Great 3DS player, and great scenes, but... a "bit little" repetitive and boring. Watch it one time :)
added on the 2000-09-10 by epsilum
Another of my favourites demos. The unique 3dscene is really awesome (same quality as best commercial games), the music is very good...
lots of people hate this because it's too long, but i loooooooove it !
added on the 2000-09-10 by rez
it's too fucking looooong =) they should have cut it with a few mins.
added on the 2000-09-12 by _
Great work displayed here in modelling and texturing. But this demo is dead, dull. Not enough dynamic objects on the scenes (tho
when they appear, they are well animated. Minimal synchro, but synchro nevertheless, so it's a bit better than a bad 3ds player.
good spider part, even if the spiders are quite blocky.
added on the 2000-09-12 by _-_-__
The demo has just the right length, I like good demos/ intros/ ... but some are really short, this one has just the right length to get you in the mood and because it features different cam paths it does not get boring, not if you like it!

Splendid demo with very good visuals and a fitting mod. A must have!
added on the 2000-10-06 by ParaKnowYa
Elitgroup has no design. The 3D is ok, but the same scenes are looping during 10 minutes. It's really boring.

A must see! But it is write that the demo is too long ...A faster clone of Kasparov is Epidemic 2000 ... by Epidemic for Epidemic :> 'We are very Kewl' nYark!

when i watched this demo for the first time, i was really amazed by the quality of the 3d engine and of the visual artwork of this demo, but passed the 30 first seconds, i was always awaiting the rest of the demo, which appeared to be all the same during ten looooooooong and boriiiing minutes !!! worse than that, at a time, the music made a long 'tidiiiiiiiiii' during about 1 minute, that made me think that it had crashed my soundboard, i then pressed ESCape, erased the demo and never watched it again ...
added on the 2000-11-30 by flure
This is one of my prefered demo.
The engine is very, very good (only one 3d scene).
Themusic is very good. She is perhaps too long, but when you start show it, you can't stop.
(Bon je sais mon anglais est mauvais :)
added on the 2000-12-01 by jb
all euphoric guys out there: 3ds player isn't a demo. a little music syncing isn't design. expanding a demo which could be nice for 5 minutes THAT way is a fault and damn boring.
added on the 2000-12-05 by PigPen
I never saw such an overrated 'demo' before in my life, and I haven't even been able to watch it in full (thank god for the esc button)
added on the 2000-12-07 by Shifter
Excellent work of gfxist and coders(goes fast in a p200 !:D), but my god, it's very boring to see it for more than one time
added on the 2001-01-01 by r3D^rgba
Damn, the work have been made by elite members of an elite group. The code was made by Chaos, that guy is not a little boy, the 3d engine is powerfull, the best clipping ever made for a demo, try the '-s edit' option.
And, now all the elitegroup is reformed in farb-rausch,...
Don't say it's an overrated demo. That demo is very good. Respect !
added on the 2001-01-14 by Sanx
good textures, good scenes, good player BUT no design, no fun, no interest, no feyframe, no demo, just a game-intro like ... just for quakers
added on the 2001-02-12 by Zone (leZone)
And all of you out there who appreciate design only when it's written in big, flashin finnish, additive blended letters:

Turn your light off, turn your stereo up, sit still and WATCH. It may be not the best demo ever created, and well, if you have a very narrow view of design and music, it may suck, but it's main purpose is to create an athmosphere, and it definitely succeeds in doing so. Everything fits, and the design is consistent as hell.

Just remind that "fuck demos, let's art" may also mean things like this, ok? :)
added on the 2001-03-06 by kb_
You rule! I want code godamn! =)

I know about boring and too long,. but still I like it..
It's not the demo i would watch everyday, but i like it because of technical stuff!
Great and very well detailed 3d modells!
added on the 2001-03-08 by Optimus Knight
Hey kb, I thought it _was_ supposed to be the best demo ever created! ;)

