I recommend a 12" notebook like Thinkpad X31. It's small, cheap, very robust and completely adequate. Plus, NIPPLE!

I thought they are called netbooks, umpcs, mids and whatnot these days. ;)

Anyway I think I wouldn't buy anything below 11'' or so. Also, I need a somewhat decent keyboard and cpu.

asus' eee pc is highly recommendable for quick and clean wireless fun.
it easily fits into your pants pocket too, if you're wearing mans pants that is.

if you have a few extra £££ to spare, you might want to look into the Kohjinsha SC3 UMPC...

BB Image

...it's _fucking_ small (in fact, the smallest UMPC available)

there's currently a video review on the frontpage of http://www.umpcportal.com/

i have an asus EEE (with xp, replacing the horrid linux crap that came with it), and the only real complaint i have is the sub-standard screen (they could've gone to at least 800x600 and an extra inch), plus the fact that whenever i try to press '3' i press '4'.

uncle: you must have the original EEEPC with the pathetic sized screen? the new EEE PC 901 has a larger screen/rez (8.9" 1024 X 600) and some other nice new features, including insane battery life something like 6.5 hrs in real usage)

i think the eeepc thing is quite interesting and i'd love to have one. the only ting is, i NEED windows on it because i have to use filemaker for work, and the eeepcs that are capable of windows are too expensive again.

rephaim yeah.. i have the old 701 thingy (i think). Battery lasts for about 2.5h if wifi is on, etc...

get a mda. you can code on it, email, word, photoshop, disassemble code, exploiting the internet and so on. up to 32GB

Dipswitch: the new 901s come in two options: with XP Home or Linux, both priced at around £299. The only difference between the options (apart from the OS) is that with the Linux option you get 20GB SSD storage and with XP Home you only get 16gb.

I wasn't keen on the original eeePC because of that tiny screen, but I think this new upgraded 901 is great, just preordered mine! ;)

Never buy an Acer. "Acer" is computer-lingo for 'utter crap'.

i think the eeepc is the first ever gadgety thing that i *want*.

you can even install Vista: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Dr8pq3jLYc&eurl=http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2008/07/asus-eee-pc-901-with-vista-ultimate.html

apparently it runs very well. wtf!? i can't wait for this think to arrive :)

dipswitch, just kick off that awful xandros-thing that comes with the cheap ones and install xp instead. it works like a charm on the 701/4g surf series. and installing an extra gig isn't too hard either, nor is it expensive. i kind of spared some 130 bucks that way, if we leave out the fact that my screen is 2cm smaller than in the newer versions. :)

i have ubuntu running on an extra card though, just in case i may be surrounded by sword-wielding linux-people at one point.

plus, the eee is a good substitute portable screen for your amiga and c64, i build me a new place-savvy c64-setup with that one. :)

daIezy: jep, very useful for retroparties (-CRT) ;)
added on the 2008-07-26 19:31:29 by button button
how'd you use the eee as a screen? gutting it's innards?
added on the 2008-07-26 19:42:45 by _-_-__ _-_-__
So... given that Asus are super-duper-platinum sponsors of Assembly, they have a highly desirable product on the market, and this year they're up against NVidia in the doing-stuff-to-impress-sceners stakes - what are the chances that we'll see eee PCs in the compo prizes? Or are they just going to hand out random unsold crap from their storeroom floor instead?

Come on Asus, show us how awesome you are... :-)
