I'm being told the kiosk was never set up.

So, here it is. Before the party is over, so you can try it out anyway.

Videos can be downloaded here. Selecting a video in the kiosk that you haven't downloaded will result in a black screen. Put them in the video folder, no need to download them all [try 1.mp4 then click on panic room if you just want to see the kiosk in action, just don't click on any other videos].

Have fun.

Also: Sorry for the freaking huge size. More updates and fixes later...

What's this "kiosk" all about?

kudos for the effort!

Woah! That's nice. It's not only an amazing demopack but also kind of "demotool" cause you can create your own demokiosk to show demoscene to your friends or just organize captures of your favorite demos in a nice GUI. Great work! :)

Aww, they didn't set it up? That's a shame mate! Especially after all the work you put in!

From now on, every demo party should have a kiosk, just because!

nice stuff!

okkie: yeah, why not, we could just plunge this on our public compovoting boxes so partyvisitors who don't update gfx cards every 6 months can see some recent pc demos too... :)

Great concept. It's a shame it didn't go ahead.

that was probably bad karma flowing back to you for not having replaced media error with 828 ;)
good effort with the interface anyways

paniq - Well, technically it could. :) I'll see if I can get a version for ya together that will. ;) If only my linux rig wasn't toasted. :(

paniq, micksam: But linux implementation of flash is so terribly slow that I doubt it will run at any decent speed anyway. :(

The kiosk does seem to work decently on the stand-alone version of flash on linux. [through VM even]

Simply grab the flash standalone player, extract flashplayer from the standalone/release tar inside that tar [yay double tared]. Grab the swf-only zip and put it in there as well. [You still need the main download though, since that includes thumbnails and info]

Then simply allow execute permissions on flashplayer's binary, and run ./flashplayer capped.swf

Runs fine on kubuntu through VM [though video plays slow, it's somewhat acceptable at least].

And make sure to get the linux version on that page [it isn't marked too well]. I think a similar method can be used for Mac OS as well, but no Mac here to try it on. :)

Awesome work!

I think setting this up in the lobby when Notacon/Blockparty rolls around would be great!

There are about six internet kiosks next to the nvscene room which would be absolutely perfect for micksam's demo kiosk.. but, a) I don't think any of us knew about them in advance, and b) we would had to have arranged something far in advance if we wanted to be able to use them. So, oops.

Thumb up will come after I check it out. :)

Just so you all know: I'll be getting some videos up that are slightly lower quality, but will run better on slower machines. Give me a week or so to upload though.

must have been frustrating to hear that it wasn't set up at Nvscene. Was there any explanation for it? It better be a good one. Did it lack silly amounts of green colour?

My hat goes off to you for all the work you put into this.
rulez added on the 2008-09-08 13:50:45 by Axel Axel
Very, very excellent indeed. I am so sorry we could not put it up at NVScene. :(

Axel: The reason was simple - we couldn't leave a machine without supervision outside of the area. There was no touchscreen monitor either, so it would have had to have it's own mouse and such. Also, there were no speakers in the plasma monitors there. :(

It was linked to and talked about at NVScene though, so I really hope other parties can take advantage of the massive amount of work micksam7 put into this.
rulez added on the 2008-09-08 14:02:22 by gloom gloom
also, notably, the videos required a more muscular pc to run than the intros themselves.
added on the 2008-09-08 14:16:38 by Gargaj Gargaj
does this work with an arbitrary number of demos as well?
added on the 2008-09-16 20:02:14 by Gargaj Gargaj
Awesome effort! Too bad this wasn't shown at NVScene.

this is not a demo kiosk but just a video kiosk... thus, piggy.
