yo guys. i've the idea that these computers have been very popular among poueters, so here's an advice request.

i plan to buy a subnotebook real soon. right now i'm considering the eee pc 901, cause i think the 10" ones are a bit big, sortof beating the purpose (as i already have a pretty decent laptop). but i haven't really looked into other brands yet, any worth checking out?

also, i've not found a linux version (with a bigger SSD than the winxp version) of the eee pc 901 anywhere on dutch sites and stores. anyone got some gossip why? also, how removable is the 901's SSD exactly? does it mean that in 2 years i can just buy a then-much-cheaper SSD and plug it into the 901?

I'm perfectly happy with my EeePC 701. Now of course i'd buy a 901 instead, but the 2 inches are not big enough reason for me to swap for a new one.

I think the SSD's are soldered in or something (or maybe it was the memory chip), not sure if you can swap it easily.

yeah, according to wikipedia (tm) the SSD is soldered in 701 4gb versions, but the 901 ssd's are removable.

hmm the msi wind 100 is pretty cool also, actually: costs like an eeepc 901, but has more of everything - including size, though. now i'm doubting again whether the 4cm difference is worth it (22cm wide for an eeepc, 26cm for an msi wind). french info on http://www.msi-computer.fr/index.php?page=9&id_type_produit=&id_prod=754.

The wind100 is almost as large and as heavy as many older subnotebooks (for example lattitude X300). May be even cheaper to get one of those from ebay instead.

The new Dell Inspiron mini looks pretty interesting. But I am very reluctant to pay a 50% premium just because I happen to reside in europe.

1kg, it says - are the other subnotebooks lighter? (including battery)

the eeepc 1000h is AMAZING, really. we have one here at home, and sometimes i feel like exchanging my demolaptop for that one. it's small, fast, and has an insane battery life. it's like some toy or something, it's lovely.

how long is the battery life? i had the idea that the 1000h had significantly less battery than the 1000 or the 901 because of the normal HD..

A guy in one of my study groups has a Wind, and he's very happy with it. It's a little big for a subnotebook, but it seems very sturdy. The keyboard seemed to be of good quality too.
I concidered getting one myself, but I am probably going to wait until the next generation and see what happens, since I don't really need a laptop that badly at the moment.

Skrebbel, reply to mail plx?
sxrebbel: the battery life of the wind is much worse though (with the standard battery).

Does anybody own one of these? What I am reading on the web appears to be quite positive so far. And it is cheap enough to buy as a toy :) The only drawback seems to be the fan, but apparently that can be fixed by software.

Are we going to have a new category for netbook demos?

the ssd in the 700er series is soldered in, but to me that's not too much of a big deal because of the embedded card reader. i run ubuntu next to windows that way, and if i actually want to store some downloaded files, i have my 2,5" external plugged in.

I bought one a few days ago, and I'm 100% positive about it so far. I've read about the fan too but I really don't notice any overly loud noise or something. Definetely a subnotebook I'd recommend.

I bought Acer Aspire One like month ago and it was quite disappointment to be honest :). Partly probably because of its OS - linpus lite really seem to be crappy, but too lazy to install WinXP / proper linux distro...

Yeah well I formatted and installed XP immediately. But it's lame to blame the hardware for your laziness ;)

i quite like the looks of the lenovo ideapad u110 and the hp voodoo envy 133.

pera, i tried it, and i'd say that compared to xandros, this would probably be the winner.
i still have to figure how to deactivate the easymode-like interface in this distribution, but until then i'll stick to hardy heron which runs like a charm on my 701. :)

i know some1 who recently bought some 1.6GHz-Processor_Intel-GFXCard-Onboard_one ... i for myself wouldnt get myself sth like that...doesn´t compute too well... from what he tried so far at my place is the only insight i have so far,so don´t let this post get through as a real-comment ;) ( but nothing worked, lol )

i hate money,so i hate commerce,so i hate buying new hardware_all_the_time ! ;)

Stream 2008 already had a low end compo with EeePC 701 as one of the accepted platforms.

I have an Aspire One, and I really like it. The linux distro that came with it was crappy so I installed Kubuntu on it and it started to be fun to use. Be sure to try one out somewhere though, the keyboard is small (but has a good feel in my opinion) and the touchpad certainly takes some time to learn..

but what can you do with it ? apart from posting on pouet and read mail ? :)
