Well... Don't know what to say. A demo I've been waiting for a long long time. Massive on big screen, almost too daunting to watch alone at home. Very rarely emotions nor atmosphere is pushed to this level in demo format.

I really would've loved this, had it been devoid of all the technical glitches (linear filtering, near plane clipping, blending artifacts) :(
Many many very powerful parts and I expect to like this the more I watch it, but on the first watch at home, some parts were WAY too garish and ugly. (Like that CGA-looking part somewhere in the middle.)

An awesome demo, but definitely NOT "the best in years". At least not on the first watch.

one good effect (mfx-like particles in blue gamma).
demo looks as Visualise try to copy mfx & kewlers style and place it into sci-fi world.
I don't know why "aether" and other mfx prods looks good, and in same time this prod doesnt.
In fact, Mfx do same, but more, more better.

maybe pig but 14 mb.

IMHO the music was something like "Waiting for Cousteau goes Industrial" (respects to ps anyway) but the demo itself had something that made me keep watching and eventually liking it. I wish the credits part effect had been longer.

The direction is great, some effects are amazingly neat, but I'd like to some more things this year before proclaiming this one as "best prod in eons" ;)

Nice work, but yeah, not even close to being the best in years. Moody visuals, and i loved the watery(?) scene. But, i have to be honest not my cup of tea and struggling to give it a thumb.
Maybe it needs the big screen atmosphere.

Probably I such silly, but I do not see anything good in this work. " We wish to become abrupt conceptual and alternative ". But it has not made impression upon me, not дотерпел up to the end of a demo, has pressed esc

Extraordinary FR style! Creepy! Some scenes feels like watching alien movies. Nice sound fx but I like a demotune more than only soundfx in a demo. Respect for making this demo! When demo is finished (I used 1028 x 768 verion of demo) my windows is totally bugged with like 16 colours left ? Lowres screen. I will reboot now ;) Hope to see FR-50 at bp07 (which will hopefully has the same impact or more as FR-25 :)
Cheers!

give me a break. Where's that massive amount of content? Tons of artifacts and fast made scenes? The same old code like in the past 10 demos? The same textures with the same generated cloud like patterns with fonts on?
No! The times when you put dozens of blending planes and some distorted primitives must end at once. The MFX demos (ie "Deities") had some kind of screenplay. Moreover they were simply coded by hand in some parts which explains some distortions. This one is just an ordinary "put everything" together before compo demo. People, try to understand that this is not a best way to create. Whatever. You can start to hate me from this moment.

uuuhh.. first i thaught it was just art, but then i watched it again on a lower resolution and without multisampling and realized.. "hey, that constant glitching sound weren't supposed to be there after all!?", and the demo played back much smoother and faster. I suppose there is a bug somewhere, so i'll watch it again some times before making up my mind

Thumb up mainly for the immense amount of design that has gone into it. There were some beautiful scenes but for me I found most of it very odd. Not disturbing, just strange. I don't really know if I like it but I respect it.

turning off multisampling seems to do the trick here as well. i didn't get any dx-error but the demo played back very slowly (not as in low fps, but as in timestretch) with constant annoying clicking sounds when multisampling was enabled. watched it again in now in what i suppose was a correct playback. it looks and feels good!

Probably this as close to Visu's dreams and vision as it gets, which is touching, scary and impressive at the same time.
Great work, with some technical rough edge (like Gargaj noted) that doesn't really degrade the viewing experience.

thats just kick ass.. In the beginning I was a bit put off by the sharp edges and envmappish uv coords, but the style kind of grew throughout and in the end I thought this was how it had to look. Is this the innard of some cyborgs brain or what? I have to watch it again.. The scene that struck me as the most beautiful is the underwater one (or in womb?) with the particles and bubbles.. just great.

Ok, first off, I'll admit that I don't like ambient demos. I'm one of the few that though the fulcrum sucked back in 1998... I'll go straight ahead:

The music in this one really didn't work for me, the mood too me means just boring. I can't believe how someone actually sat through this thing at the party and at the same time were amazed(!?) and then voted for it. I haven't checked the competition out though..

The code and all work to put it together is massive and impressive in a way, no-one can deny that. But farbrausch have done so much better stuff in the past, like the obvious popular demo and for instance theta which I thought was brilliant.

