Weird $600/~485€ crowdfunding effort from distance/Lackluster

I dunno, given the minimum order requirements of some places and that they likely have jewel cases etc. it's possible the $600 is cheaper than doing it all over again for that amount of CDs, especially if he didn't pay for it up front because they label hoped to sell them all. (Comes out to about $4 each?)

I checked cdbaby's online quoter, and $600 will get you a run of 300 CDs in jewel cases, including postage to Finland. (They'll do smaller production runs, but only as CD-R, and I don't know if that's a deal-breaker.)

distance: you say you've had a good relation with this label, and it feels like it's not really my business to come barging in telling you what to do. But from this outside observer, it looks like this guy is ripping you off. He's taking advantage of the fact that you're irrationally treating this as $600 worth of music, when the real value to you is $250 of processed plastic (plus the knowledge that you've saved a crate of plastic from landfill, which is important but surely not $350 important).

The really messed up thing is that it makes good business sense for him to ask for $600, while there's still a remote chance that the kickstarter will succeed and you'll actually pay him that. In the same way that Tracey Emin's bed is worth £2.5 million while there are art collectors willing to pay that... simply by running this campaign, YOU are driving the price up to $600.

distance, you do realize what you're doing is actually illegal in finland ?

vastikkeeton rahankeräys vs. vastikkeellinen rahankeräys. so far it's vastikkeellinen.

Nothing in your campaign suggests that it's "vastikkeellinen". (or, product-for-money)

What gasman said. I'd support the campaign with a fairly significant amount if I thought it makes sense, but it's not really music, it's plastic. The music is still yours. Right?

I'd much rather donate to a "help me press new CDs at CD Baby (or wherever) and you'll get one!" campaign, really, especially since the cost is lower. You can also avoid the legal nitpickery Sol mentions in one go, by promising a CD for everyone who donates. I'll happily buy a way overpriced copies of both CDs. I'll even listen to them! (oh car radio, thy saviour of physical music trade)

I just found yet another reason to never sign a record deal, thanks.
I wouldn't mind contributing but I'm lacking a credit card to do so.

We can do something via PayPal if you like.

Looks good to me now. Sorry for the inconvenience (but I hate the way the thing works, and police have been involved in a few cases before..)

I added a bunch of ultra-crazy perks!
added on the 2015-01-16 15:43:33 by distance distance
Anyone have any thoughts as to what kinds of perks I should add in addition to "all albums on discount as mp3/flac" + "signed copies of x" "signed copies of x + lots of other cds"

I already own Spaces, so definitely interested in the FLAC/hard copy of Slice.

@2% :)

Hi Raina, here's your FLAC/MP3 copy of Slice. Did you get it?

Are any of those bazillion copies of Slice you're trying to reclaim vinyl? I might go for a helping out with a good chunk if I could acquire one. :) Otherwise, just the same as everyone else with a little bit toward the goal. (Incidentally, I don't actually own a record player but a place I visit often enough does. I've got three now, one being Esem/Stereoman's Envelooped.)

Hi Starchaser, I listed some Merck vinyls up as perks.. One was Lackluster: Showcase Sampler 12" and another is a bundle of Showcase Sampler + R U Oho? (12" complete with remixes from Sense, Esem, Xhale and.. Brothomstates.)

Yeah, got it. Blasting it as we speak, very nice.

I'm up for totally random vinyl. Chipped in.
$483 of $600 achieved!

I was told by a close friend that I need to come up with a stretch-goal offer that is for everyone who has donated, so that everyone benefits. I wonder what it could be.

Awesome that you're going to make it. But I still don't understand it, why are you going to spend that money on dead plastic? If newly pressing the exact same records is cheaper?

I really have no clue why you're doing this but I think you rock so chipped in anyway.

I really appreciate it!
Working on Merck Package, a special vinyl-only-tracks as mp3/FLAC release for Bandcamp now. just need to figure out what the best artwork is for it.

Yes. And here they are!
Indiegogo campaign

$1111 - everyone who donated to the campaign gets 2 previously unreleased Lackluster EPs via digital download. these won't be available on netlabels, labels (well.... i currently have no plans to release them anywhere but if someone throws enough money at me, you know i'll say yes to them releasing them), bandcamp, anything. digital downloads of Slice + Spaces records.

$1354 - everyone gets the $1111 perks and also bandcamp digital downloads of Merck Package, and Lexicon of Goods - my two newest albums.

Merck has come from hiding and has agreed to send me 15 Showcase CDs and 15 additional things and a gigantic package for $60-$80 (covering postage). They should arrive before the end of the campaign!

We're now at $1099 so things are looking terribly awesome. Still no word from SLSK Records, as that'd be swell to finally get closure for U-Cover, deFocus, Merck AND SLSK Records.
