- @MrsBeanbag, I prefer to see the "Kaiser" related symbolism as a metaphor for "despotic authority". But I'm open to different interpretations. Also, thanks a lot for your very insightful comments!

- you're on to something there. add some psychosis to the mix, and ask yourself how many kevins there actually are. ;)

- Awesome idea with the different endings! Great hypnotic ride with a hint of "more to it", solid soundtrack, and I love those slow motion explosions of yours :D

- I want to point out that this demo was a group effort. :) Without the tool builders, tech providers, the awesome narrator and solid last minute help with 3D modeling I couldn't have made it. Thanks for sharing the sleepless nights with me!

- @sam: I recommended it precisely _because_ it is one of the most controversial movies touching this topic, and investigating it (what you did, good link) gives further valuable insight. Please note that I didn't say "watch it, it's funny". When I watched it a few years ago it felt terribly wrong for my sensibilities, and I'm still not entirely sure what to make of it. The fundamental questions about what art is, what it's supposed to do, what it's allowed to do etc. being risen here can't be answered ultimately, but it's fine to discuss this, over and over again. This also applies to other problematic topics... like sexism (especially the implicit subtle day-to-day one).
Can something that is "stupid and hard to endure" be artistically valuable at the same time? Questions like these are worthy to be contemplated.
Regarding my own work (and I do have a history of creating polarizing stuff): I want to learn from its reception and grow from it.

- @phazoon: Thanks again for taking the time. The scenes you're describing are meant to be uncomfortable in a certain way. I explicitly wanted this to be disturbing and to brutally break the "funny" context here and there to create a sort of confusion that makes you go "wait, what?". I think the sound design in particular reflects this.
The fact that you didn't just laugh about it is a good thing, and I'm kind of happy to see this kind of reflection about actual content within a demoscene audience.
It's also fine to laugh about it of course, there _is_ a very apparent layer of "sillyness" which somehow hides the creepy and disturbing aspects of the demo. I probably could have gone full on horror, but embracing this ambiguity seemed to be the more interesting choice from an artistic standpoint.
Your initial comment did come over as a bit offending, thanks for clarifying that you want to raise those kinds of questions - instead of just going with "the demo sucks because it's _supposed_ to mock people with disabilities".
Artist intention does play a little role within an "artsy stuff" context.

- @Kylearan: Noted. Excuse my sarcasm, but I'm beginning to feel mocked for having tried to achieve something with this demo. I was expecting completely different aspects of it being highlighted in the debate.

- @citrus: The number station idea was inspired by UVB-76, which was one of the weirder ones. I decided to use a bell alarm instead of a buzzer. The background is composed of 3 layers of random radio static. "6581" and "386" I arranged from children's voice samples saying single numbers. I used iZotope Trash for a fitting distortion to make those fit with the radio static. So, not random ;)
@phaazon: Thanks for the elaboration. I still do wonder what exactly it is you consider offending in the demo - taking into account all the other works of art out there, including those featuring grotesque cartoon characters or otherwise weird monstrosities. How would you create a grotesque and disquieting mirror image of a maybe-human character? Do you have a general problem with horror movies?
Watch Toy Story and look at the humans in there - offending? Have you considered that there might be more layers to this demo than it just "being a silly joke"? - isokadded on the 2017-04-19 10:55:27
