Surprisingly high amount of content in just 3.5K.

Very creative, but it's sneaky how they managed to fit all the "graphics" (hint: look at the requirements in the info file)

Webdings font tro. The cheapest trick of 'em all to get some 'graphical content' in a low-filesize-situation. =)
(just look at all the 256b.htm compo entries)

hmmm... not bad, not bad. but it's a pity that gfx, text and sound have almost no connection. they show an ambulance, and the text says "32% of all americans change their underwear every 3rd day". pardon?

perhaps cheap, but nice and funny... deserved its place...

that was quite funny at the party place with some booze. I doubt it would be as funny, sitting at home infront of yer PC with the knowledge that you are a Computer nerd. Still thumbs up! =)

jute idee das mit dem font ;)

This was a good idea and the result is not bad but using an external data (here the font) shouldn't be allowed in a 4Kb competiton. Well, I mean it should count in the size, so that wouldn't fit in 4Kb and the entry should have been disqualified. Next time I'll do a 4Kb, I'll make a .3DS loader, require 3D studios to be installed and play the examples. Stupid you'll say... Well this is just an example to illustrate how stupid it is to allow such things to happen.

Haha, clever. Quite well carried out too, though the factbox had too bright colours. Also could have done without music.

gedeon: wrong. 4ks have ALWAYS used the external sources they had as cleverly as possible. all dos 4ks i know use the video bios (32k-64k) to set a video mode for example, and many use the bios font for text output. and those which required VESA practically never ran without UNIVBE, which was another hundred kb of code externally linked to.

on windows 4ks, this is even more the case - you won't manage to even change the video mode and get some graphics output without at least using user32.dll (516.5k on my system) and kernel32.dll (908.5k on my system), for example. directdraw 4ks need ddraw.dll (464k here), opengl 4ks need atleast opengl32.dll (670k on my system with ati radeon 8500) plus a driver (4mb here), and most need glu32.dll too (114k).

directsound 4ks need dsound.dll (528,5k), waveout/midi sound 4ks need winmm.dll (167,5k) and mmsystem.dll (67k), and midi 4ks also need a general midi patch set (normally around 2mb).

given those figures, i don't think that using the wingdings/webdings fonts (79 and 116k respectively, and shipped with EVERY windows release since win95 osr2) is much of a feat. as long as what you do runs on the majority of installed systems, it's absolutely ok with me.

the only problem i have is with 4ks that require specific versions of those dlls because they use hardcoded addresses or import by number - this is really cheating, because they only run on a very very narrow set of systems. as long as what you do works about everywhere (except some minimum specs and compatibility problems), it's okay with me.

about the intro itself: not technically impressive, but fun :)

jazzman: the text actually IS connected to the rest of the intro - just find out what "faktoid" means (a CNN invention, btw)

And yes, ryg is right: WebDings is available on practically all Windows installations except the original Win95 and older NT versions. But most demos do not run there anyway, so one can consider WebDings as a standard component for the windows installations used.

(next time, I´ll use MARLETT!)

Not impressive, but funny and original :)

factoid - unproven or untrue piece of information that is presented as fact and is widely believed

i still don't see the connection to the pictures though... :)

excellent :)

finally a kewl way to use the web/wingdings fonts :)
you should have pushed the concept even further and made the music/cacophony using with windows sounds instead of those awfull sounding hardcoded drums :)

very creative and stylish 4k!
a good idea doesn't need 3d to rule...

ps: T$ (& ryg)...man hätte noch ein paar bytes sparen können - als .com sind es 3.534b (mit upec+apack, ohne den pe-header zu vergewaltigen ;)

Fun and good idea, but a little slow..

Well, there are actually two meanings of the name of the intro. The intended one is:
"factoid: a brief (usually one sentence and usually trivial) news item"

ryg: Using external .dll (or code in general) doesn't bother me at all (as long as it is standard on most system like you said). Using external data is something else. The wingdings/webdings shouldn't even be installed by default on the system.

Anyway, I must admit (just checked) nothing in the rules prevented this. But I feel the rules should be precise enough on what people can use and cannot use. Only then would it be a fair competition because, with the idea of "use anything that is installed by default under Windows", there are many more cheap tricks you could make. I just thought of many that I won't disclose in case I use them in a 4Kb of my own ;-)

I didn't like concept of this demo, the 'faktoids' weren't interesting, and I'm against 4K'ers that use external data.

I've seen better things done by T$ yet. The idea of using a standard font for GFX is really neat :) The jokes are a bit to low... otherwise nice!
