The Nordlicht Demoparty 2025 official announcement: 25th - 27th JULY, Bürgerhaus Obervieland, Bremen, Germany
category: general [glöplog]
Well spotted, fair play :) Here's a bit of explanation ^^
It is a merge / combination of different landscape photos fed into Fooocus AI and then regenerated using the anime shader, which is indeed based on Stable Diffusion. It serves as a backdrop for the website only and will not be submitted to competitions.
If I had much more time on my hands I could've created every brush stroke by hand, seeing as this type of image isn't incredibly hard to produce, however what's the use if I should better invest my available time into other party preparations.
Just in case you are wondering, the Nordlicht 2025 text logo is a creation by dstar of TiTAN and no AI was used. I used his static image to later create the vectorized animated color cycling version using Inkscape.
If you wonder what our take on AI use in competitions is, read this block from the Competitions page:
"You’re free to use assistive AI tools, you must state which ones you used and how! Entries must show your own creative input; simple prompt-only work isn’t allowed! Organizers may disqualify entries on their behalf. In the end, the audience will judge fair AI use with their votes."
As for the planned upcoming small invitation demo I am working on in my spare time, I use GPT to help me code in html / Javascript. And I've already learned a ton of stuff that way in a relatively short time, which is immensely fun. It's going to be a Wild release if anything, since it's not supposed to compete against other realtime entries. I am however first and foremost a musician, and my tracks will ALWAYS be fully created by myself, note by note, without song or beat-generating AI tools. That's a promise :)

Well said, SunSpire.
Here, let me point you to a few things that do an especially good job of ruining this picture in no particular order:
1) The seven pointed star with slightly crooked streaks in the centre of the pic
2) The heavy purple leather rags hanging in the sky (was this supposed to be aurora?)
3) The nonsensical blur/sharp combo of the "cosmos/stars"
4) The crookedness of the "time-lapsed star-streaks concentric circles"
Let's not get into overall mix of different styles, concepts, and other "artistic" things.
This is a prime example of AI slop. "Good enough". Yeah right. But good enough for whom? Well, good enough for ham certainly. Thing is, if you have a folkart/handicraft festival (demoparty) on which artists/craftsmen are competing, least you can do is source the supporting material to a real artist. Also, I don't think "good enough" does justice to the description of the spirit of the demoscene. I think it should be "excellent", not "good enough". And please forgive me. I know organizing parties is a hard job and we all appreciate it. Blame this "essay" of mine on Krill and ham who don't seem to understand visual art/craft one bit and like to shout that fact from the top of their lungs. They have good intentions, but are doing you a big disservice. Trust me, the picture is crap, you could have done so much better if you took help/advice.

Ca you please move your AI whining over to the relevant thread "AI cat" and let this thread be on topic of the party?
Sorrry. Sure. Could you also please spare us of demonstrating your poor taste in artwork? I'm off.
Well said, Krill.
Well said, ham.
Well said, 4gentE. >:)
But seriously why? Fiverr exists, Wanted.Scene.org exists, I feel like all it's doing is creating a bad first impression on this party, plus 2 different people I've asked say that it has objective problems (like outside using AI is bad, I have 2 more who did that :), like I can't tell if that's supposed to be snow or fog, and based on how it's lit I don't think the picture can either. The lines on the mountains just look awful, I thought they might have represented like a diseased marble, while someone else said it's supposed to be snow but looks more like milk flowing down, otherwise a bad look.
Every page on the party has this as the background, I feel like that's pretty on topic for me. Given that we don't have any party invitations yet, this is pretty much the most we have to go on for the theme visually.

4gentE: Thank you. You opinion is always welcome but, in the future, remember that there's no need to be rude to anyone who doesn't share your core aesthetic principles.
minebrandon: Why Fiverr? Fix the background yourself if you feel it's necessary. Although, in my undisputed opinion, the background is already good enough. :]

@ham:
Thank you for understanding that this is not only about AI art prompt-to-image generation and the accompanying ethics discussion, but also about core aesthetic principles and quality levels of the craft which are NOT (whatever anyone thinks) entirely subjective. Slop is slop, AI or human made. There is no need to defend every AI assisted picture from "biocentric haters". Once again, sorry SunSpire, sorry Krill for detracting from the core topic.

Since when is the party theme relevant for the actual productions running in the compos (apart from fast compos)?Every page on the party has this as the background, I feel like that's pretty on topic for me. If you think it's a fun inspiration :) (fire brigade, In the beginning, there was a floppy disk, Ahoy, landlubbers!, Nordlicht Express, Crime scene, do not cross)
