Cool, nice tool.

Fantastic idea! It would be nice to have a centralized store where you can register your adf for download so that it's easier to find them!

WebDiskWriter is a tool with ridiculously small memory and CPU
requirements that allows you to write disk images directly from
the internet via HTTP to disks on your Amiga.

Crazy but very COOL idea!

A tool for proper demoshows!

GadTools thumb
rulez added on the 2021-02-25 19:16:20 by grip grip
Yes it's gadtools, but font sensitive nevertheless. :-)
There's always the latest version at http://home.sm41.de/tek/tools/webdiskwriter.lha.

My thumb was sincere and I can tell from the screenshot(s) that it's font sensitive. It's nice to see a program that follows the guidelines! I personally stopped fiddling with TP cables and PCMCIA NIC:s when wifi became the norm and I purchased a CF->PCMCIA adapter, but this is a very cool tool and idea nonetheless and the proper GUI is a bonus.
added on the 2021-02-25 19:30:54 by grip grip
And I stopped using Compact Flash adapters and such. I would never go back to NOT using network. :-)

Version 0.5 now supports Pouet and Aminet searches.

Absolutely great idea!! I look forward to trying it with my A1200 and the WIFI PCMCIA WPA2/AES card :)

Can it handle DMS files, too?
added on the 2021-02-27 06:42:51 by grip grip
DMS, not (yet). I always hated this format, so I'm not really enthusiastic about adding support for it...
added on the 2021-02-27 06:49:38 by bifat bifat
I'm still using DMS out of habit but I'll try to remember putting any future release in ADF format in order to support this tool (and, apparently, Gotek drives).
added on the 2021-02-27 12:03:58 by grip grip
grip: I know the feeling. DMS has a nice GUI frontend on Amiga, so I'm usually providing both ADF and DMS images in final versions.

As for the tool: thumb up for its own crazy cool sake of course

A large number of new features is in the works. No answer from Demozoo. Contacted Exotica for access to a huge data corpus of Amiga productions. Current screenshot:

We tested at Rabenauge HQ yesterday on an A600 and Kick2.x. We watched demos per projector and OSSC from network and disks for hours...

This looks awesome.
Tried it now on the real thing, but it gives me an error.
Also can't get a dir on pouet and aminet.

First check network connectivity and name resolution:

# ping home.sm41.de
PING smhome.dyn.schulze-mueller.net (85.212.129.82): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 85.212.129.82: icmp_seq=0 ttl=56 time=52.622 ms

You can start the tool in commandline mode:

# webdiskwriter verbose get http://home.sm41.de/tek/tools/webdiskwriter.lha
Requesting: http://home.sm41.de/tek/tools/webdiskwriter.lha
Content type: application/octet-stream

Current version is now 0.72, btw. We're now searching a funkier name for the program, current favourites are "Lubricator" or "Smøremiddel".
added on the 2021-03-02 12:57:35 by bifat bifat
Connection is fine, ping is working and browsing via iBrowse.
I'm pasting the above command and:

Cannot initiate request
Error saving file.

I see little that could explain this. Are you perhaps running a bsdsocket.library < v4? e.g. in my case it says
# version bsdsocket.library
bsdsocket.library 4.332
I'm requesting library version >= 4. I didn't check if version 3 would do. Feel free to contact we at bifat et neoscientists piste org. You could for example test with a debug version of httpclient.library.

Webdiskwriter has been renamed to 'Lubricator'.

Version 0.79 now supports rudimentary HTML parsing, so you can enter regular websites with file listings, follow the links, and download stuff to disks or HD. Special index files are still supported, but no longer strictly needed.

The requirement for bsdsocket.library has been lowered to version 3, so it can now be used with the freely downloadable TCP/IP stack AmiTCPv3 on Aminet.

Read all about it here:

Great idea, I will surely use it! Thanks Bifat! =)

Version 0.80 now supports unpacking lha, zip, and dms, so you rarely need a command prompt or anything else than Lubricator anymore.

Is Lubricator name safe for kids =|.
Just joking ;).
added on the 2021-03-13 00:28:24 by sim sim
Totally safe for children - enter 'lubricator' in your favourite image search! (Compare that with 'lubricant'.)
added on the 2021-03-13 00:32:22 by bifat bifat
Version 0.83 brings you faster async disk writing, "Unarchive" being the default action for archive downloads, some changes in the GUI layout, and many minor fixes. Also, the search proxy has been improved to yield many more working links by rewriting URLs, especially from Pouet. ADF and DMS files from Aminet work now, too.
added on the 2021-03-18 11:22:45 by bifat bifat
Great!
rulez added on the 2021-03-18 12:59:04 by Soundy Soundy
v0.85 supports downloading from https and ftp, so all downloads of adf, dms, lha, zip and plain Amiga executables should work now.
The DMS unpacker is now integrated, faster, and requires less memory. The extermal DMS program is no longer needed, resulting in a smaller overall package.
The planned feature set is now largely complete. Watch out for a 1.0 release on Aminet some time in the future.

Version 1.0 released; should show up on Aminet shortly.
Changes since 0.85:

1.0 - Improved documentation, some minor bugs fixed
0.93 - Added bookmarks menu; fixed possible illegal memory access during tooltype parsing; improved filetype and html content detection; link texts are now shortened if necessary; passing an URL in the commandline works (again)
0.92 - Fixed crash when clicking 'Cancel' on unpacking DMS to disk; reduced memory consumption; improved path handling, improved error reporting; file downloads can be aborted
0.91 - Added Iconify function; added NUMLINES and NOAGA tooltypes, removed NOASYNC tooltype
0.90 - Bugfix in devicename handling; reduced memory consumption; cleanup
0.89 - Added 'suggest random demos' function; DMS unpacker in 'heavy' mode slightly optimized in assembler
0.88 - Added CREATEICONS tooltype; DMS unpacker optimized in assembler a bit; some fixes and cleanup
0.87 - DMS archives can now be unpacked directly from HTTP to disk, without downloading before. httpclient.library updated to v3.0.
0.86 - Added a function to create a bootable disk for running an executable
added on the 2021-04-02 09:08:49 by bifat bifat
Such a great tool!
I've already used many of the features.

Updated:

1.2 - Corrected handling of URI paths without trailing slashes; dramatically improved compatibility when running executables, especially from disk; running executables and making bootable disks from executables with spaces in their filenames corrected; now always remembers last directory in file requesters; now correctly reports disk errors on read/write/download disk images
added on the 2023-05-24 18:22:06 by bifat bifat
Lubricator 2.0 is out and packed with new features so crazy you can't shake a stick at it - such as recent uploads to Pouet and Aminet, packdisk maker, local filebrowser and fileviewer, unlimited expandability. You can add your own search facilities and create your own proxies now.
We were having a live talk and presentation about it at Pågadata.
