back on crack: make more cracktros!

category: general [glöplog]
just hit me : it's probably the GBA scene that pressed the right buttons with a lot of people here.
It would be nice to revive that tradition, and give today's kids the same experience...

although one major drawback is that you don't HAVE to see the cracktro in order to play the game these days :)

we need more sinusscroolers and starfields and rasterbars in the scene.
can never have enough of those!
oh, and cubes. yes.
plasmas and tunnels too but those are too newschool already :)

The truth is... there's one main difference now: there are the 'cracking groups' who crack mostly shareware apps just for the love of a good fight... and there's the Utils group wich are more or less the picture of a warez group we had "back in the day"... The interesting thing is that 'cracking' groups or at least the elite ones (you know... ) are actually appling an "oldschool" look to their keygens (like vectorballs in the about box or chiptunes for the music)... I mean, there's this "back to the roots" feeling all over the place, not just on the demoscene side of things...

yeah, i've seen some nice keykens lately with a decent chip playing :)

But seeing as most stuff uses an installer (which is often cracked), why aren't the cracktros hooked into that? Then todays kids would be forced to watch them the way we were :)

Come on. There are ways to force kids to watch cracktros. Make an executable "quake.exe" which runs a cracktro, and when a button is pressed decompresses the packed and encrypted game executable to a temp directory (or even to memory if you're really ambitious) and runs the game... or something.

gamma, the main reason for not applying cracktros before exe today is because of patching, modified exe's can't really be patched.
