MindCandy Volume 3 - demo playlist feedback
category: general [glöplog]
phoenix, it sure would be when the demo is fucking excellent.
The demo *is* fucking excellent, but 10+ minutes of simulated video noise would take up so much space to reproduce without artifacts that it would knock 5 other demos out of the list.
Well, knock some mfx demos out then :)
(black woman stands up in the audience, snaps her fingers) "Oh no he di-int!"
Why not to try Iridescence instead of... "Faded Memories", for example? This demo is pretty, atmospheric and very unusual. I think it deserves to be on this disc.
@Trixter
AH sweet.

I guess a DVD anthology titled "interesting demoscene productions" would be a much more fruitful idea than "Win32 democompo winners from the last two years"
That depends on what the goal is. The way you define "fruitful" probably differs a lot from the way trixter defines it. Also, it is pretty much up to anyone to start a project like this, it's just that trixter have actually done this twice already, and is therefore a likely candidate to get the job done.
Yes, there's definitely room in this world for quite a bunch of demo DVD projects representing different opinions, goals, audiences etc, and I agree that it is a better waste of time to start a project of one's own than to try to persuade people who are still stuck with the 1990s demoscene mindset.
being that we haven't compiled pc demos since.. 2001/2002, we want to catch up on the favorites first, before digging deeper. yes, the playlist leans heavily toward certain groups, but a certain level of consistency can make for a better viewing experience overall, as opposed to "close your eyes and pick 30 random demos from pouet".
2 phoenix, trixter: So, what exactly do you think about Iridescence?
goloboro: it's good and original. unfortunately, with really small dots, i'm afraid it would get "washed out" in video encoding, and there's just too much black background. and the music and mood take a long time to build up. thanks for suggesting it, i don't think i've actually watched it before!
phoenix: Thank you for replying. I respect your opinion, but I'd want to notice that:
1) 828's specific mood also builds up during not-so-short period of time.
2) Chromosphere consists mostly of 2 colours - black and white. But in that case nobody complains abput "too much black". So what makes the difference between these two cases?
3) About possible video encoding artifacts. Why just not to try-and-see?
"thanks for suggesting it" - You are welcome :-)

And one more suggestion.
How about one of Candela's demos (Fair Play to the Queen or Etch-a-Sketch)? They are nice and very unusual also. And VERY short (slightly above 2 minutes each).
One of them could be a nice addition to the "Dream" section of the disc.

actually, chromosphere (or anything else by sqny for that matter) is a complete bitch to encode at any decent quality. it's all edges and nothing else, pretty much as unsuitable as it gets for modern video codecs.
"Fair Play to the Queen" unfortunately uses illegal samples in the soundtrack (which is part of what makes it awesome :)
gloom: What a shame :-(
Is there any way to come to arrangement with the authors of these samples? Or, maybe it is possible to convince "Candela" to make alternative version of soundtrack (free of those samples) exclusively for "Mindcandy 3"?
I know that both of these ways will heavily complicate the state of affairs. But if the music is the only reason this awesome demo didn't make it to the disc... This will be very pity.

While only hard edges is a bitch, there is a ton of unused non-changing space in Chromosphere so the quantization tables can go pretty low without exhausting bitrate. It works.
If you want to know what gets my encoder's goat, it's all the fake chromatic aberration. It screws up the motion detection, but even if it didn't, there's too much delta to encode.
Just want to say I'm really glad someone who knows what they're doing is in charge here.
You assume too much ;-)
@Insectectuor: they are americans... The only thing they know is moonshine and chewing tobacco ;D
And NASCAR! Don't forget NASCAR!
@Goloboro: I love Iridescence, I think it's a great example of the kind of art that only the scene can produce. As an oldskooler, it's cool seeing morphing IFS taken to a new realtime level.
Unfortunately, the playlist is more or less done, save for one demo that I'm going to give a shot with tonight (don't want to name it to be fair, but it has a certain effect that really gives my encoder fits).
Phoenix suggested privately that, for all the great demos we've had to cut, maybe I should generate/edit/encode them as if they were on the disc anyway, kind-of like web-only extras. I can definitely do that, but being archival quality, they're a bit big for our webhosting. Short of buying a cheap 1&1/dreamhost/etc. account, is there a nice place that would host 10 or so archival quality .MP4 demoscene files? Does scene.org host just individual files, for example?

Is it too late to object to the "pop"-categorization?
it was always too late!
