No, it uses bottles of beers.

Oh wait, you weren't talking about Skrebbel? ;-)

jury is not better then public voting, the scene.org awards proove it: i almost always disagree with almost all winners. actually this year was better than usual, still i'd rather be judged by a pleased crowd then by a bunch of oh so thoughtful critics. at least the crowd will not bash a demo because it's popular.

still i love the scene.org awards, i admit it's more difficult to find the best demo of a year than to find the best demo of a party.

the fact that you almost always disagree with the scene.org awards does not make it worse than public voting.

I'm disappointed you think there's a logical connection between the two.

(disclosure: I have nothing to do anymore nor will likely have anything to do anymore with the awards)

So, the answer for the whole topic is:

If you don't want to do a crown-pleaser demo but you want to have fun and do something that you like, don't release the prod in a party but directly to pouet.

"And there's nothing wrong with that, I must point out, since competitions' trying to solve an impossible problem"
no, compos are trying to solve a tricky but nowhere near impossible problem: to show the demos to an audience, then vote to get a ranking.

the problems only start to appear when people come up with unreasonable expectations about what that ranking means, like it's a value judgement, an indicator of quality, a reward for the work invested or a measure of popularity. it correlates will all of those of course, but it isn't any one of them directly, and more importantly, it really doesn't have much to do with the long-time impact or "relevance" of the demo as a work of art. so stop treating it like it does.

Ryg is absolutely right on that one. And this should close properly the conversation once and for all.

I somehow like the idea of organizers adjusting the votes a bit, that way I could make sure that all the stuff I like wins.
The stuff I like, and the stuff made by my friends..

and at german parties that means the german entries win. hooray!

The thread could've been much shorter if somebody tackled the first post:
Quote:
after doing the votecount, if there were something that I felt was unfair

Are you implying that you were a deciding factor to the issue whether the audience was unfit to vote -going by your own taste?

If that was somebody like Rainmaker, Smash or the Scene.org Awards Jury, half the planet would've screamed bloody murder.