In most part of the demo I couldn't understand what I was watching, for some this might be a good thing, but for me it certainly isn't. Call it art if you'd like to but I didn't get it. The last scene with the credits was the nicest one if you ask it, and second to that I liked the spline thing with the circle in the beginning.

I think a thumb up means instant recommendation to a friend, but I can't think of anyone that I might recommend this to, so no thumb for you. Sorry, you made a good effort.

just about saved from being horrible by a couple of flashes of almost greatness.

lets forget the "technical" issues - the same nasty alphablended white lowres-textured polygonal stuff sticking around that has blighted visualice's stuff for ages, ugly polygonal objects where they really don't fit (and no postfx to help smooth it out), bad textures, bad uv mapping, layers that dont really look good and a whole raft of other problems. and lets ignore the sound (which i pretty much did anyway - it does nothing for me).
my problem with it is on the artistic side. to me it feels old and stale - like a series of images taken from a bunch of movies and glued together with added pretentiousness. sorry, it gave me nothing.

as i said tho, saved by a couple of parts which did provide some strong imagary.

there were some moments of sheer beauty, while some scenes were nearly ugly - like the crushing-ball part and some others. the music was very cool and athmospheric.

sure there's been lot of work & thought behind this, yet i still can't understand the enthusiasm shown here. when it comes to more avantgarde demos, this one can't reach some of the satori masterpieces _by far_ - simply because it's not on-point enough.

OK, after I read some comments, viewed the video version, and took the time to think about it, I decide to add a deserved thumb up, with some comments:

- I do realize that it's "one more step" in graphical enhacement, that follows the "shader-way-of-doing" (like lots of prods these years), and use visualice talent for colour/tint calibration at his best, always with a painter point of view, and maybe also "lighting engineering" . (If you can't understand that, the demo has effectiveley no interest.) So this is all a work on calibration details, just to make it beautiful, and also on the way the objects move. Globally, it's just translating and shading objects, but it gives some interesting direction. (an object make the ball disappear just as your eye come on it, keeping a static circular object in the center,...that is a clever direction.) . So , clear thumb up for that.

The codework look a bit hidden behind, and may be seen as the a classic-shader codework, but It can't be a reproach at all. Each demo has to focus something. The main difficulty to make a graphical work like that is to fire the coders out the room, finnaly, because they simply can't have nothing to do at this level.

the bad side, to my mind: this is a complete abstract-shaped demo, unlike some other FR demos like candytron, that were describing procedurally real things, like women or voices.
Here, everything is abstract, and it is so easy to do bizarre shapes, and give no clear sense to what you show. So to my mind, this is a *very* good demo, but certainly not the best for years.

... Hey, by the way people, the "Coup De Coeur" thing is about to point out unknown prods and give them more attention when it's need, and in no case it stands as a "superthumb". Obviously, this prod may not be a good CDC candidate as it will reach top one everywhere and everyone will talk about it for years,... it will be annoying as hell.

BSOD-ed on me, so I watched the video.

Truck just said on irc that this is the kind of demo which you either get or you don't. Well, I think I get the demo (loved the atmosphere and I have the feeling that this demo will become even better when you've watched it more often).

However, I don't "get" the coup-de-coeur mass hysteria. Why does this demo have 14 cdc's while for example deitis by mfx has only one? That ain't fair :-)

Looks like we have our new Chimera for 2007. What's with the CDC overdosage? Get a grip already.

Very nice moments in this one, unfortunately it's also extremely overrated by the audience. Yes, it's got a few great scenes. Yes, it has a lot of content. But no, it's not the best demo ever. Plenty of disjointed moment and scenes that no amount of goatee and turtleneck will make up for.

Maybe it'll grow on me if I watch it a bit more, but I'm not really sure. It will probably make for a good beanbag + beer session.

very ethereal style which makes it stand out from most other demos. but it doesn't "read" well. too messy. i guess the closest comparison on the scene would be MFX's stuff (such as Golem, Aether) which is just as abstract yet reads perfectly and is a lot more "solid", even considering their abstract themes.

Nice demo but I sense a lot of people here are being swept along by group hysteria.

