lidar scans
rulez added on the 2022-08-28 21:55:03 by NR4 NR4
I think my favorite part of this prod is that someone is credited for "jokes" in case you want to know who to blame when you don't find it funny.

The LIDAR scan stuff isn't fully original, but conceptually at least in context it seems to work - the problem is that on this machine at least it fluctuates between silky smooth 60fps and absolute horrendous 1-2fps, and I can't seem to tell WHY, because not a whole lot happens that would warrant the latter.

Other than that it's kinda cute, obviously very dated, but proudly so, so I guess that at least means bonus points for being self-aware?

Very creative approach to making a demo, cool idea and good execution (with lots of easter eggs). Great comeback after so many years, congratulations!

Internet folk won't understand it so easily as perhaps us seeing the party place being recorded in a creative way by people we share a lot of local demo scene history together. But who cares, this is genuine stuff and thank you Miklesh for spending time to get this done!

comeback thumbs :) pretty enjoyable, apart from horrible framerate flucituatuions (point clouds loading/caching?)

Great comeback. Hopefully, I don't follow scene prods so rigorously to know the idea isn't original. Ignorance is bliss, because I rather feel like I like it :)

Also, FWIW even tho app is Intel, it work flawlessly through Rosetta on Apple Silicon.

Garrgaj, if by 'joke' you mean 'sed rector' screenshot, then it was sort of famous infamous moment in history of polish demoscene.
nice comeback & great demo overall.

i liked the pixelly point clouds (e.g. argasek drinking) but the LIDAR data with those larger boxy particles with edge detection effect on top however is rather ugly as hell :D
Puzzled me at first being almost 1GB but seeing later it's lidar data, I understand it. Ran pretty smoothly here and I enjoyed it.

And that's called a comeback after years! When is production on the A500? :P

Thank you for all the warm words.

Note that I wrote this demo on macOS, and most of you probably watched it on Windows. I did builds for Windows and Linux, but the Linux version was hardly tested at all, and the Windows version was tested extensively, but only by my colleagues in the group. I know there are glitches under Windows, but without direct access to Windows, I had a hard time removing it. Interestingly, the slowdowns are usually not due to point-cloud rendering, but rather slow particles system that I used. Some built-in GPUs also have problems with shader switching in this demo. There are also occasional cuts when reparenting new points-clouds to render (these point-clouds have millions of points!). Remember that this demo was written in Python, and the supporting Panda3D engine, although written in C++, still uses the CPU rather than the GPU. Unfortunately, the truth is that in 27 years I haven't written demos, so practically in the last year I had to learn everything from scratch.

Interestingly, it was written on macOS with M1, although due to problems with shader support, I had to work on Intel emulation.

When is production on the A500?

The A500 is a (beautiful but) finished story for me. I have no equipment, I hardly remember anything anymore. Really, I probably don't have time to learn it again. It's no coincidence that I used Python now because I know it and use it regularly at work. Recalling (and in fact learning from scratch) 68K assembler would probably exceed my time capabilities.

It runs incredibly smoothly on my old laptop with gforce610M and intel i7-3520M. Great work.

So... Nice to see you back, Dam(n)Age(d) dudes! It was VERY pleasant to see your production after these 27x12 months ;).

Nice demo, slightly blurred and sometimes, unfortunately, difficult to get "what the heck is here, what is written there?"
Great music! Really good job.
Did not get the WC part, thou =S.
Fortunately(!), I have not noticed that disgusting sed rector stuff.
Hope the cider was fresh and tasty =).

@Miklesz:
No A500 production?
Hahaha. Maaan, I bet you were probably sayng the same in 2021 about a new Damage demo. So... =) Hahaha.

BTW. Do you still have photos from the old copy-parties from the 90s? Do you have them scanned? If so, is it possible to share them via some FTP temporary link (my email is in my profile).

And last, but not least : Once scenner, always scenner!
