Help with Amiga Demo Emulation

category: general [glöplog]

Hi guys,

I've got a couple of EOC 1999 Amiga demos here but can't get them to run on WinUAE (I have the latest version).

If you can get them to run, please tell me the config you used :-)

Both output text "Releases at 92 QZ Party" to the shell, load for a bit but then exit. Any help would be appreciated, I would really like to be able to see these demos (am an ex EOC member looking for some old demos).

Thanks guys!

Can't help and try it now but this http://www.back2roots.org/Docs/Howtos/Configs/ might help you.
Those config files run most demos afair and when they don't work, tweaking mem settings usually does it.

For A500 demos, a good rule of thumb is to configure the emulator as A500-like as possible. Forget several megabytes of fast RAM, fast processors and such. Just 68000 (with "More Compatible" and "Match A500 speed" selected), OCS or ECS, 512k chip / 512k slow/fast, kickstart v1.2 or v1.3. And cycle exact mode, if your CPU is fast enough. Oh, and forget hard disks unless you really, REALLY need one to run a production.

99% of non-AGA demos work with this kind of configuration. And if something doesn't, try tweaking it a little. Switch to OCS if the gfx looks messy, switch kickstart versions and extra memory /drives if it fails to boot at all, and so on.

For AGA stuff, I have no idea. :)

I'm busy at the moment, but if the problem hasn't been solved by the time I'm not, I'll check that zip of yours to see how they work..

Ok, the problem with these particular EOC1999 prods is that they require a bunch of libraries to run. Try executing them after booting a Workbench 1.3 disk (or hard drive), should work fine then.

Looks like the Blade Distro is the only one which actually works, requiring some libraries (at least diskfont.library).. With the necessary libs, it works fine under a normal A500 config. Nice Space Ace gfx, by the way :)

The other two demos are missing a bunch of .font, .3DO and .3DS files, and before those are found they probably won't work. Sorry.

For AGA stuff, I have no idea. :)

I'd reccomend everyone to download AmigaSYS in its latest version (http://amigasys.fw.hu/). Just install it and afterwards add PC-Drives in the configuration. Then you can run all the recent Demos smoothly.

OK guys, now you've got me really excited - cos I remember the demo with the Space Ace gfx and its been like 12/13 years since I've seen it, and I am pulling my hair out trying to get it to run under WinUAE 0.9.92.

Here's what I did, I made a copy of a Workbench 1.3 disk, deleted some files from it (e.g. some of the utilities and tools; calculator/more etc) so that there was space enough for the demo files.

I then tried every permutation of the following:

- Kickstart 1.2/1.3
- OCS/ECS
- Differing values of Chip/Slow/Fast memory

The only glimpse I've had is when I use just 512k of Chip mem, a message comes up "Insufficient memory, please press mouse" (and I remember the space-agey font its in as being a font in the demo!).

break - as you've managed to get one of them running, any more pointers on what config you had? Any possibility of doing me an adf/dms if you get the time?

Arrrggh - its like I'm so close, but still so far..

Well, the "blade distro" only needs the file "diskfont.library" under "libs" directory. Works under a standard A500 config, the kind of which I described above. Didn't need any special tricks for it whatsoever, and 512k/512k RAM was sufficient. I only had one external disk drive enabled though.

Like I said, the other two can't be run until the missing files are found..

Ah well thanks mate, I appreciate your help. I take it your using a real Amiga - never should have sold mine :-(

I guess it must be an issue with WinUAE - will just have to try it out with every new version.

Cheers anyway!