This is pretty much an "industrial" demo, so you'll want to have a taste for that type of music to enjoy it. I do. Very much. :) But if you don't, go watch your sissy Fall Equals Winter poetry-demos or your Japan-pop INF demos, I don't mind. It should be watched in darkness on a large monitor. If you're annoyed by the buzzing at the end, then the demo didn't have the proper effect on you. Final thought, don't focus on the textures, or even the objects. Focus on the motion. Trust me on that one.
added on the 2001-03-08 by phoenix
still looks like some kind of industrial-park-study and not like an demo (demo=fast, fun and NOT-sleeping ;)).
added on the 2001-03-31 by syntiq
if we could view the 3d scene on our own, it is much nicer! (1% joke)
added on the 2001-04-04 by crs
well, seriously..<br>
anybody: don't you think there's needed a bit more than to model a scene and let it play? does it cover everything the demoscene is about?
added on the 2001-04-13 by crs
kasparov is nice.
added on the 2001-04-21 by ps
This has got to be my favorite demo thus far... completely awe-inspiring. Though it doesn't really reflect much demoscene tradition, it is still a tight production, by any standards.
added on the 2001-04-22 by rayro
Afterthought: I toured the Hamburg industrial-harbor area at night with a couple FR guys, after MS01. I then understood where they got the inspiration for this demo :). Cranes, tunnels, and iron girders everywhere. Even the music crept into my head. :)
added on the 2001-04-30 by phoenix
Great demo, kickass music, perfect synchro. One of my favourite demos. Fantastic world, psychedelic "like on LSD" camera movements and cuts, fantastic ligtning. YES, ELITE GROUP YOU ARE VERY GOOD, BUT STAND UP YOU LAZY ASSES AND MAKE A "KASPAROV 2" (in Hamburg on the LSD again :))
added on the 2001-05-10 by Trauma Zero
ok, so it's not too good as a *demo*, but if you just look and listen to it, it's perfect!
just the correct atmosphere, great graphics, great music .. everything fits and it really works.
why did the world remind me of half-life? ;)
added on the 2001-05-19 by ld0d
I think this is the best demo ever made... ever! The music, graphics and cameramovments speaks exact the same language.
PERFECT!

And it's NOT too long or boring as some idiots think. arrrgh!

The best demosong i have ever heard!!! SLAM IT, BITCH! Yeaaah....
(psikorp love it!)
added on the 2001-05-29 by H-Ecs
argh! the music is killing me! not exactly ronny's best piece in my opinion, although music is very individual...

kasparov rulez. point.
added on the 2001-06-11 by bhead
Canonball: sorry, but kasparov was not produced in hamburg, but in denmark :)

anyway, kasparov rocks. and, although many will deny it, definitely one of the more influential demos for the scene.
added on the 2001-06-17 by ryg
I've seen Kasparov twice and I'm not sure if I want to see it again. Last time I saw it, I had a terrible nightmare the night after. Coincidence? I don't know.

I still can't help liking it somewhat. It reminds me of some depressing, scifi-novelish antiutopia. And the antroids are kind of cute. :>

But it's not a demo. It's a movie, it's an athmosphere. Though Huxley and Orwell didn't have wireframes. ;>

P.S. It definitely is way too long.
added on the 2001-06-24 by DiamonDie
kasparov is very good. not boring, no lack of design, just great work and fucking good atmosphere.
added on the 2001-07-23 by chewbacca
if the creators had shortened it down, to let's say half the length, it would have had a much greater impact, because the density of the camera movements as well as the effects (mblur, wireframe blending) would strike the viewer even more. i have to admit that i watched it quite often when it was new, but when i'm looking back now, it seems rather boring and not-so-sceneish, if you can say that. kasparov was probably the first and last pure 3d demo i liked.
added on the 2001-07-24 by robotriot
at first i didn't like it. then the more i watch it, the better it gets...

yes, even the music is good ;)
(nectarine rules btw ;)
added on the 2001-08-07 by ileaardbei
I guess I should dislike this demo for being a really lengthy 3d-scene player, but I don't.

Watching this demo with the right state of mind just takes you there.
added on the 2001-08-08 by cloaked
nice but boring
i guess graphicians have worked hard on this prod...
the 3d is perfect, but where is the interest ?
why this demo is so long ?
i think this is just a coder wanking demo...
playing quake3 should be more interesting...

