• Yes, it's in a level 3 interrupt. I currently do not, but once tried to enforce the correct state by writing $0f00 to POTGO, as dissident suggested, to no avail. I thought spkr's issue might be related to the menu being trackloaded before the system initializes DOS library, as productions later started from DOS doesn't have a RMB problem.

• Thanks Stingray for taking the time! But that doesn't fix it for spkr... we just tried. To my understanding this can't fix it, as #10 and #2 are equivalent here, as only the lower 3 bits are used for the bit index. Also it wouldn't explain why it works elsewhere, and many times before...

• It would've been a whopping two to three years ahead of its time in 1989. :-) Other sources claims it's from end of 1992, and this is exactly how it looks. A bit weak on transitions (it's always freeze+fadeout), but overall quite enjoyable, actually!
