Gathering 06
category: general [glöplog]
Message for all the gathering orgas and attendants : Thanks for the experience, it was a really cool party. The ONLY party with a swimming pool !
I would say that people should give the gathering a chance in the years to come. It is an interesting experience, 5 days spent in this -out of this world- country. Snowing in April ? Hehe, only in Norway.
(ok and in Alaska. and in Siberia. ok ok in many places - but where else can you wake up to 'Banana phone' ? ) :^)

the day a pizza in norway (and especially at the gathering) costs less than what it would cost NASA to put a man on the moon, I would consider going.
dubmood: Pigs will probably grow wings before the cost of life in Norway goes down.
Just bring a few kilos of sultanas and eat that over the 4 days. It worked in the war, so why not now.
They also give away free milk. But too much milk + sultanas = ... Long toilet queues.
Bon appetit

Thanks for the praise, Navis :) I'm very happy with how the party worked out, although I of course have a list of improvements for next year. Reclaiming the old table rows for the demoscene area is one of them. Also, more demoscene seminars as they are really popular with the newbies.
TG was nice.
Too bad I was here as a partner and haven't had time to hang in the demo area or go swimming.
The network and seminars were great.
Nonetheless I have 3 'improvements' in mind :
1. more time to vote for the intros/demos
2. more toilets
3. going out of the ship on sunday was painful. It didn't striked the security guys that they should swap the in & out paths. People going in with their bare hands went through a wide path while people carrying heavy stuffs out went trough a narrow path, and to topple that a security asshole even checked if they had their TG bracelet. How on earth does he think they got in ? Everybody is checked when going in.

yeah, nice TG this year. nicest TG-year in my book. but if they put two pro-gamer clans in the demoscene area next year i'll personally kill them, throw them on a lorry and dump them somewhere out of sight (and odour-range) myself.
Yes, thanks for coming over, navis.. Good talking to you again :)
Was some problems this year, as always, but at least me manage to keep track of which timezone we reside in ;)

and navis: thanks for releasing that wonderful demo at the gathering, it really rocks!

The date maybe?
This was definately my best TG-experience ever, although it took me almost 4 hours to get seated because of space-greedy gamers in the demoscene-area.
Duckers: tell me when next year, and I'll help you torture and kill them.
Navis: it was real nice meeting and talking to you, keep the goodies coming :)

Glad that you seem to enjoy the party. My only problem with TG is that one has to keep such a low profile on the drinking. This basically means you have to eat space cakes the whole party and ,that can be a disturbing experience.
back when i was still a participant and not an organizer, we used to keep the booze in a computer-chassis box under the table. worked like a charm. it's very possible to enjoy some alchohol at tg, just stay clear of the MASSIVE BOOZE-FEST some people seem to be on a collision course with. :)
Regarding the pro. CS dudes in the scene area!
Having to finish a demo with a CS clan (and their groupies) yelling at their opposition made it quite difficult to focus on demo creation. That sucked! But it's always nice to answer their "what game are you playing?" questions. :)
And thanks to Navis for the input on colorscheme.
Oh,.. Yes,.. Let's not forget Duckers demo-making session which seem to kickstart a lot of kids.

Actually, there were no pro CS teams on TG. Perhaps with the exception of Aftermath. However, _pro_ gamers don't shout and yell. Kids do, but kids aren't pro gamers :)
gloom: Well, I'm so tired of the hide and seek game :)

About...
.. the seating: The keyword is 'GAMERS'. There shouldn't be any in the demoscene-area. It makes no diff. if they are pro or not.
.. the restroom facilities: To few toilets based on the queues, and to few soapdispensers based on the panic of the people responsible for soap-usage. You can only squeeze that much soap out of a certain number of dispensers:)
.. the demos: No jokes this year. My impression was that everybody did their best, and hopefully the firsttimers decide to continue making demos. If they do, I'm sure we'll se even more kickass stuff next year. Also Duckers demo-making sessions deserve a thumbs up for insipring the kids to start coding
Navis: Nobody forced you to drink all the milk;)

Navis: breakpoint had a swimming pool in 04. (or was it '03? i think it was '04...)
At first I thought he ment that the TG organisers created a swimming pool inside the Vikingship, but apparantly it just means the visitors had free access to a separate swimming pool..
... so let's add to the list that Wired'95 (and probably '94 too) already had that :-)
