Wow, this is a really cool effect actually. Writes to the PPU colour emphasis bits are timed (by some combination of MMC5 IRQ and NOPs) so that the display is brightened by two levels in a circular area around the firefly. No sprite or tilemap tricks necessary. I have to wonder how many emulators were even able to display this correctly in 2004...
