interesting or not?

category: general [glöplog]
er... is it too much to ask to NOT to pouetize this too much? kthxbye.

my girlfriend's sister is working for her college assignment on a mod for this chumby thingie, i dont know if you've heard of it before or not. at least it doesn't appear in the bbs anywhere - and i know because i did a search for it :).

her idea - NOT MINE! amazing! - was to showcase demos and other type of digital art content in it. i think it would be a great idea, is there anyone who can give some more ideas/hints and/or valuable help to her on this matter?

imagine, waking up with a demo. ace...

having read a few more pages on that site: seems cute. wonder how much they'll cost..

They expect it to cost $150. The only hardware spec. I find is the processor... ARM9 at 266MHz. The thingy's schematics are available but I can't open it now.

Looks VERY interesting! I would not mind to wake up listening to nectarine in the morning!

We could have a demoshow in the morning with that thing!

Why is this thread full of portuguese people? We hate linux like the next European.

Quoting the FAQ:
Quote:
Can Chumby Do Video? And the appropriate answer is "No, but it may in the future. As of right now, Chumby is too slow for video, but a driver could be written to use its specialized MPEG hardware to help it decode video.

From what I found in the wiki it has a 320x240 touchscreen with a 12Hz refresh. That's too slow for demos or video :(

no it's not. it's the amiga-standard.

Otherwise, just give any demoscene coder a development environment and there will be a demo for it - it's the law of the west.

$150 is too expensive for an alarm clock.

...oh god, now i'm sitting here repeating "chumby" in my head. someone has to pay for this. and i love the o_O logo.

from a developer angle, it might be an interesting gadget, but i'd say 150$ is WAY too expensive for something that doesn't have a specific purpose.

also, reading the faq kindof reveals that it needs a stationary 9V battery to operate properly. A gadget like this without a proper docked rechargeable lithium battery is kindof... doomed, in a way.

Since the chumby is mostly soft, can I throw it around?
As tempting as that may be, we do not recommend it. Treat it like you would treat other electronic devices.

Would my toddler enjoy this plush chumby?
The chumby was not designed to be gummed, pounded or have food stuck into any of its openings, so it's not intended for children. The chumby is for people over the age of 13.

where's the fun then? :(
