Duangle starts Nowhere crowdfunding-campaign

category: general [glöplog]

As you might remember we gave away some Nowhere early-access accounts at Nordlicht, well:

The folks of Duangle (which are faith and paniq) have just launched their official crowdfunding campaign for Nowhere.

They have been working on the project for quite a while and it looks like its ready to go to the next stage. If you like trippy (reda demoish) visuals, a driving electro sound and want to see this gem grow you better check it out and see if you'd like to support it.

I realise that things are hectic when you launch a thing like this , but:

Facts:
-Same Founder/Raised number in video as on the site. (196/3814 right now)
-Everybody paid the minimum $21 ($19,45 if you do the math)
-No mention of any fees for collecting the money or why the numbers are what they are.
-No mention of handling your information with care, and not selling it to everybody and his aggressive add company.
-No mention what will happen if they don't reach their intended goal
-You need to watch the video to get certain important information (Like the amount of money they want to raise etc, i did not have the patience to watch the whole thing) no transcript available.

-There is probably more, but my scam meter is already way in the red area...

Conclusion:
Total scam, do not give money.

Sorry :(

Facts:

- Er, the low average is from the pre-alpha founders. The bar has been raised for this campaign and the new minimum seems to be 21€.
- The numbers will update once their payment handlers update their stuff
- This is a two-person outfit of old old-school (ex-)sceners that hate ads as much as the next guy. Why should they sell the little data they have
- They indeed should mention what happens if they don't reach the goal (and what's the timeframe here, anyway?)

Some more fundamental obstacles I see:
- Unknown dev, no track record outside of demoscene stuff
- Untested, weird concept, no known IP
- Ambitious plans and next to no man power
- best case: Dec. 2015, a project of this nature will be delayed. A lot.

So they ask to support an untested, miniature development team, with no track record, with an untested concept, with unfinished tech, outside of the usual crowd funding comfort zone (KS, et al.) to deliver something in 2 years (really more like 3 or 4).

That won't be easy. But good luck. :)

The timeframe is open ended. As long as we can work forward from the funds we get, it means we are in for a tougher ride, preparing new feature videos and advertising our alphas as best as we can to make sure the funding keeps flowing. Getting the game delayed is always a danger.

We also have the option to take more traditional avenues of funding, but I'd really like to avoid that.

I'm aware of your objections, and I wonder myself if I've actually gone bonkers, but I'd like to prove you wrong. I picked this project because it was the only thing that excited me enough to keep me burning for months. It's been absolute fun so far and I really hope we can ride it to the end.

paniq is definitely bonkers but the project is up to the 75th alpha, so a lot of work has already gone into this. also he forgot to say he's been working in the games industry for a decade..
Ah yes, that. %)

Well, personally I have faith in paniq .. oh, wait! let me rephrase that .. I mean I trust paniq and faith enough to believe that they are not a "total scam" and since they supported our demoparty twice before I am more than happy to support them as well with the little I got (but that'll have to wait until next month)

It all starts with an idea right? And paniq as well as faith are quite capable individuals with a lot of talent, maybe that crowdfunding run is exactly what is needed to give this project the final push to get it rolling into a proper direction! I wish you good luck anyhow! ^^

I talk with paniq quite a bit on twitter, and if it's a scam i can only say he deserves that money for the work he's done on this so far :D

But no, it's not a scam. And considering how they're doing this, I don't see "running out of money and abandoning the project" as a risk at all.

If you buy in at this point in time (pre-alpha), you're not going to see any finished game for a long time - but you're going to get to play with all the alpha versions, of which there will no doubt be many. And you'll get to play with all the test tech. As a demoscener, that's probably as appealing as the actual game :)

Having watched the progress a bit, the big concern is still the size of the project - but I've seen paniq battle through some of the tougher bits lately, I think he can do it. My main worry really is that the technology he's picked will bite him further down the line, but I guess that can be worked around, with a little hair loss :D

Btw, faith's artwork is *great*. What I'm most looking forward to is the point where it gets beyond paniq's attempts at making stuff with the in-game tools (cool as they are at times), and faith can have a lot more input.

Why didn't you use a random crowdfunding platform?

but he did, all the backend work is done by the humble store.

Best of luck to you, I've been following the updates closely from day one, and will probably be funding as well :)

Look at it this way:
If i was just a regular surfer stumbling upon the Nowhere crowdfunding page, i would not get the info provided here.

Also, their blog has a lot of info on the project, but they never stress that in their video.

Now, i wish them the best of luck. And even tough I have my doubts about the project reaching the "big dream" goals in december 2015, I am pretty confident that they will produce something interesting.

What is available now is already a nice toy and while the controls are currently hardcoded to QWERTY, it only took me about 5 minutes to find and change the keys in the python source.
