscene is where we come from and what we continue to respect. But it is not the only thing we do, but certainly, it is the most important thing in terms of amount of time dedicated in program, amount of money dedicated in prizes (roughly 3x the value of game compos). You are more than welcome to come over and challenge your assumptions =).

But the point is taken about extreme graphics.

Abyss: I don't think anyone (apart from people who have never been, and show no interest in going) is questioning Assembly's dedication to the demoscene. :)

i'd think there's more point in questioning someones dedication to the demoscene if he hasn't visited assembly ever. :)

Being the guy who's won the extreme graphics couple of times now, and i'm fairly sure that all the whine is because of those two 256 cölör crowd pleasers.

That being said, i do think the rules suck, and had a few talks with some of the orgs about what you can actually do around in modern software these days, none of the seemed to recall who actually made those rules ;).

But from what i could gather it felt like no one actually really spent that much time thinking about the whole compo and it's rules (it's not like it's the high point of the party).

Personally i would love to see all the oldskool stuff arranged something like compo per platform but sadly i don't see that one happening.

nosfe: Question my dedication as much as you like.

quisten, sure, i question anyones dedication until they've visited the altar of boozembly

and i use smileys after sentences to make it clear that i'm serious as fuck.

nosfe: that altar looks like the only one that might possibly convert me to any of the 'religions' I managed to avoid quite successfully until now! I'll try and make it to Boozembly next year for my ritual cleansing.

just wondering: does the god(des) of boozembly accept vegetables as sacrificial offerings as well?

sure!

ted, yes, there were plenty of mushrooms and tomatoes being cooked - Of course, you'll get lots of shoving, beating, sneering at and stuff like that.

but definitely the tomatoes were tasty.
