Scene.org Awards discontinued

category: general [glöplog]
Gargaj, that is actually not a bad idea. It needs to be more than just an icon though, some type of ceremony means allot.

This would be a 1:1 replacement for the "public choice" award but I think the question would be who will organize the award and prepare some sort of show (if presented online or at a demo-party, etc).
Another question is how close the list of public voted demos would be to this one, tho.

I was thinking about keeping the categories though. Sure, "pouet's best demo of 2012" is ostensibly "scene.org awards public's choice" but hey.

Not that I want to drag anyone into the spotlight or anything, but I think Ziphoid and his SceneSat team are quite good at arranging (award) shows (like the ROTY awards), so broadcasting some show over SceneSat would also be a possibility, maybe?
wysiwtf: Yeay, we won! \o/ Givf award ;)

+1 for need of ceremony.

I'm all for some kind of awards that are entirely publicly voted. If everyone can vote for best demo, graphics, soundtrack, oldschool, whatever, and the results are based on that, I'd personally consider it to be a lot more fair.

What's going to be interesting is whether or not there'd be a change between jury results and public choice results.

"everybody can vote", well, the idea sounds great but practically this has proven not to work out - even in the scene.org awards. At least not for several categories.

i guess one of the plus points about the scene.org awards was they were decided by people who had a clue, and a pouet awards would lose that :)

Now I feel insulted by smash, there goes my Monday - joking, carry on..

I think it's worth a try to let everybody vote, despite the "nah, that won't work out" - hivemind might solve it, and I actually think it's more fair - though I think the lower placed spots would benefit from a jury.

Crossproduct, I think he has a point - if you put some people in a room and let them decide, they might put more effort in thinking what demos did something - than average demojoe who likes cats. Though I really think the top five wouldn't differ much from a open vote.

Okkie, what would the scene be without drama? Boring, indeed :P

A thriving, productive scene were beautiful real-time art is made to compete and enjoy!

The solution is easy, we remove all warning labels and hope for Darwin to do the rest.

Dunno, every scene has it's own drama, and failures - just like life sucks sometimes - though we're now old enough to deal with it, right? :)

And back to the discussion, both open votes, and curated ones have their benefits - on either side I might not agree on the placement of some demos and might doubt everyones sanity when they don't agree that my chosen demo is the best of them all - kunstbanausen!

the solution is... i will pick the winners. i have a clue and i am famous on pouet. next to that i have experience with jury work, i once peeked over a fench to a beauty contest. sadly they were minor boys so the police had to carry me away once they found out. the fact i was furiously pulling the salmon when they arrived, didnt quite help me.

anyway, i will print the top 50 releases of 2012 on paper. then put them on my dartboard and throw darts. i will draw the categories randomly and then assign the winner (closest to the dart) to it.

as a price you will get a honorary mention on pouet as well as a printed diploma featuring grumpy cat, my little ponies and the letters C, U, N and D.. all signed by Gargaj.
To help you all face reality and move on with your life, I give you a little something: complete happiness

Ah crap, I always had the goal and try to make a demo good enough to get a nomination in the "best oldschool" category. Guess I've missed my chance now! :(

newsflash. we already are an inbred nostalgia club. the kids of these days have other "scenes" to be creative. no need to reinvent ourselves, we're being replaced ;P

! BAM ! ... Nothing is more true than this ! therefore: WORD!

Let me make a bold proposal, and just let people vote who made a demo according to demozoo. Not only would this fill their db, as people who want to vote and arn't listed there yet would add their info, but also make a fair vote - when graphicians vote on graphics, and c64 ppl vote on their platform.

what mod said - neither jury nor open voting is perfect alone. Worse, they both tend to promote the mass-market demos and ignore the quirky stuff (although jury is better at this). It's sometimes nice to get an individual choosing the winners too. But we don't want a dictator, even if it is maali and his fench.

Maybe something like the old setup, plus a special list where each of last year's winners get to pick a demo they think is special.

Let's assume we decide on best breakthrough performance, and we have We Are against Wheels withing Wheels - my guess is (your opinion might vary) that We Are would win the first place in an open vote, and Wheels within Wheels would win with a somewhat chosen palette of voters.

I'd actually would like to see the latter one happening, as in my opinion they deserve it for the hard work - you might disagree..

And yes it's a sort of strawman argument, but also a feeling in my guts.