Soz if I'm bitching everybody but I've *never* managed to see *any* elitegroup prod. Kasparov dies with an exception before even getting into the gfx mode... what gives? (win2k here, gf2mx, lotsa memory etc.)
added on the 2001-10-07 by mot
the final doesnt work .. i just watched it again.. a few years since tp99 and ive still not seen many demos that can compete with this graphicians.. maybee some fr production.. but thats no point;)

however.. the party version worked...

Kasparov is very good.
What I like about it is the music-sync, like the camera shaking or blurring to the beats of the music, or the "crash-part", when the camera simply goes on a traight line and hits the wall.
Great job. Elitegroup, you are very good.
added on the 2001-11-07 by Gargaj
This demo is very well design, coded, and everything, but I still feels it's a bit on the too long, too boring side of the force. And I don't like the music one bit.

Having said that, it's still rather impressive.
added on the 2001-11-15 by thom
Wonderful semi-gritty industrial feel to it. Great job.

Notable for: modeling, lighting, code, camerawork (yes, definitely "coder" style, not cinematic, but you really showed off everything you could!), effects, speed, smoothness, textures, detail, sync, physics, animation, and overall look and feel. Even if it is just a sceneplayer. :)

PS, I really liked that swarm of little bug things... they were ingenious in how they walked around like that. Very cool. More of them would have been nice :)
added on the 2001-11-19 by LaserBeams
A breathtaking feat of coding that has pushed 3d engines to an unreachable level, in terms of both speed and depth.

The cold and gritty atmosphere is tremendous too (especially when listening to it through headphones).

Sure, it's long and repetetive, but that's the theme of the demo, and that's what makes it so unsettling.
added on the 2001-11-29 by Wade^Hjb
What could someone write about THAT demo?

Seeing is believing. It's Number 1. Simply the best demo ever. A Masterpiece. Binary art. It's hot. It's cold. It's fast. It's slow. It's like riding the rollercoaster... nacked. And sometimes it is just goddamned ILL and INSANE!

Well... it's KASPAROV!

Everything is under control. ;)

added on the 2001-12-08 by Nezbie
everybody's shitting about "nice engine nice this nice that".. but the whole piece is just brilliant. not just the code, or the modelling.. think about the thrilling camerawork, or the well fitting soundtrack.

among the best i've ever seen

Just Down Right EXCELLENT!!!!

Your more than very good Designers.
added on the 2002-01-09 by Mike 3D
Yes it is long, almost as long as the lovely pipes. Strong sychronisation twixt image and sound - if you live long enough, see and hear it twice. Watch it once, no one will care too much if you press esc.
added on the 2002-02-13 by Zzed
not long, not boring, simply just perfect! :)
added on the 2002-02-13 by rydi
Mhmm, ok...

Then you watch this one for the first time, you can only be disapointed. After all this hype, you somehow expect more than just some nice camera moves and some industrial flavour. I mean, it starts promising, but while watching it for the first few minutes, you are waiting for some mindblasting climax that is not coming... only the same scene(s), over and over again...

Still, it's getting better every time you watch it. Once you KNOW about the little 'content', you can concentrate on the atmosphere. And yes, it definitely creates a great atmosphere (atmos-fear? ;)).

The distorted ending seems to be inspired by the hplus one.

However, all elitegroup/smash designs/farbrausch trademarks are here: Perfectly fitting soundtrack and syncs and textures and no real design. :)

p.s. ...those spiders really look like walking matchboxes. ;)
added on the 2002-02-14 by tomaes

an amazing 3d demo kasparov is. sync is a bit strange in places, also the spider-robots wasnt the thing to add atmosphere with, but all in all - the best 3d flyby i've seem.

added on the 2002-02-22 by raver
the 3 minutes at the beginning are probably the best atmospheric crescendo ever...
added on the 2002-03-17 by karnof
Hail to the master! This is un-fucking-believably good. Perfect atmosphere, perfect music, perfect whatever.
You might call this as lack of design, but i think this is DE-fucking-SIGN whith all capital.

added on the 2002-03-21 by ps
yeah.. same problem in win2k for me.. the party versions run but the final version justs exits promptly after (tried?) to set resolution and other silly stuff..
added on the 2002-03-21 by Hatikvah
Is that the problem? I can't get it working in XP, and I could never get this working in win98 either.
added on the 2002-03-21 by bigcheese
ok.. that's not quite true. It did work once in win98 :) maybe I've just been running xp for longer than I thought.
added on the 2002-03-21 by bigcheese
OK, sorry I spoke too soon and didn't read everything above. Yes, the party version works for me. Try to find e_kasp on ojuice and you can get it.

