The Paranoia Error in Line 99 party release.

1. - What is it ?
_----_-----------

This is a real 24h game by Paranoia, we started development including code,
graphics and music on Saturday afternoon and finished it on Monday
afternoon.
I hear you saying that those aren't 24h ... I totally agree, but at a party
like the EIL'99, there are TOO many people to talk to, too many knowledge to
gather, too many new people to get to know, too many demos to look, too many
musics to hear and too many compos to watch.

So actually, we have been interrupted quite often ...
But we LOVED THAT !!!
Yes, Error in Line surely was a great party, what a pity that it's over now.

Anyway, since this is the 24h version of this game - or rather - the
EIL'99 PreRelease, it is a bit limited, but the game itself works.

2. - What kind of game ?
_----_------------------

Reverse Pong is like driving backwards while looking forward.
Or driving forward while looking backward.
Or the other way round.
Or both.
Nevertheless, it's just Pong with a minor adjustment.

3. - Intro and Menu
_----_---------_---

The game starts with a silly little intro, press space to skip it.
The menu displays a logo, plays some music by Luebke and offers you
to
F1 - Game style
F2 - Difficulty
F3 - Game mode
F4 - Start
F10 - Leave game

F1 lets you change between several styles, classic, new-school and crazy.
Unfortunately, we only included the classic look, so forget this selection.

F2 lets you switch between 3 different pad-sizes, large (easy), medium
(medium) and small (hard). The larger the pad is the higher is the
probability that you actually hit the ball

F3 is supposed to let you switch between game modes.
It's for future-plugins even we have no idea of yet, but we thought it
would be wise to include this option anyway.
Guess what, it's disabled in the EIL'99 PreRelease. :-)

F4 actually starts the game.

4. - The game itself
_----_--------------

Well, if you don't know Pong, you better go see a psychiatrist because you
obviously have lost all your childhood-memory.
It's PONG !!!
The only difference to the original Pong is that you
- are supposed to be playing it alone
- can only use the mouse to control your pad
- can only move the pad the ball is moving FROM, not TO.

I can see you wonder.
This is REVERSE PONG, remember ?
In THIS version of Pong, you can only move the pad the ball is actually
moving FROM or rather the pad that ball has just been reflected by.
So you have to estimate where the ball will go before it hits the pad on
the OPPOSITE side and position your currently activated one quickly so it
will be in the right position when the ball comes back.
Because right after the ball hit the pad on the opposite side, the one
you just controlled is LOCKED and you can move the one that has just been
hit by the ball.

Each succesful reflection gives you 10 points.
You have 3 lives, meaning that you can let the ball pass 2 times before the
game is over.

5. - Can this be fun ?
_----_----------------

Actually, if you are a nostalgic-game player who doesn't care about
3D-graphics, super-stereo-sound and Megabytes of endless animations,
it can be.
If you liked the original Pong, give it a spin.
Besides, it's just a simple 24h game we thought of a funny idea to code
on the party.
Nevertheless, in case you don't like it you can press ESCape to exit.

6. - I am tired, i will go to sleep now !
_----_-----------_-----------------------

It's almost 4 o'clock in the morning of this easter-monday 1999 (April the
5th i guess) and i am extremely tired. TNT left yesterday already because he
has to look after a few running experiments and Luebke already laid down his
tired bones to rest.

I have just been writing this text and now will duck under my beloved Falcon
to get some shuteye. Competitions were cool and so were the entries, i hope
i can get some rest before the official ceremony starts.

7. - Last words
_----_---------

Amsterdam sucks, New York is a waste of time, to hell with London and surely
fuck Frankfurt ... This is Dresden, this is the Error in Line'99, Atari
rules and Paranoia is here, too.

To all the people at the EIL'99: You're really a bunch of cool dudes, we all
fell at home immediatelly, this is Atari spirit at its best, we really had
a great time and will remember this party for the rest of our (hopefully
long) life. You Atari guys really rule in spirit, friendship and open-minded
friendlyness ...
Damn, i'm tired. |-))))

8. - Oh yeah, credits
_----_---------------

Behind my back, Abyss of Cream laid down to sleep and his Falcon still plays
some screens of the yet unfinished Cream demo ...
Oh, you mean the credits for Reverse Pong.
Here goes

- Lame language STOS : Francois Lionet and Peter Sotiropoulous
( I hope to do ASM soon, so better prepare Spion ! :-))

- Chipmusic : Luebke (unfinished, as usual)
- Graphic, code and concept: Paranoid
- Not-included Title logo which will be featured in the final version: TNT

- Ugly, but working Apple version: Luebke
(not in this directory, Luebke will probably rewrite it in C anyway)

Like said before, it's 100% done on this party, not a single line of code
or sprite made before.

9. - Why the hell does that puny 4 x 4 pixel sprite of the ball doesn't
     move smoothly ?
_---_--------------_

I have no idea ... And i'm far too tired to have a look at the code again.
Just live with it.

Anyway, i just had to find out that STOS sucks anyway and that a program
created with the patch-compiler (2.07) doesn't patch programs very well for
TOS 4.04 ... The mouse routine doesn't work.

Therefore i had to fix it generically meaning:
It will run on ST (TOS 1.0, 1.2), Mega ST (TOS 1.4), 1040 STE (TOS 1.6 and
TOS 1.62), Mega STE (TOS 2.06) and Falcon (TOS 4.01 and 4.04).

STOS really sucks sometime, i HAVE to move over to Assembler ...
.... but i first i have to move under the chair and get some sleep ...
Busy talking to TAO though, he's a nice chap, just like Candyman ... :-)
And all the other people here at the Error in Line'99 !!! It rules !! :-)))

Good night ...

                                                         The Paranoid
                                                       signing off ...

Transmission terminated, press any key to resume.
