(time stretching and pitch shifting are not very good for breakbeats anyway, since the algorithms weren't (and in many cases, still aren't) good enough to avoid distorting both transients and groove).

Yeah, this. I layered many a breakbeat on top of eachother using sample offsets to rearrange loops. Mostly apache, amen and funky drummer, but the intro to the Spin Doctors Two Princes was also great to cut up!

randall was one guy i remember being handy with sample offsetting for his breaks. great fun for cut ups :-)