It still hung at the end of the demo, and when I manually aborted there was an error log full of errors, but that's a lot better than nothing :)
added on the 2002-03-21 by bigcheese

added on the 2002-04-27 by mot
Awesome, the final version now works!! It's a good time to vote for it.

Kasparov is still an amazing production, it just doesn't age. Brilliant visuals (great camera work) that blend perfectly with the fantastic and moody tune.

It's very long, but somehow when I'm watching the demo, I forget about time...

kasparov is not a demo, it's a religion.
it's not music, it's an hymn.
it's not graphic, it's brutal fresco.
it's not 3D fly-by, it's all about smooth grace and smart movement.
it's...kasparov.

(ok guys, how much did i get paid to make such propaganda? :-)
added on the 2002-06-15 by karnof
truely the best of the 3dflybye genre..

very great graphical+musical work. probably some 3d movements were a bit too simple, especially towards the end.. but overall quite nice if you followed it from the beginning..

well but that's actually only a 3d engine from the code side ..
added on the 2002-07-08 by florent
the textures. the models. the music. the camera. the synch. the special effects (few, but perfectly used). the atmosphere. the perspective changes. the engine (it's not in the way, and you can't say that about every engine). the concept. the everything.

i'm amazed.

i would have liked a little more action besides camera movements... but then again, this demo isn't boring at all.
added on the 2002-07-24 by jazzman

Technically I do not think there is much to say. It's fast, models and textures are detailed, good animation engine, demo effects (particles, watter) are incorporated into the 3d world... ok.
But for me it's not a demo.
It more looks like the beggining of half life game, but presented in a very long and boring way.

it's pretty alright... but waaaaay to longwinded and slowmoving. the music isn't all that good either. i remember i was impressed when i watched it (the engine, the textures, the lighting, the animation (well..)), but when i downloaded it again some time later to watch it again i completely forgot why.. it's just too damn boring and repetitive, no matter what stoned dutch people say. :)

Coup de coeur for Kasparov? I always thought that this is for underestimated and less known prods?

One of the most hyped demos. I didn't liked the Elitegroup behaviour at any time, but technically it's indeed an amazing demo. Clean scenes, perfect sync and the sound fits to the scenes. Clearly a pre-Farbrausch production. Probably a show off to the gamers at TP 9 which had to notice that also the scene 'can do it'.

But as with all tech demos it doesn't work for the long running time, after a few minutes it gets hell boring. Technically remarkable, but for the atmosphere there are several better demos out there.
added on the 2003-01-05 by Crest
oh god no, what next? adrenalin for coup de coeur ?

ofcourse there's lots of good work in this demo and blah and blahblahblah. but why????
added on the 2003-01-05 by droid
this was the first demo, in my opinion, to create ambience and plot consistence,(not the usual plasmas, tunels, rotozoom, greets, plasmas) while watching it I personally get caught on the visuals, and the sensation of being inmersed on the story rises on every minute. Great ! that deserved a Wolrd Domination as they claimed on the dentros!
added on the 2003-01-05 by JaK
crest: i rather think this demo is extremely underrated. it certainly got a lot of attention, but most of that was really extremely shallow - the 3d engine and the modelling got most attention, and while both are decent and well-produced, they're really the most uninteresting point about the demo (IMHO).

what makes kasparov great is the incredible attention to detail, the camerawork (which is still about the best to be seen in any demo), the music, and how well everything in this demo interacts with everything else to build up the atmosphere. there's not a single thing about this demo that feels "out of place" - which is very rare in demos.

