Screenshots on prodlist?

category: general [glöplog]
preacher: if the size of the images are well specified in the html, current browsers are smart enough to render the page layout first then images appear next... and hardcore people should use LYNX, no slow image issue at all!

For the time being, if this is envisionned as an opt-in feature, it could very well be done as a user script ( I could write ). This way only those who really want it will get it.

it's already interweb 2.0 so i may suggest screenshots as tooltips hovering over prodnames :)
i have no-idea about webcoding, but what if you only let a single format (f.e. only jpg) be tolerable...?? would that help.? (yeah,i know...converting all the already-existing-images would take ages...!! ) ...jus´trying to help.! (maybe a different point-of-view to the prob is sth that some ppl forget about.!)
jpeg isn't suitable for every kind of graphic, png isn't either. primitive drawings will look bad with jpeg and others will be huge with png. and gif allows animation. these three are really the minimum set to cover screenshot needs in pouet.
i c ...and i have to agree...thatz just the minimum-set.!! (how could i live without gifs @Amiga-Milestones.!!)
To find a prod, it is much better to ask Optimus than searching thumbnails

as I said, removing the file extension on the screenshot would make things easier for quite a few people. No need to worry about the format, just request the URI and the client will do its job.

have you seen those new interfaces that are being built by seadragon (bought by microsoft) and other studios, the possibility to browse by hands through numerous datas, specially visual datas, that are mapped as textures or nodes on a plane that could be spherical or not... it would be cool to browse through pouet prods and their screenshots that way, and sorted by date, group, party or whatever... kinda useless as any new technology but still damn cool :)

p01: I think the argument for your same URI method is flawed. You save space quadratically when you downscale an image (Ie, scale it down to 50%, and you save 75% space, + maybe a few more % with jpg compression, and more if the thumbnails are even smaller) so preloading fullsize images for all results only makes sense if there's a high risk that people searching for prods will view details for all prods.
Which makes me draw the conclusion: Use separate thumbnails and fuillsize screenshots.

As for the question of uaing a file extension or letting the browser do the job... It atcually doesn't matter much, and either option will probably work equally fine.
