BSD is enough for everyone.

I'll grant that I think there are better licenses than the GPL (any version), however, I think for this site it doesn't really matter. The code is open and available for everyone. If you're not going to use the code directly or deploy your own "Pouet" (so to speak), does it matter what flavor of open source it is?

Plus while I don't speak for Gargaj or even pretend to read his mind, I seem to recall he didn't really care what license it would be under and most likely would have objected if he had a problem. He and analogue most likely worked it out in private.

I'd rather we didn't start another fighting and shouting thread.

Long live Pouet, and welcome 2.0!

Unicode in oneliner? Cool!
Now people can do IBM ASCII collaborations with the block chars.

The existing unicode posts (or prods) will, in theory, be preserved and will display correctly.

I'd place a bet on that :D what are the odds?

I hear it rains in the cloud. A bit of water proofing should do it.
isnt it ironic analogue is scared for... pouet analogues?!?!? :P

BSD 3-clause does the latter too, but is less restrictive than GPL.

I'm not exactly a fan of the GPL license, but seriously, for pouet in particular, it doesn't really matter much...

IMO the GPL is a good choice. Pouet is a community thing and so it's only logical to keep its source code as open as possible. It also prevents possible future maintainers of this site to becode dictators and say "screw this, I'm making it closed again. With blackjack! And hookers!" which is a slightly more plausible scenario than anyone simply copying the site. :)

kb: not really, there's a bigger market for cat/pony pictures than blackjack and hookers.

Does it though? A site is only as open as the mechanism that syncs the publicly available source code to the live site. Once that's shut down (and hey, a maintainer can do that via a simple # in the crontab), your license doesn't count for much.

Either way, https://github.com/pouetnet/pouet2.0/blob/master/LICENSE.

Gargaj: Legally speaking it does, at least for the code. Sure, the domain-name etc might still get "hijacked", but at least the GPL provides some additional protection over these lesser licenses.

kusma: That's not what I meant - what I meant is that even though the source is GPL (or AGPL, I guess in this case), it doesn't oblige the maintainer to follow the community contributions, all it obliges them is to release whatever updates _they_ make. So while it's "open", it's not beneficial because it still remains a "dictatorship".

Also an historic moment.
