Parallella: A Supercomputer For Everyone

A Kickstarter project I'm hoping some of you will be interested in (because I really want one, but things aren't looking too good right now).

1st, there are several hypercore companies around and most of them have failed - mostly due marketing issues. For others the point of weakness is development and debugging tool chain.

2nd, in order to develop a high-end chip you need MUCH MORE than $600K. In fact, you probably need about 10 times more than that.

3rd, todays GPUs are very parallel. Sure, parallel programming isn't that easy, but that's doesn't mean that GPUs architecture is flawed to the point that needs to be solved by "doing it from scratch".

Personally, I believe they are going for crowed sourcing as the last resort as they failed to get an investment - IMHO anyway...

I was really interested in this project when I found out about it a couple of weeks ago, but was somewhat put off by this:
Quote:
We are very confident that we can deliver what have proposed! Still, we want to make it clear that we can't guarantee that we will be able to deliver. If you do make a pledge to the Parallella project you are doing it knowing that there is a risk that something will go wrong. The one thing we can guarantee is that we will put our heart and soul into this project (like we did for 4 years when we built the Epiphany processor chips) and that we will be honest and transparent about our progress throughout the Parallella project.

doz: Kickstarter rules dictate that the people behind posted projects declare the likelyhood of success.
