Saga Musix: At least it runs smoothly on someone's PC and I don't have to worry about possible infections.

Maali: What's a good sandbox program for running PC demos in an updated Windows XP Pro. SP3?

Given the fact that a YouTube security hole was discovered last week where it was possible to execute any JavaScript on a YouTube video site... No, you still have to worry about infections. Better turn your computer off NOW if you don't want it to get infected. Even Pouet.net was infected by a worm once.
ive found an elegant solution to that problem.
i just uninstalled my AV.

The consequences will never be the same again.

Saga Musix: Wow, that's crazy. Another reason to keep using security protections.

What do you guys usually do? Do you risk them?

Yes. Mostly, what Maali said, if the name of the group does not ring a bell then i usually disable the av protection shields and run it (exclusion list does not work for me). Also comments on each prod may give you a general impression about other people's experiences. Art deserves a small sacrifice. ;-)

@OP:
I handle my Windows installation like sh*t, ie, i dont care what happens with it.
If it is broken all i do is opening a console on my main OS (Ubuntu Linux) and type some magic words:
sudo dd if=/kernspeicher/winbackup.img of=/dev/sdc

I should mention that Windows only has 250 GByte and the rest "a little bit" more, kernspeicher for example is 1,5 TB. ;)

Takes awhile but after that it works as good as new and i didnt even had to pay for it, isnt relying on more than one OS great? :3
demoskene killing my stuff since 2010

I guess we dont want the demoscene to be 'too clean' cut. Crack scene. Fine. But when getting bunched together with virus makers I think the line of 'too dirty', is crossed.

Would not the most efficient solution would be for packer/cruncher developers to distribute unpack util/lib/source? Then antivirus makers will get what they want. That is, a way to identify the executable AND process the unpacked data.

But then we'll lose the ofuscating property of packers/crunchers but IMHO thats a minor and idealistic luxury problem.

1. get lots of buddies each with a different AV
2. make kkrunchy'd demo
3. have it scanned by said buddies and submit appropriate False Positive reports
4. upload whitelisted demo
5. PROFIT... and pants off!
