Maybe it's a stupid place to ask for it, but I don't have better idea.

I've just received a reply from dude working in CD-Action, a polish pc magazine about including pc demoscene stuff on a dvd cover. He accepted that, but I need to have permission from groups for publication groups' stuff on those dvds.
Few years ago there was such a place in magazine and cds for demos, done by the same dude (old polish amiga veterans might remember Sorcerer). He stopped it after quitting the scene, but after my request he gave me a chance for placing some demos etc. on CD-Action cover disks.
Of course I'm not taking for it any money.

So here's my question: which groups can give me permission for such a thing? Please reply seriously. I don't want to bring to Sorcerer any problems and the same to me.

Ah, CD-Action! I read some articles a few days ago in Amber #1 about that. It supposedly brought a lot of new people from Poland to enter the scene. It's a good idea that they will promote the demoscene again. You can include Hugi issues on the CD if you want.

GaJiN: Better post a list of groups you are interested in.

I'd recommend getting Alien of Bitfellas involved. Maybe Brainstorm too, could be worth it to bundle in a few issues of Zine.

Computer Music in the UK has a regular column called Totally Trackers, which also features a 'Prod of the Month' - last week it was Zine #13, before that it was a spectrum musicdisk and a few months ago pouet.net was a featured site. On their cover DVD, they have a Demoscene directory which contains a big html page with links to download locations for every demo mentioned, including their own 'chart', platform-specific old favourites and popular trackers. No actual prods are on the DVD.

That's a much better way of doing things - everyone's got a net connection now, most demo downloads are small and it means not having to get explicit permission for redistribution. It also means that since a lot of people these days release bugfixed demos and, in the case of hitchhikr and his tracker, multiple feature releases each day [;)], the readers are guaranteed the latest version of the prod.

Does that defeat the point of a cover DVD? Maybe... ;)

Syphus: Do you have any link/screenshot of that site when Zine #13 was featured?

GaJiN: You're free to put any Brainstorm productions on there, such as the Chillosophy series or any of those, as long as it says somewhere on the DVD that all rights remain with the authors, not with the mag. Uncommercial use, yadda yadda blabla.

Regarding co-productions with Traction such as Fairytale, Fascination 2 or Challenger Deep, maybe Preacher or Rale can comment here if they're fine with this or not.

Regarding ZINE, I suggest only putting ZINE #13 on there, not issue #12. That is, if you're interested in any "diskmag" at all.

As far as I'm concerned, all Traction stuff is fair game, but on the conditions that Axel mentioned.

(afterall traymuss and siatek both from poland did the music for it, it has a article about the polish demoscene inside and a report on riverwash 2007, so this might be interesting for sure)

Of course I don't want to suggest that actually, physically burning demoscene productions onto cover DVDs is a waste of time in 2008 but...it is :) The only reason mags like CM have coverdiscs is because they contain about 3GB of audio samples and a couple of free VSTs which you have to buy the mag to obtain. Otherwise, there'd be absolutely no point.

They're finding it on their own. I suspect that it's the magazine's editor who's doing the sceney stuff - all scene-related stuff is untagged (no initials or anything) and he's answered correspondence that I directed towards "whoever writes Totally Trackers". The only thing I clued them in about was Sundown and they knew about that already. I'm not above pushing hints in their direction in the future, though ;)

Axel: a list of links is a list of links :) But anyone doing this sort of thing in a more related publication (rather than a music magazine) would maybe spend more time and perhaps include thumbnail screenshots from pouet, or whatever.

Is broadband connections common in Poland these days? If not that could be a reason to include zips on DVDs. Downloading 20 mb scene stuff over 56.6 kbps is something most people would hesitate to do I guess.

Of course, all copyright laws are reserved to authors of demos. CD-Action is only publicating them.

I'm especially interested in the classic demos from past 5-7 years, which weren't included on coverdisks. So prods from Farbrausch, ASD, The Black Lotus etc. etc. would be great.

And for Syphus - adding some demos to a dvd may interest some gamers. Dude who was only playing Crysis or something similar one day from boredom will launch something like Debris or Lifeforce and will shit his pants. "OMG awesome effects! Who has done it? And what it is exactly?" It was exactly the same with me after watching Heaven Seven ;)
The second purpose of bringing demoscene to gaming magazine is to show people that they can use their home pc's to do something - music, gfx, demo. The demoscene corner on dvd of popular computer magazine would be a great start for begginer. Adok said that many people form poland got into scene by CD-Action years ago - why it can't happen today?
