@SiR I just noted the fact that you can hardly call "showing an ad on a page catalogueing / curating demoscene works for the benefit of demosceners" "monetizing" on said work if they're using it to keep the servers running for everybody. I just don't see it that way. Also if you're not ok with that use an adblocker and you're done.
This is in a totally different ballpark than the YouTube channels that upload bad captures (and don't give a sh1t about it) to benefit from the work of others imo.

*NEW* homebrew!

auto scrape DBs, render in emulator and upload one every hour for greater justice.

particularly love how their emulator captures of c64 demos with a BEST DEMO EVER clickbait title has way more views then the official captures that are actually listed on demoscene database sites, or even the stream from the party itself.

theres one YT chan thats gonna disappear when I mortally expire relatively soon- demoscene live videos, dunno what you wanna do about those but I don’t really want them to disappear but they will eventually, I guess. Not sure how accounts fare after death.

none are monetised by me but the compos that used copyrighted music have been by YT, not my fault, i dont get anything I don’t and won’t take comments suggesting I do either.

@m0d: Perhaps these videos can be transferred to scene.org?

Should be fine (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/is-youtube-deleting-old-videos-1234737099/), but there's also inactivity management and adding access to other people to it to have a few backup plans.

I can see Youtube now starting to care about inactive accounts as one way to gain control to video ownership and start gatekeeping access to it. Probably their future depends on it - I'm thinking OpenAI has already run out of text to train their models, they already got wikipedia and all the major news journals and blogs. But they still need more data, their models still improve linearly with the size of the training set, so they are by now most likely starving and eager to pull from Youtube's automatic transcripts as a source of new text; if not the actual video frames for their new multimodal models. But Google won't give that to their competitors for free; so I predict they will start introducing new measures around content ownership, distribution, licensing, etc, starting maybe from innactive accounts that nobody will complain about. They might soon do something about active accounts as well, maybe pretending to do it to protect the artists and creators, while in reality doing it just to keep OpenAI in check. Then OpenAI will have to either pay very high fees to Google for the video data, or make a similar deal with China's Bilibili or Tiktok (the other two large owners of video content).

So while these Youtube channels full of demo captures surely don't make more than $5 a month in add revenue today, there might be a future where owning hours of video content is actually a very lucrative business model. And Google won't be necessarily asking where the content in all these channels came from; I'm sure we creators are already signing some sort of small lettered agreement on content ownership when we post a video that protects Google anyways.

</end of conspiracy theory>

I guess what I'm saying is that in the year 2025 you can as Google Assistant to "make me an action sequence with dinosaurs and space monkeys fighting, but in the style of an Commodore 64 graphic animation and with a chiptune soundtrack", and it does it, you'll know where the data came from ^__^

google/youtube has a big headstart because others can only grab their reencoded crap versions of all that video material, no conspiracy needed kthxbye :P

to batch edit those links and to REMOVE them, damn :D

That's why I removed all my demo and non-demoscene orientated content from YT, skip it as much as possible and turned to other video streaming services that are less aggressively milking on my attention.

I even tried to link them here.. but I was pointed to FAQ/terms of use or whatever local regulation that only YT is supported for whatever idiotic reason. I find LIBRE and Odesee quite legible alternative as the author's voice.

Conspiracy or not.. there is some new internet revolution cooking when we speak about AI/LLM innovations.

Hehe.. encode it a video file your little playa.exe can play.. bundle that up to a proper .dat file to conceal the truth.. if the bitrate is right.. one can even win Revision unspotted... and I'm sure it will be significantly smaller than average demo size these days...

I just want to put my head above the parapet and say that I run a youtube channel with Amiga demos. I don't monetise and have no intention of doing so but just in case anyone in this thread comes across their stuff on my channel (you'll be able to tell it's me from the channel name but I won't advertise it here) and you don't want it on there, please just let me know and I will remove it immediately.

@arpz: Love your channel. So many prods I never see before.

@gaspode, thank you, it's always been my aim to focus on getting stuff up there that isn't already and I hope by sticking to that I avoid stepping on the toes of anyone doing the same but in an official capacity - I'll stand by my promise to not monetise the content (I can't anyway because I don't have enough subs/views but if somehow the audience for very old demos blows up overnight I still won't monetise). There have been a handful of videos that have been picked up by YouTube for having a 'stolen' melody from a pop track or whatever, not much I can do about that but the money isn't going to me, it's going to the labels.