fun thing is that while most people were "impressed by the 3d-engine", this is really codewise the least interesting part of the demo. the movement of the spiders (both in the heightfield and in the "pipe repair" scene) is completely ai-controlled, and even more important, this was the first demo to use render-to-texture effects, which are only getting common now, about 3 years after the demo was released.

the problem this demo really has is its choice of aesthetics - the gritty, cold, dead industrial atmosphere has been pulled off incredibly well, but it seems like for most people this style simply doesn't work. (that kind of people then usually screams "boring 3d flyby").

in any case, if you want to judge it in retrospect, look at the influence it had on other demos. not only the number of kasparov parodies and references in other demos (how many demos do you know that have parodies AT ALL?), but also certain style elements you find in several demos since (count the number of pipes in demos before and after kasparov; compare the camerawork in demos before and after kasparov; et cetera).

i'm relatively happy that kasparov is now coup the coeur - because i think that now, after all the elitegroup "we are very good"-we-want-to-piss-you-off-influence is over :), this demo finally has the chance of getting halfways objective judgment.

oh, and i'm style pissed off by the "farbrausch=elitegroup" stuff. the key people involved in this demo only joined farbrausch long after the group was established, about 50% of the active members in farbrausch (like gizmo, cp, wayfinder, rawstyle, and me) never were involved in any way with elitegroup, and farbrausch has a philosophy that is absolutely contrary to what elitegroup was :)

added on the 2003-01-05 by tomaes
well, "coup de couer" means (thought not quite literally) "hits you in the heart" ... and this almost did it for me.. it's a great, very fast 3d engine, the scene is huge and beautifully detailed, the spiders are nice, i liked the double imaging and the wireframes and the blur, etc.. there's also something of an implied narrative that suits the "emptiness" of the scene.. i didn't have any trouble staying awake through the 10 minutes.. on the other hand, it *does* sort of look like a game intro, but i've yet to see any games with as artistic a sense for the camera or as decent synchro (both in timing and mood).. it's a 3d flyby demo, something i don't usually like, but artistically, it's the peak of what can be achieved in that style so it deserves much respect..
added on the 2003-01-05 by dyscotopia
Thx for the translation. =) Well Kasparov didn't hit me in the heart, but still I like it very much. It's still a little bit Empty, yes. Could use a lot more typography and borders and stuff. But very nice scenes. =) I like rusty Industrial scenes. :D

added on the 2003-01-05 by LHS
The special thing about the camerawork is that Kasparov is just full of it. And it's very carefully done too, synced perfectly to the music. I especially liked the parts where the rig is turned into its wireframe.

Whether you like it or not, this demo managed to create great controversy like the Product/Farbrausch, Dope/Complex and yes, Chimera/Halcyon. For that fact alone it is a worthy "coup de coeur".

i've seen it on the bigscreen when presented at the party. it definiteley rocks; great atmosphere, but slightly too long. the problem with this production is that the dramatic effect decreases more and more as the screen size used for replay becomes smaller. oh, btw, a lot of people claim this one (and ".das .produkt" as well) as "gamer style". i think such an argument is completeley pointless; in fact, the scenes and textures might look somewhat 3d-shooterish, but how can music be gamish (if it's not the super-mario-theme or an actual game theme) ?!

well, i suggest you meant that those "arrogant" lines were meant ironically... i thought about that, too, but if they were meant like this, it would mean that elitegroup basically thought their demo wasn't good, and that thought just seemed absurd to me, because like i said i thought (thought again...) it was quite well done... oh well, fuck it, i wasn't right.

Seeing the name of the group, the annoying handles of the members, and the series of arrogant intros released before the party, I was itching to put the boot in upon seeing this demo. And then I did. And I realized that the absolute worst part about the whole thing is that Kasparov is utterly, completely brilliant. Fabulous atmpspheric music synced perfectly with gorgeous, stark yet lush 3D scenes with brief bursts of blurs and distortions that personally remind me an awful lot of the greetings part in Wayfarer (but that is beside the point). I didn't want to like this demo. But I had to. Damn you, Elitegroup. The glowing fluid in the tanks was particularly nice.

I had a problem with my Radeon at first, too. But there should be a link to some kind of update here. A resolution selector and "enable anisotropic filtering" option would be nice, btw...