First I thought it was buggy on my GF 6600 GT but then I read Smash's comments and realized it was the actual demo...

Quote:
the same nasty alphablended white lowres-textured polygonal stuff sticking around that has blighted visualice's stuff for ages, ugly polygonal objects where they really don't fit (and no postfx to help smooth it out), bad textures, bad uv mapping, layers that dont really look good and a whole raft of other problems. [...]
my problem with it is on the artistic side. to me it feels old and stale - like a series of images taken from a bunch of movies and glued together with added pretentiousness. sorry, it gave me nothing.

Waiting for a final with more polished work and better design for a thumb up.

Inspiring. Like many great movies, I feel I'll watch this once and not again but that once was a journey for me. Sure a few of the alpha layers were unnecessary and even ugly but I dont care: there is grace and power here. If the next one had a point, a direction, a statement beyond the artistic style it would be the only real improvement you could make (but IMO a necessary one).
Thankyou for that demo. It was very special.

ps: about that "putting everything together before compo". I don't want to make a debate here on someone's prod page, but let me get it straight. I realize that some of you think that demoscene is amateurish, and you're right. But it's mostly because you want to stay in this sauce. It's easier to not watch productions from other sources than demoscene because they're simply better. What worries me is that this production is plain ugly, does have nothing in similar with art and has a lot of artifacts which can be easly to spot. The problem is that some people that have built their respect in the past are now using the same old effects. Like smash has already said the whole production is old and stale, but some FR grouppies are still active. It's just sad that people who were once building this society with fresh ideas are now trying to keep it in the form it used to be back in 1999-2002 (the infamous "liquid... wen?" demo). Demosceners! The world is turning around and believe me that sometimes it is good to change sth. And there are groups and productions that bring sth new. But not this prod. Quit with the CDC and best demo of the year/ever thing. Check some other communities and see that we need to put a "little" more effort, if we don't want to get rotten and forgotten.
I believe Farbrausch can do better than this.

I agree with bonzaj on some points though. People should watch other communities and get some fresh inspiration and there could be some better stuff in here.. Shadows, bumpmaps... maybe even some general technique to make the objects disappear where they aim to cut each other would be nice.. some kind of "use the z-buffer to make stuff close each other transparent" which I have seen demonstrated on billboard explosions.. Not sure if there were any coders at hand to help out with such features here though..

@visualice:
As a long term silent fan, I am absolutely stunned about this production. It not only shows an incredible talent (which by itself is a nice thing) but real artistic development (which I feel is very rare in the demo scene). I am really happy that you are still active and contributing. And at the same moment, I am somehow affraid that you at some point draw the conclusion that demo scene and art do not fit together and leave us, just like statix did.

About the production:
pro:
- Stunning soundtrack and atmosphere. I was not second "bored". I like demos I can think about, before watching them again. And again. I really doubt that this could be a "party production", because it looks like someone has put some thought into the theme before starting to build it.

contra:
- Some low poly objects disturb the overall quality
- Some minor sync problems (two or more frames off the tune)
- Some of the organic objects didn't look good enough.

@bonzaj:
Together with visualice you are one of my favorite scene artists and I am anxiously waiting of a new production for you for the last few years. I clearly remember our discussions at evoke about editing and art. So I can not understand your comments on this production. I know there are glitches and there aren't any of those cool new asd-like shaders and stuff. But I love the scene for it's diversity and tolerance. If we were at film business I would never dare to release any of my own productions, because I only can use Mad's old directx 7 engine. And would just laugh at me, what I use such outdated technology.
But here everybody can do his stuff with the technology he decides to use. Some use c64, some werkkzeug, some complex pixel shader pipelines. And most us have enough understanding to estimate what can be done with the used technology. For me watching this demo was just like watching Simpsons. I forgot about its render technology. I just saw a story. And for me this story was breathtaking trip.

I feel pity for the cynics, for their realm of experience is tragically limited.

...

After the compo, I had a discussion with a friend, who thought the demo looked too slick and "plastic". And I do understand his point of view. I myself often find certain types of "dark" demos to be hindered by the unintendedly polished and obviously computer generated modern demo look.

However, this doesn't apply here. 828's darkness is a whole other type of darkness.

