rez: MacOS X is a real OS, but for girls. So it doesn't fit in this topic. (You, being French, are excluded from that rule ofcourse... :))

And to talk again about Mac OS X, perhaps it's a good choice, just between Window and Linux... It's more friendly/beautifull/fast/well designed than Windows, but also powerfull like any other UNIX platform (OS X is based on FreeBSD, isn't it ?).
Graphicians and musicians will find all the best tools and there's lots of free tools for coders too...

go and buy Apple computers ! (especially the last PowerPC ! ;)

well, not really in fact, if you buy an Apple computer (like me) you got a cd with the last Mac OS and the update are free of course...

btw, i'm really happy to track with Renoise with my iBook, and i got some others nice trackers like MilkyTracker or Goattracker (SID tracker).
and of course there is Photoshop, Lightwave and tons of others great tools available on Mac OS X to create nice demos :)

GbND: rez suggests you should buy a new Mac every time a new OS is coughed up... Or if you are a cheapskate, you can pay $120 for the upgrade.
Or if you are a real cheapo, then you can stick to 10.3...

But macs is out of question here, as they don't do linux (unless some brain-dead Che Guevara offspring decides so), neither run Win (except the intel ones. But you might get cheaper windows boxes, by magnitudes...)

If by 'they don't do linux' you mean that they are not able to run Linux, you are wrong: Many multiplatform Linux distros run on PowerPC Macs (Debian and YellowDog come to mind). If you mean that they are not able to run "Linux applications" you are also wrong. Most GNU software can be compiled natively on Macs now, thanks to their underlying FreeBSD infrastructure. In fact, as far as free software goes, Windows is by far the most incompatible platform in existence.

GbND: I just bought an iBook G4 during november 2005, i got the OS preinstalled on the computer and a DVD with all the software (Mac OS Tiger + iLife 05).
Since, the system autoupdate without asking me for money :)

Well, ok, it exists cheaper windows boxes, but they are faaaaar less sexy than a cute iBook lil' boxe :)

To be honest, that computer bring back to me the same spirit as my dear old Amiga... all-in-one, no drivers problems, fast & clean OS, nice tools, tons of great freeware (polished and bug free !)...

The most manly thing to do is go out and STEAL the OS of choice. It's man's hunter-gatherer nature defined in modern life, you can't go wrong there in the "real men" department. Only sissies moan about which one is best.

windows programming IS HELL, but fortunatly as a demo coder i don't really need more than 4 pages of ugly Win32 code before the DirectX fun starts - and if i want OpenGL then i can use that.

the ignorance most sceners have against linux is because they care more about productions than about operating systems. may be all thier "holy war capacity" is used up by flame wars on pouet.

oh yeah. Free software is very nice, open-source is very good, etc etc. I definitely agree. However.

Problem is,
1) linux _still_ sucks bigtime (as a desktop os)
2) in fact the whole unix philosophy is totally outdated
3) the linux community consists of nerds.

Windows is of course extremely far from being perfect, but only 2 days of using linux gives me the amount of stress/headache i get in a year while using windows.
And finally about the price: we all "have friends" who use software with "slippery legal status", so i don't care about it too much at the moment.
