Why is Slengpung frozen since 2020?

category: general [glöplog]
What are the reasons and who decided it? Is there a chance to fill it with 'scene'-life, again?

Sigh. Okay. I was hoping not to get this discussion driven into the ground as well, but here goes:

On the most basic level the site has no active personnel left; I took upon myself with some help to move the site from hosting to hosting, because there have always been problems, and the backend was shit so we had to disable some of it cos the old code was broken - I rewrote most of the frontend on a whim, so the site is still vaguely functional.

The larger problem is, of course, that 2023 is no longer 1993 or even 2003 and the public sensibilities about privacy have changed, and even putting potential major, MAJOR privacy issues aside of people putting up pictures of other people with their names attached against their consent (which is at least 2-3 different ways of GDPR violations at LEAST), tech culture has gotten to a point where there is a good enough reason to ensure full control of your likeness, whether it's deepfakes, governmental agencies or for-profit companies aggressively scraping the web for data for varying degrees of shady purposes (whether it's ClearView or LAION), or just the fact that what we used to joke about ("the people next to you are smoking weed, what do you have to say for yourself" in e.g. a job interview) has suddenly gotten out of the realm or parody and is now solid reality - sure, we have a robots.txt, but that's an honour system. Call me paranoid (and I don't think I am, in 2024 - and I'm purposely leaving out some of the worst things), but this is no longer an issue that should go unaddressed...

...which is why I wrote an email about this in 2021 to the Slengpung mailing list and after a minuscule discussion I got 3-4 messages in private about how I should ignore everyone else's opinion and do Only One Single Thing, where the "One Thing" varied wildly, running the full gamut between "do absolutely nothing" to "shut the site down permanently".

I don't want to deal with this anymore, I don't want to be in charge of these decisions, I don't want to mediate, and at this point I don't fucking CARE. * What I said above outlines a situation where I highly doubt anyone else would want this on their plate either because it's an absolute fucking minefield of the unstoppable force of subcultural / community demand colliding with the immovable object of private consent and frankly good luck figuring that out - whoever says there's an easy solution with no tears shed is either delusional or purposely ignoring the other half of the equation.

(* Frankly I don't want to deal with any of this shit anymore, Pouet, sceneorg, etc, included, but what can you do?)

server issues. people who originally maintained it faded into inactivity.

think gargaj was trying to ressurect it at some point but lacking someone to pick up the work, if you're volunteering to do it you should chat with him.

i have the feeling modern GDPR concerns makes the topic a bit more touchy for others to want to deal with.

Thank you Gargaj, in think this statement was necessary. Maybe its an open door now, that leads to a solution, don't underestimate pouet's swarm intelligence.

Win some, lose some.

I've been here since (almost) the beginning (2002) and I've seen the ups and downs (and oh boy, the teething troubles during the early days, they were a mess).

What I'm trying to say: You took some right decisions, and this place ain't as bad as some make it to be (in fact, better than the norm)

But I get it, these "long running project marathons" sometimes make you question whether you are not actually wasting your time.

You don't. Thank you for your time and keep up the good work !

Some ideas from the pouet swarm intelligence:
* to prevent/minimize scraping one can only access the site with a scene.id account that was created >3 days ago (you could make this even more strict by additionally have it invite-only or other measures, but I think the waiting would be enough of a pragmatic trade-off to serve the community)
* only registered users who agreed being tagged can be tagged
* users get notifications when they got tagged
* users can remove their tags any time
* users can choose to get their face blurred on images they are being tagged on (and then the tag being removed)
* users can request to have an image of themselves deleted and the request will be processed by other active users (if nobody reacts after 5 days it will be auto-deleted)

Maybe I will find some day the time to sit down and code this thing. I would at least volunteer to help

also what bsp said above: <3

ah some more:
* only registered users can upload images
* images need to be approved by x other randomly selected active users
* Images can be upvoted and downvoted
* downvoted images with a negative balance of X downvotes are hidden by default (kinda like the pouet logo upload thingy)

If you want to make it invite only:
* Invites could be handed out on a flyer at the demoparty where the pictures are taken (aka any demoparty, validated users can request invite codes), one.flyer per person, the moment the people get their votekey

better: have it handed out together with the wristband. flyers are A4-sized-bw-printed sheets with individual codes on them

sounds great, fire up PHP and go, venom!
No form of security by obscurity is going to work. In the end, what the site is for is putting up pictures of other people online, and that ship has sailed. I wish it wasn't so, but that's how it is. I have many fond memories of me on Slengpung, but I wouldn't shed a tear if it was gone.

Ideas are easy to come out... coding them into something viable requires a lot of work, time and effort and sometimes it makes me wonder is it worth it...?

For the time being why not make it login only with sceneid? Only those with a sceneid created after, say 15 days have passed, can access the pictures and logins can be recorded like searches did, in case someone breaks the law and uploads pictures somewhere else without permission of said person...

I have beef with someone and I;ve made a ton of accounts with the codes I got from people at revision that don't care about this site. I've downvoted all their photos with my army of bots and am wreaking havoc all over the site.

I also love that even companies with paid employees would have a p hard time implementing all those features solidly, so good luck getting a bunch of volunteer sceners to do this.

Picture sites are from the past, put some shit on Facebook or share as a link here, for how long that still flies.

Why don't we just replace slengpung with AI generated pictures of sceners.
don't give them ideas man!

Dealing with all the shit that comes from maintaining all these sites, and of course dealing with all of us and our views, all these years, isn't, indeed, an easy task to undertake. So a huge thank you from me, as well.
