Hmm hatari crops the bottom even with "hatari_video_crop_overscan=false"
48 colours per scanline ... would have made for great intros but probably little use for realtime game execution given the limits of th shifter + cpu/bus

The only issue:
The lower scroller could have NEG'ed its colors to make it easier to read (on brighter gfx areas).

No it couldn't :) The machine is fully busy updating the image colours (48 per scanline), no cycles to update the scroller colours.
