THE MAKING OF
WAIT
After some experiences with the SID chip and my recently arrived Korg poly61 synth, I had gathered much knowledge about subtractive synths.
So I wanted to make a sample generator.
It was quite simple. Just some basic waveforms.
And with ADSR envelope, ofcause (such a big shame that all .mod trackers didn't have that...)
I also added detune to make it more fat.
Chords were simply done my mixing some 037, 047, 038, 058, 049, 059 combinations of some samples.
The tricky part was to simulate filter... I couldn't, so I made a workaround..
I made 16 stages of each waveform by simply smoothing the waveform.
Repeating that 15 times by smoothing the previous sample.
The sawtooth gave impressive good result when sweep a chord.
I first generated some samples and wrote a song in protracker using them.
After that, I made my 100% own simple player to play simple sequences.
I rewrote that song into my own player.
Then I had this little standalone .exe approx filling only 2kb..!
My brother (Dr.Who) who was always impossible to impress with glenz-vectors or any other technical achevements on Amiga, suddenly showed up in my room.
I showed him my 2KB sound preview exe.
He instantly asked 'IS THAT ONLY 2 KB!!???'... 'you must create a 4K intro with that!!'
He was impressed! So that was something.
Then I found my usual voxelspace engine, which is quite simple and converted it into Ham6. I added vertical mapping mode into it too :)
Also some simple bumpmap mode also to give variation.
These routines needed texture, so I also had to include my usual texture generator.
All within 4KB.
At the TCP97 I showed a preview of the intro on an Efreet member's Amiga.
When the chords played, Lemmus said something like 'Jarre er også dejlig...' (Jarre is also nice..) in a bit friendly sarcastic way :)
Then a member of Puzzle (Hexagon?) asked me 'Is that your 40k intro?'
'No, 4k', I answered...
I won a backup-tape drive in the compo.. - isokadded on the 2025-12-06 14:20:27

- This demo became a nightmare.
I tailor made it for a standard A1200 with 14mhz and 2MB.
Short before competition I realized that it was totally wasted, since the standard already at that time was A1230 with fastram, a completely different architecture... My routines were optimized to work in chipram on bitmap so they did not benefit the faster architecture of fastram and 030 cpu, which most other competitors used...
I bought a 030 card short after :) - isokadded on the 2025-11-28 18:48:05

- Forgot the thumb... here it is.
I was thinking of if this copper trick could be possible (only theory..):
1. Set 32 $0180 background color commands in a row with copper on each line.
2. On that, draw 5 bitplanes of 0000111100001111 etc and make that show columns in 31 colors with 4 pixels and 4 pixel background.
The copper may only allow 55 colors to be set in a row..
But then lat the copper set the 32 $0180 and then the next 16 colors $0182, $0184, $0186 etc.
Thats 48 colors.
The last 16 colors can be set by CPU simultaneously
move.w d0,$dff1a0
move.w d1,$dff1a2
etc
That could give 64 colors in a row.
And int requires fewer commands to draw a color.
So in the end a bigger area. Mabye in 4x2 ? - rulezadded on the 2025-07-26 13:39:53

- Btw:
No matter what technique used (HAM og Copper), what if the rotation itself is done by precalculated x and y skewing, like in Turmoil by Sanity, that skews Y and X separately AND only skewing the columns (and) that moved since last frame?
That could free cpu time for a better y resolution? - isokadded on the 2025-07-22 09:19:53

- Impressive oldschool cometition!
Good work, all of you who try this :)
Its along time I have done Amiga demos and may not do any more..
But I cant resiste thinking of 'how is this done'..
Is any of these attempts using the technique that Flash Production did in
"Danish Knowhow" from 1990?
https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=27125
There is a copper splitter on each 4 pixels.
It uses 5 bpl with %00001111 masks to set all different bitplane 31 colors, and then it sets 32 background colors to see between the 4 px bitplane gaps.
That makes at least 63 colors that way.
Mabye this method is used now, so then please forget my comment :)
But if not, it could mabye give some extra possibilities? Even adding sprites?
Sadly I am not going to try, but mabye you can (re)use that old idea? - isokadded on the 2025-07-22 09:12:54

- THE MAKING OF
M0MB (A1200 version)
After releasing Megademo 1, I was sure it I would not make any more megademos. Just a one-timer..
But short after I got the idea to make a parody of Flash Production's "Digital concert" that should be a very long James Last remix music disk, just like these.
It should have an intro, and the the entire James Last long play mix....
But it didnt become that actually... I only made a short James Last sample module and lost interest...
Meantime other ideas appeared.
It became a megademo. It should have:
Intro, techno part, traditional part, credit part and an end part.
Obligatory stuff for a megademo ofcause.
The techno part, which was also designed, directed, and EVEN contains musical contribution by Dr.Who, became most interesting part of the project.
After watching Front 242 on "100 minutes" on MTV we got the idea of making such techno and adding child drawings on.
That became "M0mb".
This demo is actually an A1200 compatible re-release of this sub part.
More info about this megademo when someone uploads it on Pouet :)
What does "M0mb" mean?
Dr. Who (my brother and only 'real' memmer of GFB. Al other are fictive (used by me)) had a dream. (Or nightmare..?)
He dreamed that Depeche Mode had released a maxi single, and on the B side was a song called MØMB (With 2 dots above the 'B')... probably inspired by 'Behind The Wheel' where there are 2 dots above the 'T'.....
Or was it JM Jarres' Zoolook maxi he dreamed about? can't remember.. have to ask him one day...
Well, its 30+ years ago... If i remember more details, I will add them. - isokadded on the 2025-01-25 15:21:07
