Riddle me this.

category: residue [glöplog]

Another offtopic post from me.
I tried a couple of posts recently that I would've thought were ontopic and... well here we are. There are a few people here who are willing to to engage in stuff that's not entirely "demoscene" - to those I say you're welcome. To anyone else who wishes to detract, there is a setting in your account that means you don't have to partake. I suggest you find it and chose not to post in "residue" threads. Thank you.

A man has to get a fox, a chicken, and a sack of corn across a river.
He has a rowboat, and it can only carry him and one other thing.
If the fox and the chicken are left together, the fox will eat the chicken.
If the chicken and the corn are left together, the chicken will eat the corn.
How does the man do it?

I know it's a simple one but the purpose of the thread is to maybe gather some more interesting riddles from a community that I would think prides itself on using their brains for something other than just being able to write code that displays rolling text and ribbons ;]

You die. But instead of getting straight to heaven or hell you end up in a room with 2 guards and 2 identical doors. One door leads to heaven and the other one to hell. The guards look completely the same too. The only difference is, that one guard always lies while the other one always speaks the truth. You only have 1 question to figure out which door leads to heaven. What would that question be?
gosh! what's wrong on writing code that displays rolling text and ribbons?!

@ringo: now you will be trapped there ... foreverrrrrrrrrrrr :D
The man takes the chicken to the other side, then he takes one of the two other things to the other side and takes the chicken back, finally he takes the other of the two other things to the other side and then takes the chicken to the other side.

There is a far more difficult variant of this task which is used in Japan as a job recruitment test, somebody posted a link to it to Facebook a couple of weeks ago.

You ask the guard whether the other guard would say the door you point to leads to heaven. If the guard answers "no", it is the door to heaven, otherwise it is the other door.

Well, at least these were ad hoc answers.

where's the riddler when you need him?
I have something about riddles. I am usually not motivated enough to solve some of them. I never solved a Sudoku. I usually prefer to focus my thought on more practical problems, like how can I optimize this algorithm, than random quiz with no purpose. Not saying these are useless, but just I am not motivated enough with riddles as an end in itself, unless there is an interesting perception element in them that teaches me something about thinking.

Like for example two white hats three black hats, cause you needed to get into one's mind and what he observes and thinks about the other wise men, kinda like a second level of thought. And I also enjoy reading the whole arguments about Monty Hall problem.

There are three men in a boat with four cigarettes but no matches. How do they manage to smoke, hm?