In the context of art, there is a set of obvious immediate connotations with the word "dark". Gloomy, gritty, desperate, hopeless, depressing. This is somewhat unfortunate, since there are more shades of dark than that. This is most evident in dark ambient music, where dark tones are utilized to convey a rather broad spectrum of atmospheres. From ritualistic ambient concerning the spirits of the earth to cosmic sound constructions dealing with visions of the immeasurable unknown, darkness is used to evoke visions of forces that are vast, remorseless and immensely dwarfing to us, but not necessarily malevolent.

To me, 828 is an exceptionally fine example of space mysticism, a visual representation of incomprehensible forces and protocols at work beyond our range of vision, both spatially and dimensionally. Harsh burnthrough contrasts, noise layers, smudgy blurs - tools that are well tested and fine wherever grittiness is desired - would only have cheapened the experience here.

Or maybe I've got it all wrong. I have the freedom to do that. That's the beauty of art.

What I'm certainly 100% right about, though, is that this thing is fucking heavy.

Well, new demos in February certainly get some attention !

May I say that I am with the people who didn't like the demo. I actually didn't like it at all. First of all it is completely derivative and it shows. Some mention the similarities to "Deities" (or other recent MFX/Kewlers demos), which is an excellent demo - true to form of ambience, with a killer soundtrack and beautiful visual effects. 828 has none of these qualities. There are things that we have seen before since the days of 'Liquid wen' (which I also didn't like much - Variform was ripped that year): Multiple of blended polygons rotating in phase with the odd 3D object textured by some perlin noise or something. No progression, no transition, no scope. Chimera (which was also compared to) AT LEAST had some progression and followed the 'less is more' in a manner I have never seen before or after that. Only black and red, yes, but you still wanted to see what will happen at the end. I don't want to see what happens at the end of 828 because I bet that it will be the first scene of the demo + some layers of low render-to-textured green distorted spikeballs on top; with the same loop of noise playing in the background.

Sorry for not liking this demo but this is my subjective opinion.

jobe's comment is 100% spot on with my own opinions on this prod. I can understand some people not liking this, but i for one love this unconditionally.. maybe its the vastness and alienness of it all and the knowledge of how much time and effort was put into this (the first time i saw a version of this demo was in july 2006 already)

One thing i'm very surprised are the myriad comments comparing this to some of our (mfx's) works. I fail to see any true connection (or ripping/copying as some people insinuate) even though this and some of our demos (deities, aether, golem) share some of the same themes.

Didn't need sleeping pills after watching this one.

It's probably like watching children's paintings vs. abstract art: You have to be a conaisseur to appreciate and acknowledge what sets the abstract painter apart from the playful child.

Ánd I prefer the plauful child, it seems...

I couldn't help but thinking: "What Bitarts film festival are Farbrausch planning to win some money at with this one?", hehe.

And, am I the only one who thought "Hey, Sony/Ericcson" when that green-ish ball appeared at the beginning? ;)
as a dark ambient demo, it's a good piece. really consistent in some places and not so consistent in others, but that's nothing new. i wasn't bored by it, but it walks on the balancing line between "dull" and "prefectly syncroniced. sometimes it has it's foot on one side of the line, sometimes on the other, but never "full on" of either.

i really fail to see how this demo could have managed to get all of pouet in heated debate. it's not "boring crap" as some say, and it isn't "the best demo ever" either.

For the technical side, it looks like we were in the 2000, what doesn't help much. I'm sorry, some people are as sensitive to the concept of a demo as much as I am to the technical quallity.

For the content, as far as I can interact with this demo, I feel I allready saw this many times in the past - nothing new.

I can understand some people likes it.

But I don't follow the "insane amount of content" joke.

Watched it for second time (this time at home) and I must admit it's not total bullshit, like I felt it was during the compo.

And now I have very mixed feeling about this one.
I the other hand it has dark atmoshpere, some twisted and innovative ideas, good soundtrack and at some points it's very well directed.
But then there are reasons why I think I won't be watching it ever again. I think it's too long and doesn't feel like it's going anywhere. In other words it's boring. Couldn't care less if "boring" is a creative comment or not, but during this demo I felt both entertained and bored at the same time.

