Games that beat the shit of of recent demos

category: general [glöplog]
Unfortunately it seems that games have become way more impressive than demos during the last few years. A am not an avid gamer, but I still like to look at some eyecandy.

Which recent games have the highest "demo value"?

One example is Alan Wake - of course done by some ex sceners!

no wonder considering that demos are usually made by 2-6 guys in a few months and games take 30-200 people and several years to complete..

btw. the in-house tools remedy uses for making the landscapes and stuff for alan wake are insane.. seriously insane.

Yes, games are lightyears ahead of the demo scene as far as being technically and visually impressive. But to be fair, software houses do have huge teams, lots of top spec technology and wage packets to motivate their staff.

Although that's still no reason for sceners to keep releasing Tron demos, oldskool cracktros and dot effects. They could at least try to aim a little higher.

Games that most impressed me are Hitman Blood Money for being so beautiful, Call of Duty 2 for realism and the water effects in Just Cause are mind blowing!
Go Shane! Go! Show us the way!

Alan Wake looks fucking amazing and sounds like my sort of game. But there's no way I'm installing Vista just to play it. It probably wouldn't run anyway due to some weird Vista bug.

I just looked at Project Offset and it looks stunning!!

No shit sherlock? Did you figure that out all by yourself? You suddenly realised that the videogames industry had become a serious business with a lot of money in the pipe? (more than the movie industry)

Most big games have insane budgets with dozens of programmers for 2 or 3 years nowadays.

Sealthz: there is no such thing as ex-sceners.

[My list]
The Legend Of Zelda - The Twilight Princess.

i think all games beat demos as you can play games but you can only watch demos :(

No, you can also create them.
Also, there are many games you can not really play ;)

Well, of course I understand the manpower issue. But it also seems that demos are lagging somewhat behind in adopting new hardware. it seems almost all demos work perfectly on my 3 year old set up. In the past years actually demos drove me to buy a new machine. Looks like it has to be a game now!

That's because half of the sceners are poor bastards and come whining everytime a demo doesn't run on their >5yo config.

demos arent made to be 100% impressive, techwise, most people just do demos, because they are cool to make, and fun to watch.

Since 1998 I was looking at games that were supposed to be more impressive than anything. I was looking at FPS as they were technical demos. But there is a diferrence between demoscene and games, so I don't care much. In fact, demos lately gave me strangely beatifull feelings especially after having a stupid discussion with someone in the army about "why doing demos". It didn't end up well but after the discussion, thinking it alone I realized the magic of demos. "Demo is art". It's something that you do and it's useless. You code demos for the demos themselves and not so that they will be usefull apps or something (That's what my friend couldn't understadn). And Ilike this. Useless. Unlike "real life' which is a meaning wannabe.

But I got out of subject and I'd say that Alan Wake is good news for me because it's from the guys behind Max Payne. I hope it's not just the graphics but the atmoshpere/scenario too like in Max Payne. If I was otaku I would be dressed like Payne.

The only real solution is to make the kind of demos you want to watch yourself.

The Darkness - made by Starbreeze Studios (founded by former Triton members)

Alex Evans (=Statix) is working on the most impressive, most funniest and most innovative PS3 game Little Big Planet

Byterapers, ermm Bugbear recently released Flatout 2

As far as I know Rune Vendler (aka Echo/Fudge) is working on Fable 2

War Front - made by Digital Reality (former Astroidea members)

Then we have 49Games, of course, who're the Farbrausch guys, including Mad/Bauknecht and Pet/Einklang.net. I'm still waiting for something else then some nice winter sport games from them. Something impressive as Debris :-). At least the menus of their games are a bit scenish :-). Ok, their games are off topic to this thread, as they don't look as good as Alan Wake, Crysis and most of the others mentioned here.

Recently I found "Zelda - Twilight Princess" very Traction-alike. Lots of glowing lines in the shadow world, as well as flowing black particles everywhere. Really nice and stylish.
