• Der Ausdruck des Gemäldes beruht in hohem Maße auf den Gestaltungsmitteln, den Farben und der Linienführung. Die Szene – und besonders die Vordergrundfigur – ist grotesk verzeichnet und in Farben wiedergegeben, die nicht der äußeren Wirklichkeit entsprechen. Von seiner eigenen „inneren Hölle“ ausgehend visualisiert der Künstler hier eine desperate Seite des Fin de siècle: Angst und Apokalypse.