Doesn't really deserve a piggie, but both thumb up and thumb down.

i watch films that have glitches around and poor visual quality, read comics on some cheap paper and like to listen to some old albums that aren't clean in all frequencies i can hear.

but i nevertheless enjoy them a lot, and i can see why some can't.

rulez added on the 2007-02-19 20:38:20 by evil evil
Some of the scenes were extremely beautiful, at least for a few seconds. But then there were other scenes that looked somewhat "let's put some 3d objects together and add a noise texture". But what kills this demo for me is that I utterly fail to see the concept. I only see random "dark" scenes put together that do not link well in my opinion.

This demo is far better than many things I voted as rulez. Still this demo did not work for me.

Yeah, okay... I'll just let that one fly for now. Or wait, no... shut up.

Far too many scenes are completely devoid of any clear direction, which apparently make it very easy for some to intepret a chasm of deeper meaning. If this was what Timo was aiming for, kudos to him. But people really ought to stop looking down their noses at whatever other people get from a nearly blank canvas.

A lot of the impact this demo obviously had was experienced with a big screen and a subwoofer the size of jumalauta's member list. CDC dispensers might want to take note of that.

I am not convinced. Some of the imagery is very good. Most is mediocre. Some is very poor.

I think perhaps on a big-screen with a powerful sound system this could have been very effective. I like experimentation on demos, and this one scores reasonably well on that front.

I also think that If there are ideas behind this work, they are poorly expressed. My harsher side leads me to believe the content of this demo is largely the result of a simplistic over indulgence in artistic intuition, mixed with the interpretation of "nearly structure" (on behalf of the audience as well as the creators).

Not crap, because it looks nice at parts, but that, imo, is all there is to it.

And where did you get the idea that that remark was broadly aimed at everyone who dislikes this prod? Taste is subjective, but when people start suggesting shallow intentions and questionable motivations based on their own tastes - as a few people have done here - I'm going to exercise my fucking right to feel better about myself.

And a lot of that impact was diminished by the use of alcohol. Just watched this at home yesterday. Worked even better. I've already decided where my next CDC is going, and it isn't this demo, but if I decide to change my mind, I bloody well am not going to listen to one word the "prod X only deserves Y CDC" police has to say.

It's true that alcohol makes democompos more enjoyable as an experience and heightens the social aspect, but still, in high quantities, it does decrease concentration, which I would say works in favour of immediately gratifying demos (Winnerdemo) against more atmosphere-based productions (828). Preferences differ, but still, many people I've spoke with think they'd get more out of this type of stuff at home in peace and rather see more "entertaining" stuff at compos.

Of course, I fully expect someone to say "whoa I just watched this while stoned" within 20 comments, utterly destroying my theory.

I believe Farbrausch can do better than this.

holy shit.

this is new. this is a big deal... a revolution.

i can understand how the audience responded with stunned silence. it's not minimal, or for that matter, thematic. there is content, but no message. it's not an "alternative" to any certain type of demo. it takes everything from the past several years of demos, puts it in a blender, and returns it in a totally new form. effects, 2d, 3d.. everything about demomaking is in fact here, just in a strange way.. and not noisy so it disturbs you, but slow and ambient so it draws you in. i haven't stared at my screen like that in a long time. believe it or not, not just anybody can pull off something like this. visualice, i salute you.

p.s. have a subwoofer.

p.p.s. for the record, i hated chimera, and i'm fine with most "mainstream" (whatever the hell that is, anymore) effect-centric demos.

I'm too lazy to search the forum, but I had issues running this on my new laptop. First, it seems to just give a black screen if I choose 16:10 aspect ratio, and secondly, if I enable 4x antialiasing, I get an error during loading (I have a screenshot of the error message at home, but it triggered in ../_start.cpp:2828 IIRC). It might be that 4x isn't supported on my gpu (GeForce go 7400 - I think it is though...), but shouldn't in that case the aa-mode be removed from the gui?
added on the 2007-02-22 16:22:01 by kusma kusma
the aspect ratio thingy is a stupid bug and will be fixed soon. the error you get with 4x antialiasing is "out of video memory" - has to do with too many rendertargets being allocated, and some of them rather late (yeah, stupid, i know). i'm working on it. sound issues are somewhat more mysterious (since we can't reproduce them on our machines), but we'll see what we can do.

it's very very cool. some scenes are really imaginative (especially from 2:00 to 5:00) and the music fits perfect.

what i disliked is that the demo as a whole is in the end just a concatenation of "weird" scenes - which itself wouldn't much of a problem if there weren't such a lot of them. less would've been more.