Somewhat amusingly (and I've probably told this story already elsewhere), before I started doing the captures more regularly I got a copyright strike against a cracktro capture that featured random voice's mod.monday because supposedly the video stole music from a present day EDM producer who has made a tune called "keygen" that sampled the original mod, I challenged that and won and will continue to do so for situations where it's feasible I will win.

Honestly the whole thing has been incredibly rewarding, I've enjoyed watching so many demos, learned a lot during the process and *still* plan to eventually get to the point of getting some 68k code of my own hosted on scene.org one of these days.

Reiterating one last time, and sorry for the wall of text, if anyone has any objections for whatever reason to having their work featured on my channel, please do not hesitate to get in touch - I will remove without any arguments at all. I want to be an ally to this scene, not a detriment.

@Gargaj thanks thats great info especially adding more people to the account. Appreciated.

@Gaspode Time is of the essence, but I would like to export all those videos indeed. Manually? I could about make it. :-)

Hi all regarding Demoscene Live Videos (@Demoscener @ YouTube)

Its taken me a few days in batches of pages to manually download all the videos (just over 400) totaling 21.1 gigabytes.

I don't have the originals anymore, they would have made it impossibly large to handle, but 21.1 GB is manageable in YouTube's impressively (to me) compressed format for handy cam quality videos :D

Who do I send these to for archival, or in general?

If not clear why: i am terminal so making preparations.

scene.org seems appropriate I guess. I'm not sure on whats needed to FTP, ftp.scene.org allows anonymous login, and theres an incoming directory, but it's easilly been 15+ years since I last used it.

Also, to get the thread back on track, enigma described the situation on youtube perfectly some years ago.

I would like to add some notes as my previous comment is from 2017:

Ad pressure on youtube has gotten worse. Without ad-blocker ads are inserted on basically every video interrupting it randomly. This is also the case on non-monetized channels.

I have not worked on capturing old demos for a while now not because I don't have the equipment and toolchain to do that in a good quality, but the whole environment has changed drastically. There are a lot channels like the mentioned @rollenspielhaus that automatized create a capture every ~4 hours with questionable quality. These monetized channels are also preferred to be recommended by the YT algorithm. With only getting a few views for a capture where I had a bit of effort setting up actual fitting hardware it is then much more that I do that only for myself. But for that I can just watch it on the actual hardware.
Also it happens quite often that the whole channel or parts are simply copied and reuploaded by other channels, that are (surprise) monetized.

On the other hand, comments below the captures were mostly positive, some even from original creators. I had not a single take down request.

I have not seen a single ad on any Youtube video for 10? years.

On Opera, Firefox, Chrome on various Windows PCs. Obviously I use the appropriate adblockers and I'm logged in.

On 'devices' and consoles I'm out of my depth. I don't own any consoles and I don't use my phone to watch videos because screens are tiny, not fit for viewing.

Now obviously I understand that Google's master plan was always: to fail with Google Video, buy YT for $1.65billion (for the accounts), change it, make it about accounts like everywhere else, and then abuse those accounts until the accounts PAY. Every month. And then if they don't pay, degrade service and quality until they pay. It's not an original concept... traditional mafia extortion strat...

If logging in and blocking ads is refused, everyone Demoscener can upload a video to Vimeo or better archive.org (and support them with money!).

Everyone can also use the DuckDuckGo search engine, browser, and Youtube player. The Google search engine is not as good as it once was, and duckduckgo.com has improved drastically.

Firefox, Opera GX, there are many options (if you have not been Store(TM) consolified on your viewing platform/'device', whateveritis.)

Please learn.

I want to add that I have not paid 1 cent to YT (and they have also not paid 1 cent to me, for 35K impressions/month for 10 years). The reason that I have 0 ads is my previous comment, there has been no money exchange.

And this is fine with me - but I have previously alerted everyone about the quality degradation of existing perfect quality uploads to YT. Before Google bought YT, this was not the case. The uploads stayed in the quality they were uploaded - as every "content creator" should expect.

YT is just a random streaming site. They just found a window IDK 2010-2013. Today, it's easy to replace it for our purposes. Video captures are short and tiny.
