RIP James 'GiZ' Storey (1973-2015)

category: general [glöplog]

I'm very sad to pass on news of the passing of James 'Giz' Storey (1973-2015). He passed away at home on 30th May and is survived by his wife, Vicky.

Many of you may remember Giz from the Amiga days. I first met him at the Destiny '91 party in Southport (UK), where Defekt were originally brought together. I ended up sitting next to him by chance, we got talking and got on like a house on fire. We stayed in touch over the years, sending each other the traditional jiffy bag stuffed with floppies and a letter. He was a very talented artist and would spend a lot of time teaching me new techniques. He'd always be there to help you out. A real diamond! He helped me out a good few times when I was in scrapes too. As a teenager I managed to blag a last minute job interview for a design position and he lent me some of his work to pass off as my own. A bit naughty, but he really saved my bacon at the time.

He moved to America for three years in the mid 90s to work at Apogee/3D Realms, where he did graphics for Duke Nukem 3D and Rise of The Triad. After returning to England, he worked at Team 17, Runecraft and a few others (including forming Rebel Boat Rocker) before falling in love with R/C racing around the year 2000. This remained his passion and he went on to organise a number of well respected races and launched oOple.com, his famous R/C website.

Sleep well Gizmo, you will be sorely missed x
