mbb/TUM passed away

category: general [glöplog]
Just heard the terrible news through the grapevine.

I fondly remember MBB as one of the most welcoming people in the scene.
When I first met him at BP2k7, he was one of the people that would engage with the newbies in the scene.

I was one of the introverted little shits that was pretty apprehensive at first, not knowing what to expect of those "weird drunk hackertypes" at demoparties, and MBB was one of the people I had a pleasant conversation with at the time. It definitely was one of the reasons that I kept coming back.

He was a very laidback dude, and he will be sorely missed.

Rest in peace, mate.
My condolences to his kids and family, and people he left behind.

My deepest respect for all he did for the demoscene. i wasn´t not close to him but as everybody here from the scene, we are brothers at the end.

Sad to read that so many people left us already. Somehow i still think... Leaving means an age around end of 60th or even 70th... But this isn´t the truth. Life is precious, so our people are. In their work, in our memories, they all are inmortal. RiP.
This fucking sucks. I met MBB when I started getting involved as a host for the easter parties, he was a man of many talents and many sides. Crafty, creative, funny, kind and his calm, nerdy exterior could make his belligerent yelling at a big screen during a compo when he thought shit sucked bewildering for people that didn't know him well.

I still have the 'pimp cane' he made for me for Breakpoint 2009 (Brokepoint) when I was a pimp host throwing money around. He made it as an afterthought, just a wooden ball on a stick painted black and silver, but it really made my whole party strutting around on it. He was always amused when I brought up I still had it, we now use it to spin the discoball in our kitchen when the sunlight is right on it to have a disco.

Another memory is him talking about his family and kids, him welling up when I explained my tattoo (which is a drawing my dad did) cause he was a dad and found that incredibly moving. Hoping he would leave a mark like that on his kids.

I'm sure he did, he left a mark on all of us. He ran so much of demoparty-demoscene, just like Acryd, that partygoers will _MISS_ him, in things that aren't there.

Goodbye my friend, I didn't know you as well as I now realize I wanted, I will miss you incredibly.

Another sad day for the scene.

Quote:
That desk that Evilbot stood behind at Revision, he made that.. Its perhaps still in his garage.
It still gets used for the Meteoriks awards show every year (sans the 'Evilcorp' logo now).

My most memorable moment with mbb, the "Forlift incident", has already been mentioned by docd (That was my foot holding the bent metal piece in place as mbb went at it with the angle grinder.), but there were so many other moments where mbb was always ready to lend a hand, be that hanging the cloth in the seminar areas, or helping build the moving head truss towers in the hall.

He will be greatly missed as the cheerful, always laid back, and funny person that he was.

Sigh, another one of the really goodhearted people left :-( I spend quite some time with him putting up all kind of decorations when i was also breakpooint-orga, also went by his home picking up and loading stuff with a van. He was the one who made tUM always a cozy place and who would just grin on us when frying fries and doing bbq indoors. Also his famous tUM-bowle at Buenzli was long awaited and served with fresh flavours. We also met and talked again after a long break due to corona on the Underground Conference. What a loss :-( I feel so sorry also for his family :-( Again a strong reminder to not loose focus on your goals, time can be very restricted :-(
RIP, my condolences to madame and the rest of his family.

I met mbb at a few parties over the years but I mainly remember hanging out with him at the paddling pool at Outline. Really chill guy, and a good laugh. A real tragedy for him to go so young, let alone leaving a family behind like this. :(
We’ve had so many adventures during the years that it’s hard to pick just one or two stories.

We’ve been pretty much inseparable at demo parties and in real life for many years which included mundane things like building kitchens and repairing things at my families retreat in France, always up for stupid jokes, pranks and others shenanigans which almost always included annoying Petra and madame. We’ve spent days and hours playing rockband while stupidly drunk, went on hikes and enjoyed each others company.

We’ve thrown hard disks out of a driving car, prototyping and building trebuchets and rockets to win competitions at Underground Conference. For the same party we were fierce competitors at the sid headbanging compo by smacking ourselves with ladders and cracking ribs in the process.

We’ve yelled “scheisse” at competitions at various parties if we disliked what we saw, unplugged PAs during concerts that we thought were terrible, annoyed a lot of people by blasting our own music over announcements and halfway took over parties that let us get away with our stupid things and ideas. All in good faith and never thrown out, we were a force to be reckoned with.

You brought me into organizing the Ultimate Meeting in 2002 and did that together with benJam and Madame until the last one in 2013. There we had fun making the weirdest openings at any party I’ve been at. From playing doctors handing out smarties as pills to storming the stage dressed as pirates to save the occasional damsel in distress.

We’ve driven thousands of kilometers to Sundown to visit Stonehenge and drink with friends on the beach, brought our own projectors and hacked Partymeister to upload nonsensical slides and projecting a picture of a plate of Sauerkraut on a university building at Numerica.

Together we’ve organized and witnessed some of the best demoparties spanning three decades.

Without you I wouldn’t be the person that I am today. Without you there would be no Revision. Without you, my life would be much emptier than it has been.

I will miss you dearly

This is (a sadly incomplete) recording of MBB performing his entry for the "SID Headbanging Competition" at UC11 2021.

Background - The SID Headbanging Competition at Underground Conference was originally explained as:

"This competition one day used to be about doing headbanging on stage while some c64 SID track was being played. It escalated quickly from there, from people beating each other with ladders, over hurtful body slams, up to rather weird on-stage performances.

Basically, anything goes, as long as you are on stage and a SID song is playing in the background while you are doing whatever you believe to have to do."

Over the years, MBB was one of the most weird and artistic performers in this competition. He's won most of them.

Happy crying. :(

And to augment D.Fox' memories on his and mbb's "compo entry" here is a clip from the UC6.22 "SID Headbanging" compo entry from 2002.

In additional roles: DasTier and ryg.

Not sure if that was the year where mbb broke a rib in his performance (he broke so many body parts at UC over the year...)?
