I thought it goes without saying that if you don't care for <foo>, don't watch the <foo> compo, but here we are.
Well the Assembly orgas thought this compo was important enough to cut 1k intros and for this prod to get 96 euros, also we get glops for commenting, that's reason enough! - sucksadded on the 2026-08-13 20:26:18

- demo MacOSX Intel I Draw a Line Here
- I was going to go on some Apple-tree-yard/conformity gate type copium and hope based on the name alone that the AI use was all a lie and it'll all get revealed that that "line" was to not use ai, but even assuming all of that is true, the demo just sucks anyway, nothing that original, only altered images of "classical" works like some late stage Jeff Koons slop. I've seen so many cool things done with pure lines like in oscilloscope demos or certain geometry dash levels and despite having none of those limitations, there's nothing interesting or too creative. In any other PC compo this'd get bottom half and swiftly forgotten about, no one caring too much about it, but this is the AI coding compo, this gets 2nd place, this deserves 256 euros.

So not only AI, but nazi AI? nice. Very nice.
Those two are the same thing, something about poisoning poor black communities air and water supplies to build the data centers really gives it that quality. - sucksadded on the 2026-08-09 23:03:15

- demo MS-Dos Television by orange
- Okay the soundtrack is VERY Earthbound, imagine getting asked for your name and you input Der Piipo. Okay for starters I think this is the only prod that can actually justify using fakemode not even for the extra colors, just for the bars look, which is very TELEVISION. The first tunnel is insanely cool, the second tunnel was pretty much what Solstice did but less cool, for starters the black bars. Yeah I'm starting to get annoyed by all these Orange prods having black bars on the top and bottom, I want my full screen, not this windowboxed nonsense. Overall, still a really good demo! Der Piipo did fantastic on those drawings of old men, it might not even be no-copy like last time! Dune's music is great, Zeb's picture is alright, a very mediocre sendoff, and I have no idea what Barti is doing here, or even what he did. It's kinda sad that this demo is unfinished as Orange had to shove a bunch of it into X14 as there was a five alarm fire called Halcyon made a somewhat decent looking demo, which was absolutely unacceptable according to Hoplite!
I guess compared to Solstice the music is really weird, and I do like that a lot, trackers are a lot less limited than these DAWheads would like you to think!! So it's nice to see experimental like that. Solstice would have definitely been improved with some nice plasma, it's tight enough that I don't know where you'd fit it, maybe as a bump map for the bump rock? Although one thing I realize now is the Fakemode at the end just sucks looking at a video capture that smooths it together, it screams "Oh look we have infinite colors, time to do something boring" instead of getting demoeffects that should not be possible yet. X14 managed to keep it in order, and the beginning of this demo did so too, but man that effect just doesn't do it to me, I don't care if Valhalla was 5 months late, but they really do know how to make good use of a fakemode! - rulezadded on the 2026-07-21 10:47:06
- demo MS-Dos/gus x14 by orange
- The intro is so good, it's like Dope's ominous intro but better, obviously executed better than Solstice's clunky prerendered text on a black background, though the music in Solstice flows better with the "key" changing between patterns and it more smoothly leading up with the more ambient and deeper instruments coming in before hitting you with the proper opening, Dope had the courtesy of fading out the music before starting again, which I think worked very well for the demo, but in this demo after all of this build up, has these synths come out of nowhere and it's a bit jarring. I think it might also depend on the mixing because some video captures are completely fine and it actually somewhat works, while when I went the demo on DOSBox-X or listen to the soundtrack on OpenMPT it sounds sounds weird.
As for the Fakemode color, they truly need some sort of blurring, if you watch a clean run-through it just hurts your eyes. I'm a bit skeptical that the intro needed Fakemode, I know it's just to blend with the next effect seamlessly and that does look good. I think it might have been more cool to not give away the effect immediately, have hoplite's and dune's credits come in all normal, and then have der piipo be all fakemoded and transition to that. Overall I think Solstice does Fakemode better than X14, as the colors are brighter and more vivid so less straining on the eyes, and also there aren't these annoying black bars on the bottom/top of the screen, wait canonically does this mean this demo is in 16:9?? I like the 262144 colors text, reminds me of "THIS IS UNREAL" "7800 PHONG polys", and I think they're done nice.
Clock Tower by Der Piipo is utilized well, the tunnel I feel pretty ehh towards, especially when I think of Solstice's, but the Hornet commentary gives props for it apparently still running well on potatos, so that's in a way impressive, but I thought the whole point of the scene is to do that and then add more ontop to take advantage of the extra computing power? The feedback red gygas portal effect IS SOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL OMG, WHY DIDN'T MORE DEMOS DO THIS????

Is this a jab towards Jmagic of Complex? :)
There's no mention of Valhalla, which makes sense as by this point in time they've done pretty much nothing, though I can feel some inspiration that Valhalla must've gotten from these demos to their future ones, Solstice would not have been made without this paving the way, that's for sure. Honestly I kinda want to know what's Valhalla's deal with Orange, as the only mentions of them are by Optix in the Soft Project where he apologizes to and Orange member who never contributed to their demos according to demozoo, and H0l writing a short snippet about them in a magazine, so sad we'll never know what Sandman's and Big Jim's thoughts of Hoplite, Dune, and the guy who made Jmagician. - rulezadded on the 2026-07-17 12:00:05

- Me: "Hmm so if Project XYZ used DP's graphic's entry from the same party, and same with X14, does that mean Jmagician-"
After seeing how much Valhalla made fun of Jmagic, it's actually really weird seeing like a real demogroup do it. The guy at the end is nice, and all of the foreshadowing these demos have been doing for Television makes me excited to watch it, even though I know that it's unfinished and thus placed 7th. - rulezadded on the 2026-07-16 12:32:25
