Before all, remember our English level is very poor. We tryed to write in
an understandable English. It's your turn to try reading this file.
Good luck ! :-)

Running the demo:

What you need is:
- a 80386+ CPU
- about 2800kb of XMS
- no EMS manager loaded
- optionaly, a GUS with 512kb

The demo will work on a 386, however we strongly suggest you a faster computer,
a 486DX33 with a fast video card will be enough but a DX2/66 would be nicer.

We didn't test OLYMPUS XXXI on a 256kb GUS 'cause we haven't ! Maybe you will
hear strange noises or some samples will be missing. Don't know.

If your GUS isn't detected (i.e. you don't hear anything), ensure that a
line like "SET ULTRASND=220,3,3,11,5" is set in your AUTOEXEC.BAT. Read your
GUS manual to setup one correctly.

Some people may have problems with the config screen. For exemple, when Pollux
move his mouse (an IBM one !) the keyboard tell us that [Esc] is pressed so
in the demo the parts skip and in the config screen he return to DOS.
To avoid this you can:
1) do not load your mouse driver and use the config with the keyboard.
2) run the demo without config by typing "OLYMP31 nc". "nc" mean NoConfig.
3) run the demo by typing "OLYMP31 kb" meaning "KeyBoard".

There is also two way of not loading the music:
1) Type "OLYMP31 ns" for NoSound.
2) Type "SET ULTRASND=" at the dos prompt before running the demo.

OLYMPUS XXXI is a remake of the first episode of a cartoon called ULYSSE XXXI.
Of course, we simplified it a lot, the only thing we add is the spacial battle.
The first music (the credit music) is a music used in the french version of
ULYSSE XXXI (may be in other version ?), other music are no more copies.

Technical notes:

The whole demo is based on the same 3D system. This one handles classic
shading, gouraud shading, gouraud shading with 2 lights, florence shading,
dots and stars. No camera.
Mode video used is plain 320*200 (256 colors) without borders. If screen seems
small this is because we use a 60Hz refresh rate instead of 70Hz.
A fast video card is strongly recommanded, with a slow video card the first
vertical retrace of a 3D frame is completly lost because of the time needed to
move the virtual screen (in memory - no mode X) to the video memory.
On slow systems, stars can seem randomly ploted, this is because a lot of
intermediate frames are lost. Next time we'll do smoothier rotations.

The whole demo was wrotten 100% in ASM in about four months but the most was
made in the last two weeks.

All objects in all parts own their own animation which was hand-made,
also all faces was hand-painted with our own bugged utilities (a dozen).

EMS:
There is 247 files for 39 parts in this demo. All the datas are loaded in
XMS and are handled as a sort of virtual file system. When you want a file
you say "My dear loader, I want the file number X" and the loader give it to
you. Before, we used XMM functions but the music was a bit fucked up between
the parts probably because the slow work of the XMM (XMS Manager). So the
loader was rewritten in Flat Real Mode in order to get all the data manualy.
EMMs (EMS Managers) dislike Flat Real Mode so EMS is not allowed.

POLYGON INFO:
By ticking this in the config screen you will get a little panel on the top
left hand corner during the demo. This one display the number of faces shown
and hidden in all the 3D parts. Note that it is quite rought because of the
differents way in which the polygons are handled in the 3D system (Sometime,
some outscreen faces can be counted as "shown"). This option was first made
for aid us to correctly do the animations but we decided to allow everybody
seeing this. Thus we won't tell you "There is 20,000 faces here." because you
will see in real time that it's false. As you will see, there aren't parts
with a lot of faces because we tried to keep at least 20 frames/sec on
Thanatos computer (DX4/100VLB).
