- 700MB download, because the whole demo is in there TWICE (good lord), not to mention each instance includes the music twice (so a total of 4 mp3s), and a bunch of 4k normal maps stored as HDR(?!?!)
- starts by trying to INSTALL a webserver, but provides no configuration to actually run the bloody thing
- 4k textures (good) with awful UV maps / texel density that ends up looking lowres (very bad); at least bake some lightmaps as a second UV set or get some SSAO up in the place.
- Impact
- initially a promising interpolation of the Das Boot theme that after the first minute or so sadly ends up staying on the general MIDI sound quality and completely ignores the "dramatic" action that's on screen
- no attention to detail - smokestack fumes underwater, console screen smoothscrolls text, you can see the edge of the water plane
- completely misplaced pacing where the dramatic peak action happens at around the 3 minute mark, and then the prod just dispassionately waffles around for 2 more minutes.

i'm sure the response will be "but it's just for fun / you shouldnt take it seriously" but i don't buy that excuse.

Surely one of the best färjan I've seen. The Das Boot aesthetic was well done and came through in the first seconds. The blend between färjan and Das Boot theme songs was uncannily fluent and the conflict between it's dark, claustrophobic and depressing atmosphere with färjan-silliness was a stroke of genius. I now need to watch the 4.5 hour cut of the movie again, thanks.

As a self proclaimed färjan meme expert I would argue that it's likely you missing the details and not that the production would actually lack the attention to details. :)

The smokestack was a clear nudge to the earlier färjan productions that behave in same physically unrealistic manner. The models and textures had an impressive amount of somewhat obscure and not at all underlined details pointing to stuff in "färjanverse" and the actual ferry company.

As for other comments: yes, maybe the release could be fixed to take less disk space. I also agree that it was in some parts slightly longer than I would have liked it to be.

Overall this demo in all its details is quite a masterpiece in parody/satire category of demoscene demos. Great job Basscadet (and also lovely to notice that uncle-x, clearly a secret admirer of färjan saga, has apparently contributed to nearly all färjan cables.gl demos ever released)!

What did I do this time? I admit nothing.

Also thumbs up. This big a filesize can only mean that the demo is awesome and full of professional level content.

Der Leitende approves despite the ungodly squander of diskspace.

Oops, double the amount of files in the zip was a screwup that is fixed now. Thanks for notifying that.

Well, if you know how to package an HTML demo so that it would work on a PC, I'd be glad if you could help. As a newcomer, I'm open to a little assistance. Mind you, I didn't have a PC with me at the partyplace at all.

Regarding production value, have you ever seen Färjan demos? Yes, it should have been a lot better but I ran out of time. The other option could have been to not release it for an entire year.

Are you always this friendly to new people making demos? Do you ever wonder why demomaking is a disappearing art form?

Yeah, the pacing might not be perfect, but I like what i see. Very atmospheric.

Technical flaws are flaws, and albeit understandable in a world of deadlines, should probably be patched out of a post-party release. Aesthetic preferences are subjective, and this demo certainly has its share of aesthetic choices that are appealing or make sense only in a very specific context.

However, going on about "no attention to detail" here only betrays a complete lack of understanding of that context. I like the term "Färjanverse" that Waffle just coined, and in the Färjanverse, things like the Sun casting a shadow have always been very much par for the course.

Good point on "it's just for fun" not being much of a justification for anything, though, since it's a pretty big gamble to make and release a demo and expect any part of it to be fun.

great soundtrack remix and idea!

i fear my opinion might be controversial but i'll say it anyways because it must be said: i strongly believe this demo strongly supports the thesis that technology behind cables.gl might be superior to the one available under farjanmaker, and that that aspect alone has truly unlocked other cinematic and aesthetic potential that allows demo creators to explore the farjanverse in ways that we never dreamed possible. i know it's not very accepted within the demoscene culture to use 3rd party engines to create your demos but when you see results like this and "the destroyer" by mfx i can only strongly advocate that it is indeed worth the anger triggering of the demoscene purists and should definitely be more explored in the future. i'm left curious wondering what other popular engines such as notch or unreal engine could bring to the table or even using superior hardware platform such as the Amiga AGA.

on a lighter note: demo could use some polishing on the visuals here and there (some textures are ugly, rendering a bit basic on some angles, explosion effect underwhelming) but was clearly rush made and has probably more time invested in it then several other farjan prods combined.

as for packaging html demos: best practice would be to include a note on how to run the most basic http servers ('python -m http.server' with python, 'npm install -g http-server' and then just calling http-server if there is node installed on the machine) or the argument to launch your browser allowing local file access (chrome.exe --allow-file-access-from-files). i also typically put the demo available online on a server of my own and give the url to the organizer to run from there if the are too hardcore stressed to not be able to launch a local http server (you never know, they might run into port 8080 already being in use by something else and become a headless chicken not knowing how to run it on another port). but for long term archive sake the text note explaining how to run it and what browser versions it was tested on is much more reliable.

