- oh and before you start whining about "but 400x300x32 is more than 320x200x8" (<- a lot of popular DOS demos run in 320x240x32 or even higher resolutions btw) take a look at the nonstop ibiza experience by orange. great demo, runs at a nice framerate. and it's 512x384x32 or 640x480x32.. not exactly sure.

- say mister fillbert, perhaps you should cut the attitude. "this demo uses 400x300x32 thats six times more blablabla".. and the effects are at least six times less intensive than any fashionable demo :) i know, optimizing is an art but considering the effects i'm not very happy with the fact that it skips frames on a p2-350!!@# these are goddamn scrollers, wobblers, lenzes and some other ugly shit.
i think most coders here could do it better :) and why the "anti 3D" attitude? if you think using the 3D acceleration possibilities of your display adapter limits to 3D flyby's you're obviously wrong. but you know that now dont you? i guess your 2d effects could have ran faster if you did them in hardware :)
anyhow cut the attitude, it makes me puke knowing that most of us 'll beat your ass anytime :) - isokadded on the 2002-04-21 11:35:06

- you were literally referring to quake:
"Quake is low-poly enough for a 486 to do the setup, I guess, so the CPU won't be the bottleneck."

- quake was software scali :) and a lot more than just tnl.
but hey.. lets stop this discussion and conclude that YOU MISTER, ARE A HOMO :) - isokadded on the 2002-04-20 01:24:21

- "But apparently you've never coded ASM"
you're absolutely right.
i think 7 years of experience with x86 assembly is far from enough to form a sane opinion about the subject.
and indeed
quake even ran (at a bit slow framerate) on my 486.
you're comparing cows with bulls. - isokadded on the 2002-04-19 20:35:06

- i damn well know asm, and unrolling loops is the last thing you'd do to optimize the speed =) smart thinking and correct placement and usage of instructions will do. if you won't buy it from me, ask somebody like jace :)
a lot of stuff you say? come on this isn't THAT much code.
i got a clue :) now you open your eyes and see how blocky the meshes actually are :)

- "Don't overestimate a PermediaII.
It's a REALLY slow card. Slower than a Voodoo 1. "
enough to draw a few polies (and we're talking a FEW here)
"And a 233 MHz PPC is not all that much when you have to do T&L and music synthesis, and all that in 64k too."
the whole 64k border has nothing to do with that, and the synthesis is NOT realtime.
"I don't think a 266 MHz PC would be able to drive the synth of fr-08 alone :) (I know it ran like crap on my PII 400 with a G450 :)
So any polycount at all would be welcome :) " refer to my last statement
"I say this intro remains technically stunning until someone proves otherwise with a better intro. " whatever
"By the way, the DivX were recorded from the following machine:
A1200 with Blizzard PPC 603e @ 200, 68040 @ 30 (yes overclocked:-) "
and one could see it didn't run exactly fast :)

- not even tutorial material :)
there are almost zero effects in this prod, the graphics are mediocre, the scrollers are non-smooth.. etc.
i ran this on my 380mhz thingie.. i guess that's overkill for the things i've seen. this can be done on a goddamn 386 :)
i don't like the "bragging" in the first scrollers btw. it's standard 'we cant live up' talk (i also constantly hear such things from certain dutch amigasceners who have no talents at all ;)..
so i'd say drop the "blabla oldskool" attitude when you're not oldskool.. either switch to harwdare rendering or get hang of optimizing. oh and next time some effects please ;)

- not that it makes this less cool.. but i feel a bit twisted about the "technically stunning" thing..
note that this runs on a 233mhz ppc with a permediaII (correct me if i'm wrong.. or maybe this wasn't used). but considering the polycount i dont think an intro like this is impossible on for example a 266mhz pc.
oh excuse me :) - isokadded on the 2002-04-18 21:53:58
