Not all binaries are working on each system configuration BTW. A quick video embedding would actually help more people watching a demo listed on pouet.

It is something different, if you watch a video first and then decide to download the demo and then find out it doesnt work than vice versa, because I bet many just delete the demo bins and don't bother searching for a video of the demo after that.

Yes, yes, yes. No, no, no.

There will always be the hard core that will run binaries, but in the end lazyness always rules the (m)asses...

gloom's right...
PLAY -> INSTANT PROFIT
VIEW VIDEO / DOWNLOAD DEMO = DO SOME WORK; PROFIT;

ppl just behave like that... lazy.
oh yeah, lazyness is killing the scene :)

If it would be possible to instantly execute a demo it wouldn't be a problem, though... it's all just about the "profit" and so in the end video's will rule them all if it's not possible to have "instant profit" from binaries.

So... compare "profits" and bring up an idea how to make "instant profit" out of binaries compared to a video... as soon as audio/video quality increases to a certain treshold, binaries will start to get obsolete... it's just a matter of time anyway, i guess.

thanks for your attention,
just my two schilling. :)

parapete: Well, I can only speak for myself, but I _know_ how shitty the dust-particles in "Regus Ademordna" looks in the YouTube-video, and how awesome they look in 1680x1050, so yes: it does matter to the author of the demo I'd say :)

gloom, yup I can't argue with you about youtube. I guess I'm speaking from a biased position anyway what with not having a Windows machine at the moment.
Windows demos? Never!

I, for one, don't have anymore a computer capable of running any latest PS3.0+ demos. Even the PS2.0 ones are mostly too much for the old Radeon 9600. And then there's times when I'm browsing Pouet on Mac, so there's even less chances of getting any kind of binaries working.

In fact, I've watched lately almost all the new demos from Capped.tv. Don't know if this fits for an average Pouet visitor, but easy way for watching demos online in high quality video would be neat. And besides, when moving to non-PC platforms, how many of you really have the hardware to watch the demos? :)

It's quite an unfortunate trend indeed, I've been doing some of the same. If those using processing have an advantage, it's that one.. (even if among them, online video is still very represented)

(C64 demos, I watch on an emulator, does that count?)

no, emulators are blasphemy too, eacht time you use them god kills a furry animal

I show a lot of demos to friends of mine and

"Look what this program does...and it's only 64K!"

will always sound a TINY BIT more impressive than

"Look what that video does...and it's only 82MB!".

You can't beat the feeling of running a brand new demo on your own machine in realtime.

Salinga's idea, on the other hand, is quite charming: having a video (with good resolution) in place of the screenshot will help a lot if you're looking for a particular (older) demo...

The video is also often a good reference if your hardware has rendered the demo right. Some may thumb down a demo not because it itself was bad but it was renderend faulty on the viewers hardware.

Salinga, if it doesn't run on the thumb-downers hardware, it won't make a difference if there's a video for reference.