About the demo design (since there are enough remarks about the technical aspect):
Basically I see 9 parts: (1)intro/(2)fly-by/(3)acceleration/(4)break/(5)credits/(6)restart/(7)acceleratio n+fx/(8)"error"/(9)final fly. Kasparov is clearly very well thought up, but: Part 6 is most likely the one which causes the "bad design" comments, since there is not enough new stuff to make it interesting. It gets somewhat more interesting again in part 7 and 8, but part 9 could be much more effective - and thereby shape the overall impression - if those parts(6,7 and 8), as well as part 2 and 3 were shorter. Instead, part 4 should be a bit longer as it has many unique and very interesting scenes with an excellent soundtrack. The animation of the spiders in part 2 synchronized with the beat is a good effect but it would be more effective if that synchronized drum-instrument would start together with this scene. Furthermore, since there are no other animated scenes outside part 4, it falls out of place.
The music generally fits very well to this 9-parts concept, and enforces the good as well as the bad sides of Kasparov's design.

Seems like today all you need to make a demo is a 3D model, some music and a camera path that is synced to the music. boring, over-rated, partly ugly, annoying music and fly-by shit...

not a favourite of mine, but worth a thumb

I forgot the name of that great prod, but on scene.org they helped me getting a clue :) I highly recommend watching this piece of 3D-art. It's long, yep, but it's worth it. At least it was '99. Thumbs up!

Can't believe I haven't thumbed this up! Incredible fly by that was visually way ahead of it's time, so damn fast and required very basic hardware!

Sure it is repetetive, but it has more atmosphere than most demos I've seen!

An insult to the acception of images and cinematic itself, and to art in a more general way ! This is just anything and anything, and anything, during 30 minutes. The result of years of dereliction brought and put in your heads by MTV polution. TOTAL PUKANCE ! No, demo are not cool if you add senseless stupid camera movements.
added on the 2006-06-21 by krabob
and lux aeterna luceat eis by ephidrena, is for me a perfect antithesys of this demo.

Amazing experience!

I didn't know looking at rusty pipes for so long would be interesting.

You actually watch the scenes so long (without getting boring) you start to feel involvement.

Normally when I see some random rotating landscape I won't feel a thing, here however I actually start feeling the camera movements.
added on the 2006-07-10 by Joop
it's good. i loved the camera shaking with the music in this one.

Some might say this is too long, but if you're in the right mood, this can be hypnotizing (some might call it falling asleep) :).

Can't believe I haven't given this demo a well-deserved thumb up. This is a classic, possibly the finest "3D flyby demo" ever.
It is a bit on the long side, but fortunately there are some nices breaks (ants, robots, water room etc.) from the industrial static scenes that keeps it going.
Still, the probably greatest thing of this demo is the outstanding quality of both code and modelling/texturing.

Oh my, haven't commented yet??? I think I've watched this roundabout a hundred times since it was released...

Anyway, this came at a time when every other accelerated demo looked like CRAP. You can clearly see that this one was way ahead of it's time because 2-3 years later, most of the other accelerated demos STILL looked like crap. Every effing demo in 2001/02 had those rotating transparent textures and golden spikey-blobb-thingies a la Tesla/Sunflower or any Damage demo that comes to mind... and those demos BORED ME TO DEATH.

But Kasparov showed the way to the future: perfect camera work, highres textures (for that time), modelling work way beyond the typical "lets put three cubes on the screen", a soundtrack that doesn't consist of the typical "Umtah-umtahtah" of that period and an actual concept and theme. It was breathtaking back then and is still standing strong.
Sorry, but everyone who can't see those achievements and thinks this is a "boring fly-by" should go and see a doctor/optician...

damn, where's my thumb for this materpiece?
added on the 2007-09-08 by substrate
It would appear as if this is either a love- or a hate-production.
However, I don't neither love nor hate it - it's somewhere in between, leaning towards to hate-side.
I mean, it has potential and, yes, it was probably quite good "back then", but I fail to see how people could be THAT impressed with this one? Why has NO ONE called this "Boring 3D fly-by shit"?
The music has its beats here and there, but overall it's just plain boring, I think.
