Why don't you guys let these chaps know you exist?

category: offtopic [glöplog]
We don't need to publicise the demoscene, because all mainstream news outlets have staff who are constantly watching the output of demo parties ready to report on them when something good comes along, like the Mercury intro. These staff are highly knowledgeable about the demoscene, and can be trusted to never make any stupid factual errors such as claiming that it takes 3 years to decode images off an Amiga disk.

back then pretty much anything about the scene in mags was written by people from the scene (or atleast by people with close relation).

I know, I just wanted to give an example of an Amiga mag which reported about the scene.

How are magazine articles not outreach?

I am only speaking about the articles in the early Amiga mags here but in my opinion these didn't really make any people join the scene. Those that were interested it in knew about it anyway due to certain crack intros in front of the games and those who weren't might have read the articles (if at all) without caring much about what these were all about.

Nowaydays it's different of course (no more crack intros and Amiggggahh has been dead for decades) but I still think that people who are interested in demos will find the scene on their own.

the intention is what makes the difference. back then noone wrote articles to get people into the scene.

I still code the occasional crack intro (just as you do) but you know what I meant anyway, todays amount of crack intros in front of (amiga) games is almost equal to 0! :)

Well said, I fully agree.

i have about as much interest in looking smart to random pouet readers as i have in promoting what i call scene to anyone. and i rather see the scene dead and buried than adapting it to the needs of a new generation. i like my hobby like it was in 1988, and i dont see why i should change that. call me caveman all you want, i expect no less from outreach mediawhores :)

hey don quixote, "adapting the scene to the needs of a new generation"... made me chuckle... so you seriously write all that shit without having any clue what it is that we do? that's pretty rich... and relieves me of any desire to explain :) have fun in 1988!

It just strikes me that instead of this insane verbiage in response to my post which is running into more than three pages now, if one of you had simply put that effort into just GOING OVER to that damn FunctionSpace website, and utilised half that fucking effort into posting a 3 line comment about the scene, a lot more would have been accomplished.

Someone has to be the bigger man here - havoc? :) How about it? :) If you want, I can post as well, but I just don't want to be the only one.
If you care so much, why not you? There's half a fucking effort in that post already.

Preachers has leading. If you have an idea, and you don't follow it through yourself, how can you expect any body else to?

+1 for Preacher.

Fine. I SAID I would. I just did. (before I read keito and StingRay's post).

Can't wait till all these enthusiastic physicists and mathematicians and whatever find this discussion - I'm sure they'll be dying out of love for us after that.
Please don't use the word "us".
