Solskogen 2013

category: parties [glöplog]
gloom: Uh, how is a new tool a new compo? It's just another way of authoring shaders (yesyes, with a wee bit of music integration, but still)...

kusma: it's an interesting authoring platform. You are right in that it's not directly new, but it has traction, and Solskogen wants to be where the puck is going, not where it's been, so.. I strongly recommend anyone who want to make traditional demos to do just that :)

Puryx: pizzeria 150 m from the venue. DUB 0 m from the venue.

no tents to sleep on and the house with the red car so far away now?
this calls for 16 bottles of salmiakki, at least.

Having made it there twice and to Kindergarden not even once I'm sure I'll be there again this year, bumming weed off of Arcane.

gloom: It's about as much a "platform" as notepad is.

kusma: that's just stupid and you know it :)

it's pretty simple now, but multipass rendering and sequencing are coming soon. i think it's a great idea Gloom, i'm happy to help the compo happen. i say, lets try it, see how people respond. it's optional after all. as for me, i see myself releasing less and less demos in exe format, and more as online demos with all the source in there. unless i need to do something really impressive, then i'll go real OpenGL and custom C++ of course.

This.

gloom: Yes, and it totally makes sense to include online-demos in the democompo. But a dedicated compo for a tool? No.

kusma: online demos are now included in the demo compo, instead of the separate "Web demo"-category we had last year -- exactly for that reason. Seeing that Shadertoy-shaders are usually one-scene-affairs, it made absolute sense to keep that separate, taking a cue from the Firefox Single Effect-demo we had the year before.

Hivemind - I have a question: so, of those participating in exemusic compos - how do you feel about the 16k sizelimit at Solskogen? Been getting a few "my synth won't fit, so I would participate if I could, but alas..."-comments lately, mostly from people who actually contribute to parties, and I wanted to check what you guys think.

The backstory for setting it at 16k was to discourage stuff like sticking large samples in there, but there seems to be a nice honor code going on these days ("Use them for drums only") which I have no problem with.

Gargaj: they're mainly your hardest competitors in the compo ;)

The limit is probably ok, as there are synths that can do it. But personally, my synth is around 22kb for a good track, and it's not likely to get smaller, as it's a comfortable 64k intro size.

So, objectively, it's fine. People are entering and it's not hurting too much. But if it were 32kb, I would enter.

Also, if it were 32kb, I would probably use big samples, too, just for the record.
