- demo Atari ST Eat My Bollocks by Equinox [web]
- Resurrected an old STE, was going through some floppies to find any interesting ones that still works... Success!
Eat My Bollocks is still perfectly enjoyable in 2009 (nostalgia or not)... - rulezadded on the 2009-05-09 05:45:34
- demo Wild Hidden Agenda by Those Up Fucked Sceners [web] & Dead Hackers Society [web]
- Ok, we are seriously getting too old for 48 hours+ _no sleep_ partycoding sessions...
So, I am sorry for the lack of proper sync and, well, the current need for an emulator to run it! (oh my, i thought i would never have to utter those words... sigh...)
Friendly fuckings to TG stage crew, who with their crappy beamer only managed to run the demo in a tiny window on top of the windows desktop. Fuckings to myself for not managing a vidcap in time (but it was sleep or crash - and we actually respected the compo deadline and delivered on time).
Fun fact: It does run on real STE hardware, provided you do a bit of soldering... :P
Ok, the max theoretical memory limit of an STE is 14mb, but that requires an MMU reconfiguration... So 4Mb is the "normal" maximum, but I am aiming for 2Mb (or, at 1Mb, we would get c64-style loading breaks... pick your poison - i did this once already for 4Mb machines in atari behn so, with enough requests I may bother adding a new codepath).
The reason for this massive RAM usage is that our YM musician failed us just days ago, and so xni was kind enough to hack up a 12khz sequenced DMA soundtrack for us in virtually no time. The STE has a nice DMA chip in addition to the YM2149, but unlike the Paula found in Amigas, it does not support freely adjustable playback frequencies. It does have up to 50khz fixed frequency playback tho! It also only has two channels, and so the CPU will be doing a lot of resampling and mixing, which eats about 30% of the CPU time and would make overscan out of the question... More info on the STE hardware at http://atari-ste.anvil-soft.com/html/devdocu1.htm
Thanks to Duckers & co for letting us port their nice physics cube stuff... err.... convert... erm... Ok, sources are available upon request... :D
Anyway there will be a proper version (yes, it will happen or evil will probably have my head on a platter). Shouldn't take many days either.
And please give us a break. The STE is 20 years old this year. We entered in the combined compo with an 8Mhz machine, when the rest were all PC, GHz CPU and massive pixel shader GPU. Which, btw, is also nice, but hardly comparable to the hardware banging assembly code that is this demo.
Originally, it was mean to be a nice little compofiller with a scroller and just for fun - as we had From Beauty to Ashes in final a couple of weeks go. Beeing my usual hyperactive self, I decided that we had to start another demo for TG.
And so we hooked up with evil and gizmo, and it kinda took off... They both did massive work, coming up with new stuff rather than just recycling old effects. Proteque did his first STE pixels, and How actually learned 68k assembly as we were partycoding!
And we had great fun while doing it, which is really all that matters!
Peace to all Breakpoint _and_ TG compo participants. Let's enjoy demo scene activities on ALL platforms, software and hardware. More code, pixels, music - and less bs - makes nerve a happy maniac.
Thanks for reading, and please fix the platform... That is Atari STE - with an E. - isokadded on the 2009-04-12 18:40:37
