The problem with technologically based graphics

category: general [glöplog]
and by the way - i bet a lot of game developers (including myself, actually) would probably rather make something like rez than the latest hyperrealistic fps. if only someone would tell the public to start buying it. :) unfortunately, realism sells - and rez tanked.

Hey don't blame the guy, *I* was the one pointing his small article (the point of which I extracted is not even the main point) here.

Interesting, though... :)

I think rez is just too psychedelic for most people's tastes.

Also rez is not half as grand as it's premise could have let it be. I blame mizuguchi's non-rockstar attitude.

Indeed knos, thats not the main point and what he's talking about (representations and stuff) is really a lot more interesting to talk about :)
CECI N'EST PAS UN "CECI N'EST PAS UN".
I don't think anyone has actually attempted to make a 'realistic' game anyway, ever. Name a realistic game where you don't keep running when a bullet hits you, or where you can't run backwards at speed over rough ground without tripping. And show me one where you don't get "magic reincarnation" when you die!

So true! Almost every game being released is a FPS or RPG variant. There are so few fun games around and hardly any original ideas.

I don't agree that good games must look like crap (i.e. Wii stuff), but they can't all be about the graphics...(even though this is obviously the biggest selling point).

That would be so funny. You get hit by a bullet and suddenly curl into a ball and start screaming, get taken to hospital, wait 8 hours in a waiting room, then get it treated and wait a few days before you're back on your feet and ready to get back in the field.

Then again, when was the last time you saw a realistic movie like this?

if you are not trying to achive realism, look nintendo games. super mario 64, zelda the wind waker still looks good because they look like cartoon, so only way is to make cool stylized gfx until gfxcards are so powerful you can't say if it's not real or not. or what about just quit whining and make games ?

My favourite 3D game is probably still Duke Nukem 3D, but then Duke Nukem Forever (if it ever actually came out) would actually probably be better.

ALTHOUGH, having said that, one thing I really do like about Duke Nukem is the ease with which you can make levels in build, because of Duke's 2.5D sector approach, I found it way easier to make levels than when I made a recreation of my work building for Quake 3, for example.

I don't have any real point to make.

Buttler/Alarm: Matter of taste but I have much more fun with Wii games using symbols / 2D stuff / simplistic rendering than with most PS3 / 360 games trying to look as real as possible with uberfancy rendering.

Games on Wii : graphics serve the game design. Gamedesign tries to stimulate your imagination.

Games on 360/PS3/PC : gamedesign serves the GPU (not all games of course, but the majority). You imagination is no longer required, just watch the rendering and play.

This could somehow apply to oldskool games vs modern games.

I'm still dying to see some Lucasart's adventure games revival, seriously, that was my dope.
Oh, and I'm positively drooling with excitement over Super Mario Galaxy. Thats hardly realistic. Although I won't be getting it on November 16th, because my wife is getting it for me for christmas.

Actually there are a lot of original ideas out there right now, it's just that the FPS and RPG genres get much of the attention because people buy them (and the hardware manufacturers push for them as well). Don't forget that back in the "glory days" there were shoot'em'ups, platformers and adventuregames all around -- FPS and RPG games are just like that fad, except that this fad has lasted longer. :)

That said -- adventure games are still my favourite. :)

(although I'm completely hooked on LocoRoco after playing for hours and hours on the plane to/from San Francisco :)

Keops: Nintendo games are too whacky for my tastes. Too cluttered, colourful and hard on the eyes. Wii is a nice idea, but I can't stop myself getting distracted by the ugly 3d. At least with ultra slick graphics, I find myself more absorbed into the game world.

Kaneel: That would be a dream! I can't believe they haven't done something (cartoon, movie, comic, more games) with the Monkey Island licence!

gloom: I agree and I can't blame developers for going for what sells...ie. tried and tested formulas.

Oh, and you should play Sam 'n' Max if you like adventure games.. and the upcoming "A Vampyre Story" is created by Bill Tiller and some other ex-LucasArts guys, so that is indeed something to look out for.

@buttler: actually you gonna laught but I remember I found a record of an amateur theatre act of MI, but yeah, it was not "official" at all :)

@gloom: of course and hopefully, there are some people who try to come up with nice ideas as well like... Little Big Planet? :)
ButtlerTheAlarm: I can understand and see why some people just can't bear Wii games/simplistic rendering though. Not everybody can enjoy gay games ;)

I definitely agree on the whole ideas thing - nothing worse than seeing yet another quake clone with nothing really new, especially when it's been done better before. Sadly the average game buyer seems to want a barely-changed sequel to what they're already playing, so if you're running a game company you have a choice of making what you want or making crap and staying in business I guess (and yes I know thats a generalisation :)

Still, games like rez are still made, and there's always nintendo, so if you don't like the endless 3d shooting games it's not like you're left with no other options. And nintendo seems to be doing well, perhaps they'll swing the market around a bit.

Buttler: if you get badly shot, the screen should go black, and nothing else should happen, even if you quit and reload the game. Otherwise what the hell is going on? You get blown to bits but somehow reappear at the start of the level.. how? Perhaps you fell asleep at that point, and dreamt the bit where you stepped on the landmine, and just woke up?

Oh yes: Lemon scented wet wipes.

@psonice

Or maybe, the screen should go black, and then suddenly you see your body on the ground, and the grim reaper approaches.

if you melvin him, you can then haunt the level for a while.;

Oh, and of course, if you beat death at board games, you get to have another go.