Ok, i agree with the above posters about visualice's skills, but...

- There is absolutely NO evolution in style from all the older haujobb demos. It's nothing more than a beautiful, but absolutely senseless show of 3d objects with layers above. No single good hand-coded effect, just again the artsy form of a boring 3d flyby - and no difference to art or mosaik or moments or whatever.

Still, well, despite of the marvellous work of the graphicians (nice to see that visualice is actually able to create a different picture than always the same again), i categorize this as "boring 3d keyframer", sorry. It doesn't do anything more than fly around static 3d scenes. And that's no art.

I love this prod. It's one of my favourite audio-visual works. But it's not a demo, and I can't judge it as a demo. It's not why I've been following the demoscene since I grew fond of those cracktros on my A500. As a demo, it gets a thumb down.

I'd elaborate on that, but I think most people here understand what I mean.

About the work itself...
When it managed to make that sphere near the beginning disappear without me noticing right away, I knew it was going to be something special.
I sat back and was mesmerised. Like with most abstract art, I'm not one of the people who tries to interpret things consciously, or pretends to know what they mean. Just let it enter your subconscious, and it will either evoke feelings or it wont.

This is not Another Haujobb Demo. A lot of the later Haujobb prods just left me cold, like sequels of a big movie franchise with no love. This one offers me something, and I know I'll be able to come back to it and feel it inside me again and again.

Shame it could probably be more powerful if the technical aspects of the graphics were less... 2002 ;P

Shit, I spend ages trying to kkapture this and only get a black screen, and now I find it's a bug if you choose 16:9!

Ryg: will you be adding more screen resolutions (i.e. 16:9/10 ones :) when you fix it? And will the video memory requirements come down a bit? Not important of course so long as the demo is still watchable, but would be nice. Also, I've not read through all the comments, but are the 'no music' comments referring to a bug, or lack of melody in the audio? No point testing for the latter.

What an intense atmo in this. Too bad it doesn't grow up to be resolved to a final point. My thought about demos is that they need to be entertaining, not just art. You can't simply eat 5 mn+ of moving images without a past, current, and final action. Without those rules, I am afraid it'd be enough to bore you to death.

But yeah, this is amazing work. Just love the visuals. Well done :)

Didn't like it.

You see, Farbrausch (This is also my opinion about what I've seen from CNS so far):

You guys aren't a bad group. You're not. Every production you produce is original and unique in its own way.

However.

Every producion you produce also uses the same ugly filters, overcompressed textures, and absolutely no "heart" factor.

I see your prods as empty animations. Where's half the demo spirit - CODE? Where's all the fun gone?

Keep making demos, but don't expect thumb-ups from me.
added on the 2007-03-10 04:50:05 by ferris ferris
i 100% concur with muh and Thygrion
"Every production you produce is original and unique in its own way."
yeah, because we take great pains to think of a new number for every single one of them!

"Every producion you produce also uses the same ugly filters, overcompressed textures, and absolutely no "heart" factor."
care to give a concrete example? because i honestly don't see how any of these three points applies to this demo.

"Where's half the demo spirit - CODE?"
uhm yeah, now i remember, we stopped writing code in 2001! i KNOW we forgot something!
added on the 2007-03-10 07:00:26 by ryg ryg
...to elaborate a bit: the way a lot of people are talking about this demo is extremely irritating to me. i can definitely understand why one would dislike this demo, or similarly why a lot of people just don't care for it.

i do NOT understand why there's so much discussion about purely technical aspects (like how it uses lowpoly models, uses no interesting shaders, is not effect-centric, etc). all of this is true, but it's also *completely* besides the point, because this demo is about as much about code as konsum, malpasset
and of spirits taken are.

we've done our fair share of completely code-centric and otherwise quite "soulless" productions (e.g. fr-08, candytron, kkrieger), to the point where not even us coders are really interested in it anymore.

to now see this demo, which is basically visualice pouring his soul out, called "heartless" and "empty" seems outright bizarre to me.