Are you new though? I've known you in the scene for ~10-15 years, you have credits going back even longer, and more importantly you've been in the Meteoriks jury judging other people's work on the merits of visual quality, direction, etc... Surely you should be able to tolerate some heat just on the basis of that - walk the walk, and stuff.

Congrats on making a demo, but i think you should be honest there and not cover yourself under the "Newcomer" label (iirc you already held "demomaking with cables" seminars before?) - thats both unfair to actual newcomers and people voicing legit points as a critique :)

As for packaging cables demos - the WebDemoExe method that is linked in the cables documentation page that gargaj posted is the current "state of the art" thing to do. No windows machine needed, just follow the described steps and put your stuff in the folders. Very newcomer friendly. ;)

it does not look bad but it is quite boring. feels more like a flyby than actual story telling.
1.) make färjan demo
2.) collect gargaj rtfm comment
3.) play defensive newbie card
4.) ????
5.) profit

hey but you made a demo, I respect it ;)

who's being rude tho?

Gargaj gave very quantitative and useful feedback. Also this entire site is built around feedback on people's work. I'd assume being here implies being able to handle it, even if it's not a thumb up.

But we can also all go ahead and not comment honest feedback if it's negative. I don't really think that's encouraging to get zero comments on a prod and not know why people don't like it (or if they even watched it), esp. for newcomers.

NR4: gargaj, darya and you.

basscadet clearly knows the faults in the demo, it's clearly a fast demo, it's a farjan demo ffs. a lengthy list of all it's faults without any attempt to emphatise why they are there, on a clearly fast rushed joke prod is just entiltled idiocy imho.

sure it's constructive criticism in it's core, it's also exrtremely rude, arrogant and off-putting. especially for newcomers to read, which i assume was the point basscadet was trying to make, she is clearly not a newcomer in the demoscene but still learning to code demos in cables.

i'm not advocating we should only post pats in the back, just maybe don't act like an arrogant asshole when pointing out flaws in things? maybe try to see where it's coming from as a starting point instead of a footnote on the sarcastic inflamatory closing remark? i mean negative criticism has been one of the major reasons why some active sceners stopped using pouet in the past, and the fact that the admin leads by example certainly does not do it any favors in the present. meanwhile we have threads wondering why pouet has less comments and activity. i'm sure gargaj has thought about these things quite a bit in the past. why comment like this? good natured wanting to harden basscadet's demomaking shell? doubt basscadet needs any of that.

Sorry that my comment sounded rude. What I meant by it is:

* Quantitative comments from achieved sceners are really a big opportunity to learn imo.
* It's allowed to have it your way, even if the above happens, but I dislike the idea of justifying yourself with being new; that's a way of acknowledging that the feedback is correct, but you're not willing to learn from it.
* I still like and respect the fact that you wrote a demo. It's even one of the best Färjan demos I know of.

I realize that commenting a meme prod with a meme was maybe not the right choice here, even tho it sounded funny at first.

yes, of all the farjans so far, this one is probably the least worst!

Sadly that requires a Windows computer to run. I only had a Macbook with me at the party.

I have been active in the demoscene, yes, doing soundtracks for demos and wrote some oldschool demos by myself. This is my second newschool demo I have done by myself. When I did my first one you came over the line fuming even to the party orgas first. The tone was way beyond constructive feedback and more like do not ever publish stuff like this again. Hadn't I already had experience from demoscene I would certainly not published another demo at all. After all, that party only required video recordings, not executables so all the time went trying to record it.

I planned this demo specifically for Jumalauta party in order to not get any kind of heat of how bad it would be as I don't have much of experience with the engine and packaging the stuff. I'm well aware of the shortcomings of the prod and was embarrassed already publishing it. Still it won. And I haven't seen you lash on the rest of the Färjans.

I got a lot of heat from him on my first newschool demo a few years before I did the seminar. After that I didn't want to publish anything for a long while and didn't even plan the seminar but by surprise had to organize it. Das Färjan is still the second newschool demo I have published so far all by myself. Before that I have mainly done music, 3D objects and written tools and one synth. But no visual code at all.

All right. At first I assumed it was the tool that required Visual Studio. I'll try this the next time since I only have a Macbook as a portable option.

best farjan by far, even ignoring it's a fast demo, the direction and thought behind it is good. it's one of the few times i've laughed (the eurorack control panels taking the piss out of movies using synth gear for random-scifi-tech) and then felt incredibly guilty given the Estonia reference with the car deck door flooding. this is proper dark humour and i want more basscadet demos.

im not sure what the obsession with farjan is about but thats not the only thing in the world so im probably the wisest of all greeks. I have to agree this is the best färjan-themed item i have seen so far and even without it feels like a retro-pc game intro which could even go today on steam. We certainly ilke it . Cinematic directed demos ftw !!!

Fun prod gonna fun, I guess. It's hard to know how to judge such a work if everything that's weird can be defended with “but it's supposed to be bad, that's the genre” :-) But I'll note that everything seems strangely reflective in the Färjanverse.

Nice, but would have benefited a lot from being shorter, even if it meant that one would show certain scenes only once (if you didn't want to make more aggressive cuts).
