Would you rather watch demos than play games?

category: general [glöplog]
same can be said about demos!

...but I do agree, even this should be like 100x longer and 100x more content to be truly fun (like original I guess).

Time for some self-voting here.

I forgot to add, that I don't personally think much of platform games (with a few exceptions) and that apart from Commodore going bust and the general situation around the Amiga, part of the reason I turned to Doom on the PC was the massive proliferation of absolutely cutesy characters in Amiga platform games (there were LOADS of them!) The raw violence and gore of Doom was the perfect antithesis of that, and of course it would appeal to someone like me at the age I was then (21).

This is part of the reason I don't like Japanese videogames, cos they're mostly cute and platformy as well (I'm glaring at YOU, Mario!) like Zelda/Link or ridiculous-looking like Final Fantasy, which leads into my pet peeve with Manga and Anime with those inexplicable names and character designs they have. Give me some Hayao Miyazaki, anyday, he's more mainstream!

Soon 35 years of gaming and the best games have been... Ultima IV and V, Baldur's Gate 2 and Fallout 2. Both rule, games and demos.

I would add over-stylized indie games to the list of my personal "don't like". I mean, I understand that for few indie games stylization worked well, but now everyone is trying to do "their own unique style".

Indie games are somewhat interesting, I just think the word indie has been abused to some point by people who are not really all that indie. It became a buzzword at some point imo, and suddenly indiegames just sold better/more, because they were "indie". Big ass developers pledging on kickstarter and what not. Just shameful imo. This results in the real proper talented indies to have their products drown in a big ocean of bullshit. Well some atleast.

@Foebane, you don't seem to get it at all :D I for one am happy that there is this huge diversity in games, because honestly, the next call of duty doesn't mean shit to me. I'd rather play the next Zelda soup up than any american inspired fps, any effing day. To me games are partly escaping into another world. For me this is best when it's dreamy, fairytaily like, and as far from reality as possible. I try to get away from reality in the games I play, hence why I don't need it to be realistic to be fun. Infact, the more realistic it is, the more boring it is to me. Give me oozing creativity and bright vivid colors any day over the brown bland stuff that's pumped out there in big amounts.
Give me interesting and challening leveldesign, cleverly assembled to make me rage for hours, instead of some on-rail tunnelvisioned corridor shooter, where I simply can turn off my brain, and think of nothing as I shoot my way through many thousand enemies looking all alike, resembling the last 30 fps games I've played.
Call me crazy, but that's how I feel about that.

I think some people here need to go make a game and/or demo about it.

princess: I tend to go into conclusion that it is better to think thoroughly first what you want to do (or even better - prototype some ideas), then just "blindly" do. I see this indie (true indie) guys all around saying: oh, look at my new "game" project, a unique look and feel, it's gonna be owssome, and what happens next? The poor guy spends a year (or two) on something that maybe looks cool or even is fun for 1 minute, but after closer inspection it has no real "meat" inside, like hours of addictive gameplay.

For over-stylized indie games: it can be a nice touch, but I get impression some devs simply spending too much time on it.

"I don't like" means "I will not pay for it" - that's all.

@tomkh: "i will not pay for it" but i still like it..

"i don't like" taxes but someone has to feed the bureaucrats..
they are many and I'm afraid what disaster they could cause if let loose in the wild!!

i don't like angels!
1in10: Maybe it wasn't all that clear, but it was an implication. "I don't like some game" implies (for me) that "I will not pay for it", but it doesn't necessary work other way around (as you said).

Sorry my thread went off at a tangent from saying "play games or watch demos" to suddenly "I don't like some games but love others", but that's the way my threads usually go. I'm just not certain yet myself, but I feel I've played retro games to death, but I'm not that keen on the modern-day stuff either. I feel like an old fart, out of time.