Ryg: you got my compliments! Some people are just to critical.

I hope FR never stop making prods. the day FR stops the demoscene died a little..

In anyway, discusions about productions have always been there. Ask Chaos about his WoC demo from 1992 which lost from Wicked Sensation by TRSI or the TP 1994 demo which was released unfinished. Sceners always have to discuss things alot without nuances.. Dont mind them and shut them up with the next great FR release.

p.s. Maybe Werkzeug needs to be updated for this to version 4 ? :)

In ayway cheers! and see you at bp07

Quote:
i do NOT understand why there's so much discussion about purely technical aspects

my two cents: farbrausch has been traditionally bipolar about demos/intros - either they had a strong emphasis on the technical side with little emotional factor (the product, poem to a horse, etc.), or have been completely dire technically but with a larger level of depth (konsum, malpasset, etc.) - this of course is due to the considerable number of people in fr and of course i guess the same attitude i have: hating to repeat myself in prods.

on the other hand, what this boils down to is that you will always have a divided audience because the demoscene itself is polarized the very same way your demos are (no wonder), and some people go crazy for the latest shader trickery while others prefer something minimal that just "feels" well.

in other words, you guys have been carefully avoiding the middle ground (and rightfully so), but it comes with a price.

ha! greets to Boznaj! what you would expect from those guys (Visualice + PS soundtrack) ? it is really not something you should criticize I suppose :) (only ryg will take critics to his heart because of his work on werkzueg 3) BTW greets to PS as well (you might not remember me.. but I do remember butterflies without wings).. I somehow have fun listening to noise a bit - apparently Bonzaj don't.. but well.. he has poor economical situation, you know.. he might not understand those little "perversive" pleasures that you apperently had during making of this thing...
of course I don't think it's beautiful.. and it was not the point, right ? so don't give you "rulez" sign.. whatever.. I did a little track for you: http://sphere.pl/~tomkh/sick3.mp3 <- in the same mood I guess (but Suboceanic-synth for all Suboceanic fans out there - yeah right :) )

BTW now the honest review (but mostly for people that think an obvious way): I had a feeling that sometimes it should be really worth to have more freedom to polish some details.. it is really visible that you were experimenting with it a lot.. did your best.. but encountered big limitations of the "form".. I believe that it might be a bit depressing for very sensitive artists.. maybe for you as well, from my experience: I usually use "pure forms" I mean.. the simplest form possible and always have a full control over details.. I think you don't achieved it here.. but otherwise a nice try :) (a software renderer? a return of simple pure code? I know Zilog - but it's not THIS as well.. you are on a good way maybe.. not that I'm that expert.. those are just my honest opinons what "should help" in future, the direction I would like to explore as well)

so yes.. I agree in Bonzaj that MFX demo was better from that point of view, although well.. c'mon - it was bad in other aspects... and crappily based on Matrix - duh - what were they thinking ? and also not polished enough... I'm sorry to say it: but well, I feel respect only to more serious artists that had great talents (and I don't feel like one of those, it's a long hard way, I'm not saying you can't achieve that).. although it is funny sometimes to watch those amateur crappy things and how people react emotionally at it - sort of like an artists school :)

Thwarted! Just saw the final link, and I have a nice 17" widescreen laptop with a decent GPU handy! Perfect! Gave it a quick go.. highest res, 4x AA, 16x10. And it was running perfectly, except that the video card refused to stretch the demo itself to fill the screen (the loading bar filled it, so I don't know why not? Or is it a bug?) and worse still, I couldn't see shit because some engineer at sony thought the monitor would look better with a reflective coating! I want to watch demos mr. sony, not my own face!

So, looks to be working well, except possibly the aspect ratio, which might or might not be down to the video card or driver. It's an x700 btw, no idea on the driver version.
added on the 2007-03-14 14:28:22 by psonice psonice
psionice, your display may be widescreen, but the demo is not (it's designed for 4:3). so if you view it on a widescreen display, you get black bars on the sides. this is completely intentional and the way it's supposed to work - the aspect ratio is there to make sure that squares stay square (so to say). it doesn't change the demo itself.
added on the 2007-03-14 15:11:28 by ryg ryg
Thanks ryg, makes sense now. Any plans to use wide displays properly in future prods btw? Seems they're becoming the standard now.
added on the 2007-03-14 16:27:20 by psonice psonice
we "use them properly" in prods that natively render in widescreen mode :) (fr-025 and fr-049 for example). same thing as with videos really - the content has a certain "design aspect ratio" and we just try to display things properly without unnecessary stretching.

something that i want to watch for the second time. seems like a attempt to create something what was not seen before. for me, 828 fails in gaining a deeper meaning of what is displayed. even if this has to be just a parade of moreless random scenes, ok, but then it has smaller basic value. seems like farbrausch doesn't have a problem in getting superb fx to our screens like puting them together into some worthy form. gonna see it again if i understand it (perhaps).

Mixed feelings about this...

It's not that I don't like it - even though I am a graphics whore. It's just that after I saw the demo, I looked around my lab... and everything felt so alien to me. I felt like an alien to my surroundings. It was a very strange experience for me... Near the end, I admit this very ominous feeling of impeding doom had almost grown...

I can't thumb it up just yet... Very strange demo, very experimental.

This is absolutely outstanding. I suppose it is one of – if not the – demo that comes really close to the very sense of the term “digital art” as it used outside the demoscene. I also immediately had Stanley Kubrick’s 2001/2010 in mind – clearly the sphere and the monolith are metaphors for the same thing. It seems to have this unbelievable amount of atmosphere, deepness, sense and meaning in every single frame and as in 2001/2010 you can feel that something important is happening – and since the you cannot immediately understand the meaning there is so much space to reflect and project your own emotions, feelings, fears and ideas into this space. Brilliant!

at first i hated it, but then noticed that 055 is a bit like listening to some of ulver's songs, it requires concentration. it's quite long but not too long to get bored. i love the design, but hate the fact that it's a bloatdemo. still, it's among the best ones i've seen and has the courage to be different and not fall into the usual clichées. it's easy to make a crappy annoying piece of shit-abstract noisedemo, but some how farbrausch has managed to avoid that in 055.

The merits of this production can be debated of course, but I think it's pretty obvious that it wasn't ever meant to be a sequel to fr-025 or have any other relation with it. The comparison is absurd and rather clueless.

Now, clearly there is a lot of work put into this. But it's not my cup of tea, and anyway it could be much better with a little care. There are very serious visual "bugs" which somewhat ruin the demo, and, face it, 75% is simply butt ugly.

This just popped up on the public's choice and it looks like I never thumbed it, so I just watched the fixed version.

Like the party version, I can't explain any of it, but when the busted android appeared with digitized ooze leaking out after all the build-up, it touched me.

Also there's something indescribably solid about that rolling ball at the start, the sound and visuals are so tightly coupled, it works really well.

If you can't draw your own conclusions or exercise your imagination, then it's your loss.

really, not my cup of tea.
perhaps my favourite "farbrausch" demo! i can feel deeper thoughts here... after watching it several times now, it is still interesting! all elements are connected to each other and make up a subconscious space of possible meanings (science mother, the planet, technology, hypertext sphere...).

it really uses the strengths of the main elements of demos in general to compose a dense composition, it is strong as a demo, not as movie, so to say. the direction is good, the chronology makes sense! and the soundscape feels tightly coupled to the main theme, amplifying it subtly.

noise sound (I don't think you can call it music) with nondescript clicks + stuff obscured by so many overlays you can barely see it + slow camera movement = atmosphere. It worked for me, apparently it's really that simple. But it just dragged on and dragged on and dragged on and it got really boring in the end.

And boy stuff was ugly. Lowpoly models, some very low-res textures, shadows so blocky they are hardly recognizable as such... Maybe acceptable for 64k's, but for a full-fledged demo, no, not at all. Makes me thumb it down.

Out of every demo I have seen thus far, this is absolutely 100% my favorite. Downright amazing. I probably blinked only 3 times during this, because I was so enthralled. As well, this has made me realize that there others out there who don't do just bright&shiny stuff but also dark, somber and creepy atmospheric stuff. Exactly the kind of flavor I so greatly want to produce.
